Texas state Rep. Julie Johnson (no relation to LBJ that I can find), the early front-runner in the race for a U.S. House seat left open by departing Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), is on track to become the first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from the Lone Star State.
She’d also be the first elected from the entire American South, where the bulk of anti-LGBTQ legislation was passed this year.
Johnson’s campaign announcement video, released last month, highlighted the 57-year-old’s experience as an attorney, an openly gay Texan and a state lawmaker who unseated former Republican state Rep. Matt Rinaldi — now the leader of the state Republican Party — in 2018.
“I already know how to get the job done and win the toughest battles,” she said in announcing her candidacy for Texas’s 32nd Congressional District. She’s part of a crowded Democratic primary to succeed Allred, who in May launched a challenge to Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) reelection bid, giving up his solidly blue seat in the House.
Wouldn't Allred and Johnson both winning be amazing?
Johnson has made a name for herself in the state Legislature by collaborating and forming strong friendships with members on both sides of the aisle. She’s also been integral to defeating anti-LGBTQ legislation in Texas.
During her first year in office in 2019, Johnson joined four other openly gay women in the Texas House to form the state’s first LGBTQ caucus, now one of the nation’s largest. The same year, Johnson’s wife, Susan Moster, became the first same-sex spouse invited to join the Legislative Ladies Club, a social group made up of the husbands and wives of Texas House members.

Why are people like NYT doing serious commentary on Uncle Tim?
"Tim Scott Awaits His Moment. But Will It Come?
The South Carolina senator is gaining in early-voting states and has money, a positive message and a compelling story. Now he needs to take on the Republican front-runners"
Is there anybody in the literate world that thinks the RepuQ's that bashed Obama for 8+ years and elected Trump are really going to nominate a Black guy?

His campaign for the VP nomination could be significant in the general, and "heartbeat away from the presidency" has real meaning if Dolt .45 is the POTUS nominee.
Wimps. "Never Back Down" is an unofficial Fascist DerSantis campaign motto . Also, the law is working as the article describes. DerSantis and VP Q-tip are unpatriotic idiots.
I'm seeing fewer Fascist DerSantis ads, I think.
Just today I started seeing Joltin' Joe ads.
Makes me glad I don't watch TV with commercials.
What's your setup
All premium streaming?
Right now Prime, Acorn and Great Performances. Apple comes free and Netflix at half price with my t-mobile service.
Come 9/2 I'm back to paying big bucks for youtubeTV and the unavoidable commercials during football.
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”
My t-mobile has free Netflix, but I don't think we get Apple. Maybe I better check.
So you don't get any live network programming?
I have an antenna in case of a hurricane, or a raid by the infamous pink pistol toting lesbian biker gang that bill O'Reilly warned about, but other than testing it, I haven't used it.
As for other network and cable shows, football and basketball seasons require something like YouTubeTV.
I haven't watched cable news in, I don't remember exactly, maybe 2 or 3 years.
I love the British and Irish cop shows.

Go with Sling.
Eamus Catuli~AC 000000000101010202020303010304 020405....Ahhhh, forget it, it's gonna be a while.
That doesn't seem to be a great solution for me. The streaming local channels aren't where I am, and I can get over-the-air channels (if any) without Sling. What's the advantage?

OK, but I still don't see it, at least for us. My DISH bill is $76/mo, that includes all local channels (wherever we happen to be), plus one "flex pack" and we get all the usual suspects for cable channels (TNT, USA, Lifetime, A&E, yada) As long as we're not parked under a big tree or in a bad rainstorm, we've had no complaints or problems. And, because of having the DISH service, I can get all the network-affiliated stations streaming through Roku. If I'm missing something, let me know, but what advantage would I get from cord cutting?
... In response to the Win It Back PAC ad campaign, Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign referred to the Club as "another swampy DC insider group using shady money to hurt America," in a statement to NBC News.
The Club isn't the only high-powered Republican group pledging to go against Trump in next year's GOP primary. Americans for Prosperity, one of the main groups in the conservative Koch networks, has also said it'll spend money against Trump in the primary.
The New York Times reported last week that the Koch network has already raised over $70 million to spend on the 2024 election cycle.
What?
Was this song written just for this event? If so, that's even more way stupider than opening with songs protesting war and hate because they only listened to the first 3 words.
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”
The song has been used extensively in campaigns for both political parties. It was used frequently during president George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. John Kerry also had it played at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. The song also played when Obama announced Joe Biden as his vice president in Springfield, Illinois in 2008. It was also featured after Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Denver on August 28, 2008 and has been used at campaign events in Obama's 2012 reelection campaign. "Only in America" has been used often in campaign events for Newt Gingrich in his bid to receive the 2012 Republican Presidential Nomination. Scott Walker (R-WI) also used the song after his first speech when he survived a gubernatorial recall on June 5, 2012. Mitt Romney also uses the song in many of his political rallies. When Ted Cruz dropped out of the 2016 primaries, he closed his announcement with this song. Towards the end of the 2016 election, Republican nominee Donald Trump used the song for various rallies.
