2024 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

It's a big deal to take on an incumbent in the primaries. I can't remember it ever being successful.
Dead = Unsuccessful
Are you saying Lincoln had an unsuccessful 2nd term?
600K+ dead Americans and a legacy of whiny White supremacy lasting 158+ years arguably = an unsuccessful 1st term.

:wtf: :headscratch: :wtf: :headscratch: :wtf: :headscratch: The discussion is specific to primary challengers of incumbents - Unsuccessful since 1856, both parties. Wishful thinking about RFK doesn't change that.
We evidently use different definitions. In no way, not even slightly the slightest, do I see RFK's campaign as unsuccessful. It was cut short.

 Still forgetting my original point. In this conversation and the article I linked the ONLY definition of 'success' is a primary challenger of an incumbent becoming POTUS. Other definitions of 'success' are entirely different discussions.

Agreed. Assassination just wouldn't be something I would even consider as a definition of lack of success.

Very very modest gains 2016 to 2020. I'll bet they reverse in 2024 since P01135809's White supremacy has become so much more brazen.

9/15:
See Trump's gaffe while attacking Biden

At the Pray Vote Stand Summit in Washington DC, former President Donald Trump attacked President Joe Biden's mental competency and then claimed Biden was leading the US into World War II.
:laughing-rolling:

"This guy is 'too old' to run for President. More importantly he is not mentally fit. He's also corrupt, charged with 91 felonies in four indictments. He's a liar, cheat, unprincipled. A sex offender. Twice impeached loser. I'm sure I'm missing a few things."
-- Alexander Vindman, former U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and whistleblower whose testimony led to Trump's first impeachment

"Please tell me this is fake."
-- Ian Miles Cheong, conservative commentator
... An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll conducted among 1,165 adults from August 10-14 found that 77 percent of all Americans are concerned about Biden's age, while only 51 percent are concerned about Trump's age....
:headscratch: Maybe voters should be required to take competency tests, too.

We once did so. They were called literacy tests and were designed to point out and eliminate based on skin color.

An illiterate these days can be reasonably well informed depending on their TV, radio and computer habits. Otoh, incompetents are overwhelmingly Trumpettes and other RepuQs, as fairly applied standards would show.

As for requiring competency tests for POTUS and Congress, it's all :bs: and Nikki, etc know it. The qualifications are spelled out in the Constitution and we're not getting an amendment. Same with the term limits that RWers spend so much time screeching about.

Alabama Is Quickly Discovering the Dangers of Defying the Supreme Court

Comments:

Supreme Court Declines to Revisit Alabama Voting Map Dispute

The Supreme Court on Tuesday morning declined to reinstate a congressional map in Alabama drawn by Republican lawmakers that had only one majority-Black district, paving the way for a new map to be put in place before the 2024 election.

The order came in response to a request from Alabama that the justices freeze a lower-court ruling striking down its proposed map. A three-judge panel found that the state had brazenly flouted its directive to create a second majority-Black district or something “close to it.” ...

We may be doomed.

 Like cowardly idol, like cowardly acolytes.
'Donald Duck': Chris Christie slams Trump for skipping GOP debates
The former president skipped Wednesday's Republican debate for a second time, insisting that he's certain to win the party’s nomination.

... “Donald, I know you’re watching. ... You’re not here tonight — not because of polls and not because of your indictments — you’re not here because you’re afraid of being on this stage and defending your record.”

“You’re ducking these things,” Christie added. “And let me tell you what’s going to happen. [If] you keep doing that, no one up here is going to call you Donald Trump anymore, we’re going to call you Donald Duck.”
... Trump has insisted that he does not need to debate his Republican opponents because he’s certain he will win the party’s nomination.

A Yahoo News/YouGov poll last week found that he is the preferred candidate of 59% of Republicans nationwide. The next closest competitor is DeSantis at 13%, followed by Haley and Ramaswamy at 5% each.
Still a coward, regardless.
Winners and losers from the second Republican debate

... During a chaotic two-hour debate, they often tried to do it at once, talking over each other, the moderators, and sometimes themselves.

"Thank you for talking while I'm interrupting," Vivek Ramaswamy told Tim Scott snidely in what was a telling Freudian slip.
... Their contempt was a fitting end for a tumultuous two hours, as all of the candidates repeatedly ignored the pleas from moderators to respect speaking time limits, minimise interruptions, and respect the debate rules.

In the end, it may have been the ineffective moderators who viewers wanted off the island most.
Cut off the mikes, dummies. Faux is incompetent, as usual.
Gavin Newsom Exposes The Most 'Pathetic' Moment Of The Republican Debate
This proposal got the California governor's blood boiling.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate a “nothingburger.”

“Honestly, more disappointed in it than I was expecting,” Newsom told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow after the event.

But one moment seemed to get his blood boiling: When former Vice President Mike Pence said his solution to mass shootings would be expedited executions for the shooters.

“Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic,” Newsom said. “He’s been saying this now for months. I cringe every time I hear this.”

Newsom said most mass shooters expect to during the shooting.

