The plagues are: water turning to blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, the killing of firstborn children and Republicans.

Remember how wet it was just a few decades years months weeks ago? Yeah, neither do I.

Chicago roasting in record-setting heat that feels like 120 degrees

Chicago set a heat index record Thursday after “feels like” temperatures at an airport hit a blistering 120 degrees Fahrenheit, smashing the previous record set in July 1995 during a heat wave that killed more than 500 people in the city.

Heat index values measure what conditions feel like to the human body when humidity and air temperatures are combined. An intense heat wave across the Midwest and through the South sent heat index values skyrocketing well into the triple digits this week, as 98 million people remained under heat alerts Thursday.

Chicago’s previous heat index record of 118 F, set July 13, 1995, stood for nearly three decades. Just before 3 p.m. Thursday, however, a heat index of 120 F was recorded at O’Hare International Airport, becoming the city’s highest in recorded history....

Studies have shown climate change is making heat waves more likely to occur — and longer and more severe when they do.

It was a miserable couple of days, we're better today but the dome has just moved a little further south. Usually it's cooler by the lake but the wind was out of the west blowing any cooler air back out over the lake so not this time.

When you walked outside it felt like the air was sucked out of you, I could only walk the dog for about 30 minutes at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. He wasn't interested in running more than 50 feet.

We've got smoke again. Not much of an outdoor day, but better than feeling like 120F. It's pretty easy to understand how "nuclear winter" would work. It's supposed to be around 26C (80ishF) today, but the smoke cover cooled it down quite a bit. A little rain should clear it out this evening, though.

How do they know? So the last day of Summer was beautiful - mid 70's, sunny, and we took advantage of it with a good hike and some time in the sun. Then Fall fell with a vengeance. Sharp drop in temp, rain, and a stiff breeze dropping leaves off trees. Like flipping a switch.

We didn't get flushed as bad as LA, but we did get a fairly rare thunder storm with rain last night. Lightning with rolling thunder in dark over the ocean is pretty cool. Seems to be mostly over today, though. Tomorrow we're off to Palm Springs for Christmas - we're doing a desert holiday with a guided Jeep tour into the San Andreas fault, attempt at a good night sky in Coachella Valley Preserve, and then through the Anza Borrego on the way home. Rain would definitely affect the experience, but it looks like it's gonna be good.

SAN DIEGO — Big surf is headed to California — and also San Diego County — in the final days of 2023 as the King tides approach. Massive waves are expected to arrive as early as Thursday morning and last through Sunday.

What are King tides?
"A king tide is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides. Tides are long-period waves that roll around the planet as the ocean is "pulled" back and forth by the moon's and the sun's gravitational pull as these bodies interact with the Earth in their monthly and yearly orbits," according to the National Ocean Service.
...
Advisories
A high-surf and a coastal flood advisory will be in effect all weekend at San Diego County beaches, with large breaking waves of up to 12 feet, sets to 15 feet and some expected minor flooding, forecasters said Thursday.

Yeah, there were a couple of guys got tossed onto the rocks at La Jolla, but even that was just bruises. Had to pull them up off the rocks and then they walked away. Lifeguards were running the ski-do's out past the breakers and the pulled in a few, but nobody drowned or got seriously injured.

They had some top surfers on TV telling people that they shouldn't be out unless they were very experienced, but face it, there are a LOT of really good surfers around here. And apparently all of them went out.

If I was a surfer dude that would be too crowded for me.

Q: What do you call a surfer bro with a head injury?
A: A surfer bro.

Just How Wild Was Is This Week’s Weather? One Image Tells the Tale.

Image
FEMA’s national map showing hazards expected to start on Jan. 13, 2024, including variations of snow, wind, cold, rain and floods affecting most of the country.

:problem:

billy.pilgrim is on the edge of "Hazardous Cold 1/15 - 1/16".
GoCubsGo gets "High Winds 1/13, Hazardous Cold 1/13 - 1/16".
banni, Whack9 and I are in the dark purple bit of "Flooding Likely". This is different from the flooding we're still just recovering from.
O Really gets 60s and "Partly Cloudy"

We walked down to the beach to see the high king tide and looked for the clouds. Didn't see any yet. Maybe later. But it is chilly.
