2024 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So we sent in our first ballot of the election year. Biden, Schiff, Levin. And we're getting some ads for wannabes. The "leading" repug wanting to take Levin's Congressional seat is Margarita Wilkinson https://thecoastnews.com/margarita-wilk ... -district/ who is a Mexican native immigrant and successful tech executive. So in her ads, does she focus on what a good leader she is? Or her personal story of rising through adversity? Or her ability to serve as a leader in a male-oriented environment? Or any of the other issues she touched on in her announcement - inflation, homelessness, yada? Nope. What does she say in her ads: Cartels (in Mexico) shot at her grandmother; killed some of her family and friends and that she "will" (single-handedly apparently) close the border and keep fentanyl out. Right.

Meanwhile, the guy who actually holds the job:
"As a Member of Congress, some of Mike’s top priorities are combating climate change, protecting our natural resources, and capitalizing on the economic benefits of a sustainable energy future. He has led legislation to transition the United States to zero emission vehicles, ban new offshore drilling along the coast of Southern California, responsibly develop renewable energy on public lands, and much more. "

Levin sounds really wonky, unfocused and boring :sleepy:
RepuQ Wilkinson conjures images of dodging narcotrafficker bullets and Wastin’ away in Margaritaville 8-)
Ut-oh :problem:

More seriously - If Levin > 50% is the election over, or is there a runoff, regardless?

How do you guys claim residency with a nomadic lifestyle? Don't you need a physical address besides a PO Box?

Strangely enough, yes. Even if there were only two candidates in the primary.

We've got a physical address where we park the UAV. But in California there are several ways to establish residency/domicile without one. If you stay here too long, they're going to count you as a California resident for tax purposes even if you think you're still from somewhere else. If you're homeless, you can count the street corner where you conduct your personal fund-raising events. (not really, but a homeless person can become a resident)

And there's a difference in a PO Box and a private mail service. The Post Office is rarely accepted as a "residence" anywhere, but the mail services do actually give you a valid street address, in a form similar to an apartment or condo, e.g., (number and street name) (Unit XXX) (city) (state).

I have not been following the election closely, but that surprises me. It was historically a blue-ish district where Santos was a surprise victor. How could the talking heads not count on post-Santos disgust with the GQP flipping the district back?

It became less of a "blowout" as the night wore on, 54-46 final. Phew.

With 3 GQP defections the House voted 214 to 213 for the stupid impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas yesterday. Once Suozzi is seated such votes will fail.

There's still three empty seats, not sure what that's all about.

Right.
427 voted
The 3 Repub Nays are: Buck (CO), Gallagher (WI), McClintock (CA)
https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/202443
2 Dems and 2 RepuQs did not vote, Idk why:
Chu (D-CA); Frankel, Lois (D-FL); Mast (R-FL); Salazar (R-FL)
Then, there's the seat Suozzi will fill, plus:
Current Vacancies of the 118th Congress
Brian Higgins (D-NY) Resigned February 02, 2024 - planned since at least Nov 2023, Wiki doesn't say why.
Bill Johnson (R-OH) Resigned January 21, 2024 to be president of Youngstown State University.
Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Resigned December 31, 2023. Buh-bye.

States have different methods and timelines for dealing with vacancies.

If Santos had been running, the Santos disgust probably would have resulted in a total flushing. But since he wasn't, you still had a bunch of repug-leaning people who did vote for Santos last time and probably figured they can't get burned so badly twice in a row so they'd still vote for the
sane-ish looking repug who chants border-border-border.

I want to replace a bunch of congresscritters with Pakistanis. Yes, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan where some Uber drivers still drive oxen and most people don't make it out of a grade 9 equivalent managed to elect people that do a better job than the US cluster-eff. Short version, without regard for whether these are actually nice people or not, they had a PM alledged to be corrupt. Booted him, now convicted and literally in jail, and the parliament's various parties managed to cobble together a coalition to govern. On the other hand, the US can't even manage a temporary collection of people willing to support common sense and significant bills.

Santos was a RepuQ product. I hoped that even more voters would remember that for at least one election. <Sigh>

Karamo believes that demonic possession is real and may be transferred through sexual relations. She has also said that abortion is child sacrifice and a satanic practice, that pop stars such as Beyonce, Jay-Z, Cardi B, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish are tools of Satan recruiting their followers into paganism, and that yoga is a ritual to summon demons.
      Yeah, that's a winner.
It's excellent that the swing state idiocy lasted into Feb of an election year. Why vote RepuQ?
Michigan GOP chair officially ousted after weeks of chaos
Kristina Karamo was voted out from her role in a vote last month.

... Karamo, an election-denier previously backed by former President Donald Trump, began serving as party chair last year after losing her bid to become secretary of state in 2022. Her far-right rhetoric as leader of the state party alienated donors and, along with debt issues, led some of her allies to join the push to remove her from her post.

She also refused to accept a January vote from Michigan Republicans that removed her as chair and claimed the meeting was illegitimate, plunging the party further into chaos....
Has she returned the washroom key yet?
