2024 Election Results....Here We Go!

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I am an elite at being a hater.
?
A hater of recent events.

But on a more serious note, what makes someone elite?
Ah.

One can be elite in different things, but I took O Really's question to mean financially since we were discussing difference from the working class.

Dunno. Somewhere along the line the term became derogatory among the right-wingers. Used to be it was good to get into an "elite" school, or serve in an "elite" function in the military, or work for an "elite" company in an industry. Now to be "elite" is pretty much the same as being "entitled", which is also usually misused.

I think there’s a difference in how it’s worded. Being “elite” is great. It means the best of the best, the highest of calibers. Examples: an elite athlete, an elite scholar, an elite scientist, etc.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being elite.

My problem is with “elitists.” I define that as people who regard themselves as elite, who think they are above others.

e·lit·ist
/əˈlēdəst,āˈlēdəst/
adjective
adjective: elitist
relating to or supporting the view that a society or system should be led by an elite.
"older men with an elitist attitude about music"
demonstrating a superior attitude or behavior associated with an elite.
"some that say he is a spoiled, elitist snob"
noun
noun: elitist; plural noun: elitists
a person who believes that a society or system should be led by an elite.
"critics portray him as an out-of-touch elitist"

Ut oh. I might have elitist tendencies. Regarding government, I think it's reasonable to expect that a person running for Congress has some relevant experience and sufficient education and knowledge to understand the laws they're voting on. I don't think that elective office is something that just anybody can do. I think if your gonna run for Congress you ought to have, at a minimum: (a) previous experience in an elective office - government is not a business or hobby; (b) some kind of academic or technical education past high school; (c) some education/training in broad legal topics, including judicial process.

It never ceases to amaze me that people think being a good accountant will somehow automatically make you a good Congress critter, but they won't let a good plumber do their taxes.

We Asked Young Men Why They Voted for Donald Trump—Here’s What They Said

... Many young men say they voted for the former president not because they are anti-choice or against human rights or are even that pro-masculinity, but because they’re tired of feeling bad for being a man....
Irony, whining about it and spite voting doesn't make you a man. :crybaby: :violin:

One of the Dem leaning House seats has been called for the Dem. The tally is now:
218 seats for majority

2024 election:
Dem 213
GQP 218
Not yet called 4:
1 Dem leaning
3 GQP leaning

2022 election:
Dem 213
GQP 222

Current
Dem 213
GQP 220
2 vacancies - Gaetz and Stefanik??

The GQP is on track to have LOST a seat in 2024 and to have the smallest elected majority ever. 221-214 means that only 4 defections, moderate or wingnut, LOSES a vote for the GQP.

I'll bet that historic vote totals continued and the majority of Americans voted for a Dem candidate (Wiki doesn't say). This is the power of gerrymandering and voter suppression. There's also the power of incumbency:

Results

Four incumbents (two Democrats and two Republicans) lost renomination in the primary elections.
In general elections
Three Democrats, including one freshman, lost re-election to Republicans.
Five Republicans, four of whom were freshmen, lost re-election to Democrats.
Open seats that changed parties
Three Republican seats were won by Democrats (one is nonvoting Puerto Rico at-large)
Four Democratic seats were won by Republicans.
Democrats held twenty-four of their open seats.
Republicans held twenty-three of their open seats.

The map is even more shocking:

Image

Net changes to U.S. House seats after the 2024 elections
Light blue: +1 Dem House seat,
Dark blue: +3 Dem House seats (NY  )
Pink: +1 Rep House seat, Red: +2 Rep House seats,
Dark red: +3 Rep House seats (NC only  )

It's shameful that the system is gamed to ensure so little change.

Popular vote totals make Trump’s ‘mandate’ look like a mirage

... The problem, of course, is that reality keeps getting in the way. The New York Times published a compelling analysis, explaining that the Republican’s victory “was neither unprecedented nor a landslide.”

In fact, he prevailed with one of the smallest margins of victory in the popular vote since the 19th century and generated little of the coattails of a true landslide. The disconnect goes beyond predictable Trumpian braggadocio. The incoming president and his team are trying to cement the impression of a “resounding margin,” as one aide called it, to make Mr. Trump seem more popular than he is and strengthen his hand in forcing through his agenda in the months to come.

... As things stand, according to the latest tally from the Cook Political Report, Trump won 49.86% of the popular vote — a margin of 1.6% over Vice President Kamala Harris. (The Democratic nominee, interestingly enough, came up short while winning a higher percentage of the popular vote than Trump received in 2016 or 2020.)

The bottom line is unambiguous: As a matter of arithmetic, the 2024 contest was a close race in which more Americans voted against him than for him.

This is relevant, not for practical reasons, but for political ones. Trump’s many critics can declare, accurately and honestly, to the nation and the world, that the incoming president lacks an electoral mandate. The incoming president and his allies, meanwhile, can try to claim that he's the one true voice of the nation, but the popular vote totals point in the opposite direction.

When some news organizations reported on this last week, Karoline Leavitt, the incoming White House press secretary, responded via social media, “New Fake News Narrative Alert! ... The fake news is trying to minimize President Trump’s massive and historic victory to try to delegitimize his mandate before he even takes the Oath of Office again.”

But the pushback is baseless. There’s nothing “fake” about actual election results, whether Republicans approve of them or not. Using the word “mandate” over and over again will not change the outcome or make Trump's coming overreach any less outrageous.

Agreed, and the article says exactly that. However, the "mandate" :bs: in an effort to create the illusion of an even stronger position is debunked. If it doesn't matter the RepuQs would not be screeching about it so desperately.

Yeah, I see a lot of "mandate" nonsense from the right. But since virtually everything out of trump's mouth is a lie, and the GQP is now weaned on that, they have no problem lying about a "mandate." Bullshit.....more like a "blind date."

The repugs barely managed to elect a Speaker and when they did, it was Johnson the johnson and they had to have Dem help. I can't see why anyone would think they could manage to be so consistently unified on every issue to pass stuff by themselves.

The GQP leaning House seat has been called for the GQP. In one of the Dem leaning seats Democrat Derek Tran has flipped California’s 45th congressional district (Orange and Los Angeles counties) after a weeks-long count.

The tally is now:
218 seats for majority

2024 election:
Dem 214
GQP 220
Not yet called 1 Dem leaning (barely)

And then there was 1, CA13 (San Joaquin Valley). A Dem win would be a flip.
