I don't know who made up the "government shutdown" term or concept, but it's total bullshit. It's clearly not really a shutdown of the government, but simply a temporary closure of some departments and deferral of compensation for some government workers solely for the purpose of creating fear and inconvenience.

But the number one job of Congress is to run the government - in what other place could people just refuse to perform their primary job as a means of extorting others and do so without adverse consequences?

It's basically an illegal strike by those who think striking should result in termination or worse.

Omfg...

His tenure was defined by pushing far-right policy: proposals that Minnesota should chemically castrate sex offenders, impose strict voter ID laws, and outlaw abortion in all instances (as well as proposals that would also potentially outlaw certain forms of contraception and in vitro fertilization). He questioned evolution and was one of the loudest, most influential opponents of same-sex marriage. And despite two earlier DUI infractions, Emmer put forth bills to lessen penalties for drunk driving, which became fodder for opponents in later political campaigns.

Yeah, but, but they really didn't want to and if you consider the republicans who wanted to vote for it but didn't, you can clearly see that it was the Dems who didn't want it to pass.

  Then, Joe didn't really want to sign it. This is all a clear victory for SINO. Well played. :-||

Saw one House Dem saying that are no circumstances where he anticipates rescuing SINO. He will vote a 16th time for Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Good.

I think it's in everybody's interest to rescue McCarthy. Not that he's good, or trustworthy, or has many redeeming features, but he's way better than the other loons that have been mentioned and the Dems can get something out of their rescue. Gaetz can't get rid of him without some Dems, but Dems retain some chips if they keep him. None if one of the loons gets in.

I count Joe-investigating SINO as a loon minus one decent thing this year - a 45 day shutdown deferral. Big whoop. I don't think the GQP has the votes to elect someone loonier, and thus the less loony among them will be forced to propose a non-loon to the Dems. It is time to for patriots and humanists to reject Goofy Gaetz and the extremists with finality.

Good theory if it really worked that way. But I would never underestimate the Repugs ability and propensity to always elect someone loonier.

If they manage to out him (possible but not a certainty) there's no one that's going to get to 218 without some major dem help. But it's on the edge of possibility that a centrist could be elected and again with dem help, actually govern.

Of course not. The point is to make them irrelevant, for the sake of the GQP if nothing else. Time for non-Gaetzites to step up and the Dems can force it unless they foolishly, IMO, back SINO.

There's only 20 of them or so. A centrist could make them irrelevant.

 O Really MIGHT be correct, but things like this support our position:
House Republicans Finally Realize That Matt Gaetz Is a Raging Jerk

House Republicans are planning a motion to expel Matt Gaetz from the chamber, even as he continues to threaten to expel Kevin McCarthy from the speakership.

The House GOP will move to expel Gaetz if the Ethics Committee finds him guilty, Fox News reported Sunday. Earlier this year, committee investigators reopened a probe into the Florida Republican for allegations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and other wrongdoings.

Gaetz’s repeated threats to move to vacate McCarthy are apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back. “No one can stand him at this point,” a House Republican, speaking anonymously, told Fox. “A smart guy without morals.” ...

Have GoCubsGo and I ever mentioned that we're consultants for the DNC? The Dems might come up with 200+ reasons for their votes, that's how awful ex-SINO was, but I believe what put it over the top was his authorizing an impeachment investigation of Joe without the vote he'd promised.

Now, the test for our divergent prediction powers is whether we get a Speaker that's more or less wingnutty. It's even possible that we end up with a Dem. Perhaps not Hakeem Jeffries (NY), though - too liberal, too Black and too much of a capitulation for the unanimous Repugs to stomach.

Anyhow, ex-SINO will be listed as a FAILED Speaker, not impactful enough to warrant even a footnote.