“What a joke, that that somehow is a deterrent,” he said. “Number one killer of our kids is guns, and that was a solution tonight, that was a debate for the next president of the United States on how to deal with mass shootings? I don’t want to say disqualifying. But honestly, for a former vice president, pathetic.”
Ex-VP Q-tip has always been a pandering idiot.
Newsom has been outspoken on the need for stronger gun control and just signed a law in California that adds an 11 percent tax to the sale of guns and ammo in the state.

While the federal government also taxes guns and ammo, California is the first state to have its own tax.

Nikki Haley's Ramaswamy Zinger Praised As 'Most Relatable Thing' She's Ever Said
The former South Carolina governor was fed up with her debate rival — and social media users felt the same way.

Nikki Haley seems to find her GOP presidential rival Vivek Ramaswamy incredibly annoying, and some online commentators apparently couldn’t agree more.

″Honestly, every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber for what you say,” the former South Carolina governor snapped at her primary debate opponent on Wednesday night....
:---P This is why O Really calls her Nikki Heat. ;)

Otoh:
Nikki Haley has a glowing blurb on the back of Vivek Ramaswamy’s latest book:
“His combination of honesty, intellect, and foresight are exactly what we need to overcome our challenges in the years ahead.”

Murdoch's WSJ has a different, perhaps complimentary, take:
Wall Street Journal Rips GOP Candidates For 1 Major Debate Failure
It's the "elephant not in the room," said the newspaper's conservative editorial board.

Republican candidates at the second Donald Trump-less 2024 primary debate “largely left the front-runner” former president “off the hook,” the Wall Street Journal complained in a new editorial.

Their “main oversight continues to be that with rare exceptions they are giving Mr. Trump a pass,” wrote the newspaper’s conservative editorial board.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis did hit Trump “for not showing up to debate,” the board noted, while former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called out Trump for what he “didn’t do about China.”

And while the Journal acknowledged the candidates could be “wary of offending MAGA voters,” it explained how to challenge Trump’s record “without sounding like the left-wing scolds at CNN or MSNBC” — by referring to his poor election record and focusing on policy differences.

Trump is “the elephant not in the room, and it is no service to voters to ignore him until a week before the Iowa caucuses in January,” the board concluded....

Trump is not the "elephant not in the room." The elephant in the room is Trump's actions and resultant legal troubles. The best they can do is criticize him for not showing up at a pretend "debate" to put up with wannabes exchanging pre-prepared sound-byte zingers? And c'mon, Nikki Heat, you sound like a serious person, but the worst you have is what Trump didn't do with China? How about what he did do? Tariffs, taunts, and threats that set relations with the US's biggest financial holder back decades.

Trump has admitted (bragged about, actually) enough stuff to bash him for days without even getting into arcane "policy" issues. What's wrong with "the losing former President is facing serious legal peril in several criminal and civil lawsuits. He's entitled to his day in court, and legally is considered innocent until proven guilty. However, what he has done and admitted to makes him unfit for further office even in the absence of a conviction for crime." They also ought to point out that he's only 2 years less old than Biden and clearly has physical and mental concerns. They ought to criticize his behaviour in conducting his own defense - name-calling of judges, etc. in that if nothing else it's actions unbecoming of a national leader.

Not that I care if they step on their own collective dicks, but it seems somebody would run the numbers and realize that nobody but hard core MAGAs like Trump and there aren't enough of them to win a national election. He had a lot of cross-overs and Hillary haters in 2016, he lost in 2020 and hasn't made himself any additional supporters since then.

I'm glad we're old, and I really don't like the US very much.

O Really,

Further Clown Car #2 reporting:
GOP debate fact check: Separating fact from fiction on what candidates got right and wrong

... Tim Scott claim: Nikki Haley spent $50,000 on curtains as the UN ambassador

“As the UN ambassador, you literally put $50,000 on curtains.” - Scott

This is false, and Nikki Haley has a New York Times correction to prove it....

Mike Pence claim: Trump administration oversaw record-low unemployment for Blacks, Hispanics

"We saw literally the lowest unemployment ever recorded for Hispanic Americans, lowest unemployment ever recorded for African Americans." - Pence

... But this cherry-picked data ignores that these rates have fallen even lower under Trump's democratic successor....

Vivek Ramaswamy claim: Ukraine banned 11 opposition parties

“Just because Putin’s an evil dictator does not mean that Ukraine is good. This is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties.” - Ramaswamy

This happened, but Ramaswamy left out key details on why.

Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy announced in March 2022 that Ukraine suspended 11 political parties because of their ties to Russia, as reported by The Guardian. The announcement came one month after Russia launched its invasion of the country....

Chris Christie claim: Donald Trump added $7 trillion to our national debt

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie touted this stat in asserting a lack of fiscal restraint by Republicans, echoing a claim Nikki Haley made in the August Republican debate. Haley said the figure was $8 billion, which is a little closer.

Using Treasury Department data, the total public debt, which includes intragovernmental holdings and public debt, increased by approximately $7.8 trillion from the start of Trump’s presidency on Jan. 20, 2017, to when he left office on Jan. 19, 2021.
