The Missouri State Highway Patrol acknowledged Thursday that it has twice provided a list of 163,000 Missouri residents with concealed gun permits to a federal investigator — an admission immediately seized upon by Republicans as grounds for further investigations, firings and potentially even criminal charges against state officials.

Up until relatively recently, gun permits were open records - at least in FL. Shortly after I got a CWP, I got "greetings" from the NRA. Guess where they got my name. Why should they not be public, though - at least as much so as any other license? I'm not ashamed of mine.

Nor am I ashamed of mine, but there's no reason for this...or other licenses...to be available to the general public. Is there a compelling reason for Joe down the street to know that I have a driver's license? Is that the purpose of the license?

How about this....the state decides that you need a license to own gold...would you want the government to broadcast that information to everyone?

You might want to give that a little more thought. Most people think it's a good thing for information held by governmental units to be public. Some places call them "sunshine laws" or some other cutesey name meaning to imply that there are no dark secrets. As to your question, let's make it a little more realistic and say that I have to have a license to buy and sell gold. Yes, that ought to be a public record just like my law license.

This site pertains only to Florida, but look at what records are available, and what is excluded. Consider the exclusion is recently created. Why are those records excluded? How do they differ in any significant way from any of the other data? Ummmm, that would be because of the NRA-owned legislators. They don't need a logical reason.

Plus, an informed member of the public can report a gun license holder that s/he believes is barred from holding one due to criminal or mental health history. As Partisan62 well knows, bureaucracies are not perfect in their data collection and management. Do you want felons and crazies to have guns, Partisan62?

I've had an open carry and a CWP for years. Recently I went to a private firing range to brush up on my skills; and not long afterward, I too received a "greetings" and a solicitation from NRA too join. Using their postage-free envelope, I told them in no uncertain terms that I had no interest in them and
I felt my privacy was violated by the gun range owner who did not get my permission to give them my name. I told them to remove my name from any
file they might have on me. I received a form letter of "apology" (if you could call it that) stating they were unaware I was not a gun owner...(duh) and
that the letter was sent in error. I notified the range owner that if he gave/gives my name to anyone else, citing privacy laws, I would see him in court.

I'm not ashamed of my license, I am proud that I have a right to carry, but I also feel that people should have a right to their privacy.

I'm also a privacy advocate (whatever "privacy" might mean now), but there is a difference in "confidential" and "secret." I think "public records" should in fact be available to the public, and that the public is better served by having access than by having access denied. However, that doesn't mean that everybody, for any reason or no reason, should have access to all records. It's reasonable to ask an inquirer "why do you want it" and also to record the request and information about the requester. There was a big flap in Florida after Dale Earnhardt got killed regarding public access to autopsy information, which eventually got restricted. But IMNVHO, licenses should be open to the public. Retail licenses, medical licenses, legal licenses, massage licenses, mani-pedi licenses, and...concealed weapon permits.

I find it hilarious that the same bubba who claims he doesn't want anybody to know he has a gun has an NRA bumper sticker and a "cold dead fingers" sticker on the back of his truck.
