God & Country is a 2024 American documentary film directed by Dan Partland and produced by Rob Reiner. The film discusses the emergence of Christian nationalism and its close relationship with far-right politics in the United States, exploring its perceived threat to democracy and the politicization of Christianity. Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years - Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Payson High invites Kevin Bacon for ‘one last dance’ in celebration of “Footloose” 40th anniversary

On Feb. 17, 1984, Payson, Utah started dancing again.

This weekend the now-iconic 80s classic, “Footloose,” starring Kevin Bacon, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Though Bacon wasn’t the only star of the show. Payson High School set the scene for the movie, cementing its history not only in Utah but in Hollywood as well.

To celebrate, students and faculty at Payson High have been working so hard and punching their cards to eventually cut loose and kick off their Sunday shoes.

It’s been a Footloose kind of year at Payson High with events, dances, and even assignments centered around the 80s film. While the events have been a fun celebration of the movie, they hope to cap it all off with Kevin Bacon’s return to the famous high school for one last dance at prom on April 20 before the school is torn down and rebuilt....

The school’s social media team has posted several fun videos and photos with the hashtag #BacontoPayson using a cardboard cutout of Kevin Bacon enjoying life in the Utah County city. One English teacher created an assignment for her argumentative unit for students to write letters trying to convince Bacon to come back and the drama department reproduced the Footloose Musical to great success....

The school has been working with Kevin Bacon’s humanitarian foundation, Six Degrees, which the actor is very actively involved in. To celebrate the movie’s anniversary the organization has set a goal to build 40,000 essential resource kits. Payson High and Six Degrees will be teaming up on the day of the prom to build 5,000 of those kits, all of which will be donated to local charities selected by the Payson High student body....

I was just watching Today do a long segment on the #BacontoPayson campaign, capped off by Kevin Bacon facetiming live that he is indeed coming to prom in a month!!! "Let's dance," he said.

So yesterday we thought another "May Gray" day would be a good one to go see "Kingdom of the Plane of the Apes." It was entertaining and intense, BTW, but not the point of my post.



The Regal cinema in Oceanside is a very nice place, fairly newish or certainly remodeled within the last 10 years, 16 screens with current offerings, all with comfy seats and not-too-cold A/C, and decent prices (considering). Ever since covid, we've only gone to matinees, knowing there will be minimal crowd, but yesterday the entire place was almost totally empty. I had gotten tickets online, and noticed that the outdoor ticket office was closed and a sign directed people inside. The ticket-checking stand inside the door was unstaffed, but a sign directed us to the end of the concession stand. There, one lonely person seemed to be responsible for handing out popcorn or whatever had been ordered through the app as well as checking tickets. No lineup. Our film was playing in one of the stadium seating places, not the smaller ones, and nobody was there. Nobody. Eventually one other couple came and that was it. But there were 16 screens - how about the others? We didn't go in, but there were less than a handful of people in the lobby, hallways, and washrooms. OK, so we went mid-afternoon - how about people coming in when we left? Nope. I'm fairly sure that more people would show up later in the evening, but it was a strange experience to find absolutely nobody there on a Friday afternoon not fit for the beach. And it wasn't like people were staying home - the bars, restaurants, shops, and streets around the theatre had lots of people.

Was this just a fluke of day/time/location, or common everywhere? The last films we saw before this were Barbie and Oppenheimer I think, and although they were also matinees with light attendance, they weren't close to empty. Ironically, one of the ads that ran before the previews began was for streaming.

Apparently "Apes" was the second high grossing film this past week. Somebody was going to see it. And, as I mentioned, we have only gone to weekday matinees since covid so before wailing gloom and doom maybe I should look on a weekend night. But this is a nice theatre in a good location with reasonable-ish prices that was more empty than an A's merch store.
