Argentina > Saudi Arabia
GO Yemen!
Whoa, Argentina with Messi 1, Saudi Arabia 2. People have died for less.
Ouch, that's really rubbing it in.
... They still must face Poland on Saturday and then take on Mexico next Tuesday in Group C. Both are probably still favorites against Saudi Arabia - despite the upset....
I normally wouldn't care about Poland, but they've provided heroic support for Ukraine and its refugees. GO Poland and Mexico > Saudi Arabia and Argentina, be the two to advance.
Public holiday? And here in US the guberment will not even grant the monday after superbowl as a national holiday!
Yeah...What the heck?!?!?!?!

How many times do teams get to lose or tie before they're booted?

4 teams in each of 8 groups. They all play each other, 3 games, and the 2 teams from each group with the best scores advance to the knockout rounds. Scoring:
Win - 3 points
Tie - 1 point
Then, if needed, the tiebreaker is head-to-head. The next tiebreaker is Fair play points based on fewest yellow and red cards in total group play (-1 for a yellow, -5 for a red).
Usually, a team needs at least 4 points to advance.

My bad.
(In ties between the second and third places at the group stage), the ranking among these teams is determined as follows:

Greatest combined goal difference in all group matches
Greatest combined number of goals scored in all group matches
If more than one team remain level after applying the above criteria, their ranking will be determined as follows:
Greatest number of points in head-to-head matches among those teams
Greatest goal difference in head-to-head matches among those teams
Greatest number of goals scored in head-to-head matches among those teams
Fair play points, defined by the number of yellow and red cards received in the group stage:
Yellow card: minus 1 point
Indirect red card (as a result of a second yellow card): minus 3 points
Direct red card: minus 4 points
Yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points
If any of the teams above remain level after applying the above criteria, their ranking will be determined by the drawing of lots
In 2018 only one group went to tiebreaker - 4 points each - and it was settled on Fair play points: Japan −4, Senegal −6. Japan advanced over those dirty ;) Senegalese.

Nil-nil, an embarrassment for England. England 4 points, USA 2. USA will have to beat Iran on Tuesday. England needs to beat or tie Wales on Tuesday.

So how does a scoreless tie give England 4 and US 2? Did they go through that checklist above?

The tiebreaker doesn't come into play until all 3 games have been played.
England and US each got 1 point from the tie.
England beat Iran for 3 points, 4 total.
US tied Wales for 1 point, 2 total.
England plays Wales in its group finale. If it loses, unlikely, they will be tied with 4 points.
Iran (3 points) beat Wales (1 point after tying US).
If US beats Iran it advances with 5 points.
If Iran wins or ties it advances.
Theoretically, England, Iran and Wales could all finish with 4 points, thus sparking a complex tiebreaker.

Sorry - I thought the 4-2 score was a result of the scoreless tie. (fish slap)

There are a lot of people around here who are taking the games seriously. In various ethnic neighborhoods there are bars representing different countries, so if you want to root for England, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, yada you can probably find a place with a crowd and a big TV. Also the Rady Shell was temporarily re-purposed as a mini-stadium holding about 5K people who, unlike in Qatar have ample access to beer.

Some serious watching here.

The U.S. men’s national team shattered a viewership record on Friday with its draw against England at the World Cup.

The match in Qatar, which finished 0-0 in the second of their three group stage matches, drew 15,377,000 English-language viewers in the United States, Fox announced on Saturday night. It peaked at more than 19.6 million, too.

That’s up about six percent from the last record of 14.51 million during Italy and Brazil’s championship match in the World Cup in 1994....

I don't think expectations were high.
