Trump on Trial

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Pro-Trump conspiracy theorist lawyer Lin Wood is a witness in Georgia election case, prosecutors say

Lin Wood, a prolific conspiracy theorist who joined spurious efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, appears to be cooperating with prosecutors in Georgia as the state’s sprawling criminal case against Donald Trump and 18 others heads to at least two trials.

A special grand jury tasked with reviewing evidence in the case surrounding the former president recommended that Mr Wood face criminal charges connected to an alleged criminal scheme to subvert the outcome of Georgia’s election results, but Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ultimately declined to do so.

Mr Wood, instead, is among “witnesses for the State in the present case,” according to court filings.

While promoting a range of bogus conspiracy theories invoking debunked QAnon-adjacent myths and slogans, Mr Wood joined failed legal efforts in the aftermath of the 2020 election to reject results in key states that Mr Trump lost.

Following the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, as a joint session of Congress convened to certify Joe Biden’s victory, Mr Wood appeared to call for the assassination of then-Vice President Mike Pence on the social media platform Parler after he rejected Mr Trump’s pressure to reject the outcome: “Get the firing squads ready. Pence goes FIRST.” ...
I'm not positive that full immunity is worth it. After all, P01135809 is 77 and may very well die before he ever gets to prison. Of course, "Worm" Wood is 70, same-same. Maybe Wood can really nail the other 18, I hope.
The Trump-allied attorney retired from his law practice earlier this year to avoid disbarment amid an investigation and possible disciplinary action under the Georgia bar.

On his Telegram account, Mr Wood said there “NOT TRUTH” to accusations that he “flipped” against the former president.

“I have no idea why I am being asked to testify at the trial,” he added.

He said he has had “no discussions” with the district attorney’s office following his testimony to the special grand jury.
:headscratch:
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who is presiding over the racketeering case against Mr Trump and his co-defendants, also presided over civil contempt charges against Mr Wood in a series of recent hearings that resulted in thousands of dollars in fines.
Good.
Mr Wood, whose prolific posts on his Telegram account frequently invoke Christian prayer, was held in contempt of court for repeatedly denigrating his colleagues despite a gag order against him. A lawsuit from his former law partners accused him of “erratic, hostile, abusive, and threatening” behaviour.
Oh so very xtian.
On his Telegram account, Mr Wood claimed he was being prosecuted for his “efforts as a lawyer representing myself for TRUTH in the court of public opinion as is my duty”. In the post, he lashed out at the judge, Freemasons, and Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp....
Freemasons? I foresee an insanity defense.

Seems that any Wood claims without supporting documentation can easily be discredited by defense lawyers as the ravings of a lunatic. I hope Fani has thought this through.

Maybe Fani figures he's conviction-proof for the same reason, or maybe it's pity immunity.

Trump legal news brief: Rudy Giuliani trial to start Dec. 11 to decide how much he must pay 2 Georgia election workers
Yahoo News' succinct daily update on the criminal and civil cases against the 45th president of the United States.

Judge sets start date for Giuliani defamation damages trial

Key players: Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Judge Beryl Howell, Fulton County DA Fani Willis

* Howell, who found Giuliani liable for defaming Freeman and Moss after falsely spreading a conspiracy theory that they had tampered with voting machine results in 2020, set Dec. 11 as the start date of the trial that will determine the amount of damages the former New York mayor must pay the two women, ABC News reported.

* The trial will take three to five days to decide, Howell estimated.
Bleed him dry.
* Giuliani is already on the hook for more than $130,000 in legal fees racked up by Freeman and Moss.

* Giuliani’s legal bills continue to mount. On Tuesday, his former lawyers sued him for $1.4 million in unpaid legal bills.
:---P
Why it matters: The false claims that workers had tampered with the 2020 election results is just one of many findings noted in Willis’s indictments of Trump, Giuliani and 17 others charged in Georgia. Trump, the indictment notes, called Freeman a “professional vote scammer.”
Lock him up!
Giuliani calls Hutchison groping allegation ‘totally absurd’ ...
True or not, no rational person thinks it's ‘totally absurd’.
Peter Navarro: Trump pitched in $300,000 for legal defense

... While Navarro plans to appeal the contempt-of-Congress verdict, he has so far amassed legal bills exceeding $600,000.

Through a crowd-funding effort, Navarro has raised just over $620,000, but he told MSNBC that he expected to spend over $1 million defending himself.
 So much money supporting criminality. Sad.
... Why it matters: The courts have handed Trump and his associates a series of losses on the question of executive privilege, obliging former administration figures to testify. Navarro has portrayed himself as a victim of efforts by anti-Trump prosecutors to bankrupt him.

P01135809 should be scared. It begins, a surprise:
Trump co-defendant pleads guilty in Georgia election interference case

One of 18 co-defendants of former President Donald Trump has pleaded guilty to five charges in the Georgia election interference case.

Bail bondsman Scott Hall has struck a plea deal with prosecutors that requires him to testify against others.
:---P
The former Republican poll watcher is accused of trying to gain access to sensitive election equipment in Coffee County, Georgia.

The arrangement marks the first plea deal in the case.

During a hearing before Fulton Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee on Friday, Hall, 59, pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties.

As part of the deal, Hall will get five years probation. He will also have to pay a $5,000 (£4,000) fine, testify against other defendants in the case, complete 200 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to Georgia voters. He is also banned from future election administration-related activities.

Hall is accused of travelling to Coffee County in south-eastern Georgia to try to illegally breach voting equipment to look for evidence of a rigged election. His co-defendant and former Trump lawyer Sydney Powell is also accused of participating in the breach.
Some token prison time would have been nice. Hall's MAGAt criminality was significant. I hope the prosecutors get good value for the deal.

Less than one month:
... Prosecutors are readying for at least two trials with 18 defendants in the Georgia case, including one that is set to begin on 23 October with Ms Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, the alleged creator of a fake elector scheme.
The TRE45QN, etc trials newsfeed will be very busy through 2024. Good.

I don't believe it and let's face it, they've bloviated these type of things before.

This is a civil proceeding, but if they perjure themselves it opens them up to criminal charges.

He's really out of control. Does a judge have a way to shut him up in a civil trial?

It is simply impossible, no exaggeration, for Trump to testify without lying. He often lies when the truth would serve him better, and lies when the conflicting truth is in plain sight.

Yeah, he's not testifying.

Can the judge sanction him for his out of court outbursts and outright slander?

Fwiw, unlike Habbadabbadoo these are apparently not B-list lawyers:
Clifford S. Robert
Chris Kise

I'm comfortable in assuming that most of the stupidity is coming from the client rather than counsel. I wonder if they're taking yugely overvalued Trump properties as collateral on their fees? :lolno:

I hope they got a yuge retainer plus some solid collateral I can't imagine the Hell of having to defend trump. In addition to the day to day misery of having to deal with him, you'd be forever coated with his stank. Criminal defence lawyers don't usually get personally blemished by the evilness of their clients (who defended Dahmer?) But everything trump touches dies.

Might a contempt citation put P01135809 in jail sooner than anyone predicted? Fingers crossed. Or, would Judge Arthur Engoron (bio) stick to fines?

-0-? I see contempt enforced on TV shows more than irl, not counting journalists who refuse to reveal sources. Jail would be an effective form of ending the hateful spewing, though.
