I remember very few if any in Hendersonville in 2007.
So far I've noticed them to be very temperature reactive. We had our first big hatch a week ago Thursday after a very warm day. Then we had moderate temperatures and not much new activity. Friday was warm and sunny and we had another big hatch. I was watching them emerge from the ground and crawl up trees like an invading army in the evening.
The hum is starting to become invasive. Apparently they don't start making noise until five days to a week after emerging. Windows will probably have to be shut next week. It's gonna get worse, warm and humid on tap. I've only had one fall down my shirt to date. More to come I'm sure.
I'm going to break out the big straw hat soon and wear earbuds. My dog thinks they're absolutely delicious, it's a battle.

... WGNTV Chicago reports that male cicadas across the state's southern areas have been impacted by a sexually transmitted disease (STD) — a white fungus called Massospora cicadina — that turns the insects into "zombies" and causes their reproductive parts "to fall off."
Per the report, the STD "is expected to reach the Chicago area within weeks."
WGN notes "the fungus is also the type that has hallucinatory effects on birds that would eat infected cicadas."
University of Connecticut entomologist John Cooley told the Independent, "At least 10% of cicadas in the Midwest were infected with the fungus."...
Maybe muzzle the doggo? Wouldn't want its reproductive parts "to fall off."

My first thought as I was reading this.
Dog Muzzle, Soft Mesh Dog Muzzles for Small Medium Large Dogs, Breathable Dog Mouth Guard with Adjustable Strap and Fasten Buckle for Scavenging, Licking, Biting and Chewing(Black,XXS) https://a.co/d/eC34EKm
Or maybe not. What are Zombie Cicadas, and Can They Infect My Pet?
The term “zombie cicadas” refers to insects infected by a zombie-like fungus. While it makes for a good news story, this fungus is only a threat to the cicadas themselves. https://bettervet.com/resources/pet-saf ... -your-pets

That was my first thought, but then I read, "the fungus is also the type that has hallucinatory effects on birds that would eat infected cicadas."
So, there are cross-species effects. Dogs may be immune, but maybe not.

Yeah, I saw that. He generally nabs a couple a day when I'm not quick enough to scold him ( he knows not to eat them but just can't help himself .
I'm guessing less than half of the dog owners I've talked to around here have cicada eating dogs. Some just aren't interested. ) Probably not enough to do any real harm as long as he doesn't eat an infected bird.

If a bird walks up to your dog cooing, "Here kitty, kitty, kitty," good chance it's infected

A hunter spotted a donkey living with elks in northern California.
... The short clip of the unusual scene rapidly spread across social media. Now Terrie Drewry and her husband, Dave, have told CBS news that they are convinced the free-roaming burro is their missing pet Diesel, who had scarpered into the wilderness five years earlier.
“It was amazing. It was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Finally, we saw him. Finally, we know he’s good. He’s living his best life. He’s happy. He’s healthy, and it was just a relief,” Drewry told CBS....
Despite their joy, in seeing Diesel alive and apparently thriving as a want-to-be elk, they have no plans to try to capture him....
The actual hatch took place on two warm days about a week apart. They're still here for at least another couple of weeks and in full mating mode now. They fly around aimlessly, sometimes while mating and bounce off everything. They're harmless, but creepy. I was driving the other day and felt an itch under my sleeve, scratched it and out came a cicada. I've had at least four get down my shirt while walking the dog and numerous ones fly into my face. I'm in full paranoia mode now, with every itch having me check my shirt or pants for an unwelcome visitor.
And on warm days, they are freaking LOUD! Windows shut.
And the damn dog still thinks they are absolutely delicious, he loves to chase them in the air, jump up and nab a tasty treat. He actually got sick a few days ago from them. I should have bought him a mesh mask.
