I Raised Millions for Democrats. At the DNC, I Realized They're the Party of the Rich | Opinion
In my 30s, after years of heavy involvement in Dem Party politics, I came to many of the same conclusions the writer has. Both parties are beholden to the fat cats and corporate interests, even more so since Citizens United.

I would suggest the author consider that one or the other of two - two - political parties are going to govern. That's it. Wishing for something else won't make it true. Wishing for a party of working people who miraculously come up with enough money to win elections ainagonna make it happen. So she can consider what the Dems have done that she considers positive and consider what repugs do in office. Then she can vote for the Dems, clay feet and all, or vote for the repugs. Or drop out entirely, which is a vote for the repugs.Vrede too wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 11:55 pmI Raised Millions for Democrats. At the DNC, I Realized They're the Party of the Rich | Opinion

Re: Eat the Rich
She doesn't say how she will vote. I suspect that she is still repulsed by the RepuQs. Rather, it sounds like she will no longer devote her life to the Dem Party. I wasn't as hardcore as her, but I reached the same conclusion. I made the conscious decision to focus on the issues I care about, instead. Maybe she'll work with a union or otherwise for economic justice. For me it's often meant working with and sometimes for Dems, but being a Party hack was just too much of a compromise of my values.O Really wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 12:16 amI would suggest the author consider that one or the other of two - two - political parties are going to govern. Just curious, without the support of the "elite rich" party members, which I suppose technically includes me, and refusing legal PAC contributions, how many elections does the author think the "People" are going to win?

Does she say that she doesn't want "the support of the 'elite rich' party members"? Where?

Works for me

I read it more as being about what to add - an affirmative action (my words) for the working class - rather than what to subtract. Why is it that young Black men are proving to be the toughest Blacks for Kamala to sway? Maybe they're not seeing the benefits of Dem rule and some lean to an agent of chaos like Dolt .45.

Re: Eat the Rich
America's top 10% controls 60% of the wealth. The bottom half holds 6%.
The top 10% of wealthy Americans now control 60% of the nation’s wealth, while the poorer half of the country holds only 6%, according to a report from the Congressional Budget Office....
The report found wealth inequality on the rise, even when you factor in Social Security:
* The top 10% of Americans held 60% of all wealth in 2022, up from 56% in 1989.
* The top 1% held 27% of all wealth in 2022, up from 23% in 1989.
* Families in the bottom half held only 6% of wealth in both 1989 and 2022.
The analysis “is stating the obvious, that wealth in the United States is concentrated, and getting more so,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “This has been in the makings, really, for two generations, maybe three. And the trendlines are disconcerting.”

... Most Americans believe there is too much economic inequality in America, according to a 2020 report from Pew Research. More than half of Americans also believe rich people and corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes....
Whitehouse, the senator who requested the report, is using the findings to argue for higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans, echoing the Harris platform.
In 2017, then-President Trump signed legislation that lowered taxes across all income groups, with wealthier taxpayers benefiting the most, according to the nonprofit PolitiFact. Those cuts are set to expire at the end of 2025.
"Our corrupted tax code has helped enable a few ultra-rich individuals to capture for themselves more than a quarter of our nation’s wealth, undermining the American middle class and hollowing out local communities," Whitehouse said.
Trump has said he will extend the cuts if voters reelect him. Harris has pledged to extend most of the cuts, but to raise tax rates on the very wealthiest Americans, and on wealthy corporations.
Some economists have urged both parties to consider even steeper taxes. In one recent analysis, researchers found that the government could raise $1.8 trillion over a decade by restoring the higher tax rates of 1997.
“It would raise trillions and bring the tax code back to an era of fiscal responsibility and strong economic growth,” said Zidar, who joined in the research.

(Kyle) Pomerleau, at the American Enterprise Institute, concurs that taxing the wealthy could raise funds and shore up Social Security – to a point....

