2024 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Best take on who the winner of the debate is (via reddit comments): The real winner of tonight's debate is the Voyager space probe speeding away from earth at 17 km/s.

My proposal: Pump them each full of meth and other performance enhancing drugs and let them have a free format debate with no moderation and also a rap battle.

Refreshing, The Philadelphia Inquirer:
To serve his country, Donald Trump should leave the race | Editorial
Biden had a horrible night Thursday. But the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

President Joe Biden’s debate performance was a disaster. His disjointed responses and dazed look sparked calls for him to drop out of the presidential race.

But lost in the hand wringing was Donald Trump’s usual bombastic litany of lies, hyperbole, bigotry, ignorance, and fear mongering. His performance demonstrated once again that he is a danger to democracy and unfit for office.

In fact, the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

Trump, 78, has been on the political stage for eight years marked by chaos, corruption, and incivility. Why go back to that?

... Trump told more than 30 lies during the debate to go with the more than 30,000 mistruths told during his four years as president. He dodged the CNN moderators’ questions, took no responsibility for his actions, and blamed others, mainly Biden, for everything that is wrong in the world....

The debate served as a reminder of what another four years of Trump would look like. More lies, grievance, narcissism, and hate. Supporters say they like Trump because he says whatever he thinks. But he mainly spews raw sewage....

Trump’s term did plenty of damage and had few accomplishments. The much-hyped wall didn’t get built. Infrastructure week was a recurring joke. Giant tax cuts made the rich richer, while fueling massive deficits for others to pay for years. His support for coal, oil drilling and withdrawal from the Paris Agreement worsened the growing impact of climate change.

Trump stacked the judiciary with extreme judges consisting mainly of white males, including a number who the American Bar Association rated as not qualified. A record number of cabinet officials were fired or left the office. The West Wing was in constant chaos and infighting.

Many Trump appointees exited under a cloud of corruption, grifting and ethical scandals. Trump’s children made millions off the White House. His dilettante son-in-law got $2 billion from the Saudi government for his fledgling investment firm even though he never managed money before....

Yes, Biden had a horrible night. He’s 81 and not as sharp as he used to be. But Biden on his worst day remains lightyears better than Trump on his best....

There was only one person at the debate who does not deserve to be running for president. The sooner Trump exits the stage, the better off the country will be.

Questions:

1. Should Joe drop out?
2. Will Joe drop out?
3. If yes, who should the Dems nominate?
4. If yes, who will the Dems nominate?

Me:
Spoiler:

1. Yes, but I'm not sure that improves Dem odds.
2. Yes, if Kamala also drops out.
3. Michelle!
4. Newsom.

Here's mine
Spoiler:
1. I have thought so for some time, but now I'd say "no" after looking at how the various alternatives would likely play out.
2. No, not without some significant health or other catastrophe
3. Gavin
4. Harris

I don't think that Harris improves Dem chances. That's why I posted that Joe will drop out "if Kamala also drops out."

I'm sure Pritzker would do a good job if he got elected, but I think his chances would be slim. He doesn't have much of a national profile as far as I know, and the idea that a mafia-looking billionaire from Chicago who could be shaded with Blago scandal would be able to easily establish himself ..., dunno.

Think he may have a little bigger profile than you realize.

I like him, he's something of a left wing Chris Christie and afaik he's never missteped.

He's on a lot of people's lists, but it doesn't matter. As you said absent a real health concern, it's gonna be Biden.

Well, if true this isn't pretty. Panic city.

Joe needs to take charge, take responsibility for screwing the pooch and move on.

Umm, no offence, but surely you must be aware that other than the greater Chicago area, Illinois is the definition of flyover state?

Well, I don't think advisors who have a long record of good results should be fired, but I generally agree with some of the criticism. First, I don't think Biden should have agreed to "debate" Trump. And I agree that Biden should have been more offensive on addressing what he would do on the significant issues of economy and immigration. And whatever caused the weak hoarse voice should have been addressed up front, immediately, during the time of Biden's first question response. And yes, he should have been well rested.

Obviously in hindsight it was a huge mistake to.....whatever that was with trump. Probably should have been in foresight too. They thought they needed the debate to stem trump momentum and turn the tide.

But at that point I think it's all on Joe. It would be political malpractice if they prepped him to exhaustion, but they know him and I would have a hard time believing that advisers who have been with him for a long time could be that foolish.

I think the rest of it was on Joe, he seemed nervous and choked. It can happen to even the most experienced people with (unnecessary) stakes that high.

And hell, for all we know it could have been his family pushing him to debate.

I'm pretty sure "somebody", and I think it was I, said having a debate was unnecessary and a bad idea. Maybe others did to, and his ego wasn't having it.