Kroger and Albertsons grocery megamerger halted by two courts
Kroger and Albertsons saw their $24.6 billion merger blocked on Tuesday by judges in two separate cases, one brought by federal regulators and the other by the Washington state attorney general.
What would be the biggest grocery merger in U.S. history is now in legal peril after over two years of delays. The companies could choose to continue their legal appeals or abandon the deal. They await another ruling in a third lawsuit in Colorado.
Kroger runs many familiar grocery stores, including Ralphs, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer and King Soopers. Albertsons owns Safeway and Vons....

Re: Eat the Rich
I think that's good news. Here, it looks like we've got some choices, but we really don't. We usually shop Von's, but it's the same as the Albertson's. And we have Ralph's. But there's only one chain that isn't associated with those two - Stater Brothers. And of course WalMart neighborhood market. With the merger there wouldn't even be any pretend competition and you know they'd close up some stores. Some items may vary from store to store, but I don't think there would be a lot of difference comparing a complete cart. Vons does the best job with their app and individualized coupons and sales. Anyway, I'm happy if the merger gets stopped.

Truth.Washington Post Cartoonist Ann Telnaes Quits After Bezos-Owned Paper Kills Trump Satire Piece
Washington Post editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit after a satirical cartoon, which poked fun at the paper’s owner Jeff Bezos and other media and tech giants bending the knee to President-elect Donald Trump, was killed.
The Pulitzer Prize winner shared her decision in a Substack post Friday.
“I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations—and some differences—about cartoons I have submitted for publication, but in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now,” she said.
Telnaes had worked at the Washington Post since 2008. She described the political cartoon that did not get published, saying it “criticizes the billionaire tech and media chief executives who have been doing their best to curry favor with incoming President-elect Trump.”
The Washington Post did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
The cartoon included Facebook and Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Los Angeles Times publisher Patrick Soon-Shiong, the “Walt Disney Company/ABC News” depicted as Mickey Mouse and Washington Post owner Bezos. A rough draft of the scrapped cartoon can be seen below.
HeroTelnaes criticized Bezos for his handling of the Washington Post in the months leading up to Trump’s election and those to follow. The paper did not endorse a presidential candidate in 2024 for the first time in decades, leading to three editorial board member resignations and widespread canceled subscriptions.
“Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press,” the cartoonist said of her former boss.
“As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable. For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post,” she said. “I doubt my decision will cause much of a stir and that it will be dismissed because I’m just a cartoonist. But I will not stop holding truth to power through my cartooning, because as they say, ‘Democracy dies in darkness.’”

Re: Eat the Rich
"It's Completely Absurd": People Are Sharing Things That Rich People Have "Ruined" For Everyone Else
Examples:
Examples:
12."Concerts. You can’t even buy a beer at a concert these days for what a general admission ticket used to cost, and people still pay for it."
13."Music festivals. They used to be a bunch of hippies having a good time and doing drugs. Now it's all rich kids taking selfies dressed as hippies and doing drugs."
20."Rental homes. The overabundance of Airbnbs and $2,000 studio apartments in rural/suburban places is outrageous and ruining the opportunities for low-income and working-class people to have a roof over their heads. I live in New York state, and ever since COVID, all these rich city folk are buying up all the cheap places in the country and trying to make a profit off of them."

Blueprint for authoritarian oligarchy:
Under Trump’s Thumb, Mark Zuckerberg Has No F---s Left to Give. The F-Word Here is Facts
META'S MAGA MAKEOVER
It’s time we all admitted that Donald Trump’s success—and certainly his re-election—reveals the degree to which our democracy has been decaying for decades.
As with AGW, perhaps, have we already lost? I'm starting to wish that I was older.

I remember when WaPo was an integral part of a leisurely Sunday morning, with national and local news, entertainment and culture sections, sports, including support of @RealSkins, book and film reviews, and the best comics anywhere. The opinion sections contained many excellent columnists, nationally syndicated and local In more recent years, I was a digital subscriber, then dropped them, still got email highlights. Sadly, I totally "unsubscribed", then blocked them and deemed them "junk." Tossed my subscription gift bottle inscribed with "Democracy Dies in Darkness". Ironically, my former password for my WaPo account was "NoDarkness"Vrede too wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 12:17 pmThe oligarchy marches on:
