The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I saw Crosby Stills Nash on one of their last tours. Wish I hadn't.
Awww.
But you enjoyed Elton John, O Really. I mostly gave up on old rockers, but War and Santana put on good shows.

Tony Hawk Reveals Why He Wishes Kurt Cobain Was Still Alive, And It’ll Break Your Heart
The skateboarding legend and the late Nirvana frontman share a very intimate link.

... Cobain died by suicide in 1994, leaving his wife, musician and actor Courtney Love, to raise their 20-month-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, on her own.

Frances Bean Cobain (left), Kurt Cobain's daughter, married Tony Hawk’s son, Riley Hawk.

i’m about to get my period it’s 7 in the morning and this made me sob in public
I choose to believe in the multi-verse bc there has to be a timeline where Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk are hanging out together, being the coolest F*ing grandpas ever. That has to exist. I choose that in a parallel world, it does.
... On the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death in April 2024, Frances Bean Cobain posted a tribute to her dad on Instagram in which she admitted that she’s been grieving him “for almost as long as I’ve been conscious.”...

Yeah, but Elton didn't sing off-key and weak. Crosby was a sad shell of himself. Or maybe I just caught them on a bad night.

Speaking of dead supersingers, RIP Judy Garland.
Judy Garland’s Daughter Reacts To Ariana Grande's 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' Rendition
The daughter of the "Wizard of Oz" star watched Grande's Oscars performance and took to Instagram to share the family's thoughts.

Grande’s Sunday night rendition of the song did Garland justice, according to Lorna Luft, daughter of the cinema icon. Grande opened the awards show with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” followed by Cynthia Erivo singing “Home” from 1978′s “The Wiz.” The two “Wicked” co-stars concluded their performance with a duet of “Defying Gravity” from the film.

On Monday, Luft shared a heartfelt message in an Instagram Story screenshotted by People. In it, she thanked Grande, Cynthia Erivo and the Academy “for honoring my mother’s memory so beautifully.”

Luft added that she and her family are “very grateful.”

During her performance, Grande also honored the “Wizard of Oz” origins of “Wicked” with a fashion statement. The radiant red dress she wore, designed by Daniel Roseberry, included a literal ruby slipper on the back.

The “Thank U, Next” singer had another major fan rooting for her, too. In a video posted to Instagram on Monday, her brother, Frankie Grande, was seen hosting an Oscars watch party, dubbing the event, “The Gay Super Bowl.” As his sister began singing, an emotional Frankie Grande, eyes brimming with tears, exclaimed, “Oh my God, oh my God.”

In a caption, he called it the “best opening” to an Oscars “ever! Of all time!”

The Go-Go's
2020, 1h 38m, Documentary/Music

95% Tomatometer, 94% Popcornmeter

The Go-Go's become the first successful, all-girl band to write their own songs and play their own instruments while making it to No. 1 on the charts.
I was never really a fan, saw one show with my youngest brother during one of their reunion tours. The doc is interesting and well made, a history of early '80s punk and pop.

Anybody see the Elton John/Brandi Carlisle performance last night. Excellent - they blend well together and the ol' knight doesn't seem to have lost a step.

‘In the Navy’ was almost an official Navy recruiting song

But seeing as the band was, for the most part, an openly gay band in the late 1970s, upon closer inspection, the lyrics seemed to be filled with double entendre. To the Navy, it began to be seen as an anthem for promoting homosexual intercourse while underway. :wtf:

“… If you like adventure,
Don’t you wait to enter,
The recruiting office fast.
Don’t you hesitate,
There is no need to wait,
They’re signing up new seamen fast…”

Lady Gaga Plays Biggest Show of Career for 2 Million People at Copacabana Beach

:-|| x 2M.
Do we have a venue that could handle 2M?
1.8 million people was one estimate for Obama's first inauguration in 2009.
Could we do a free 2M concert at night without multiple shootings, gang rapes, widespread property destruction and riotous cops?
Will anyone try?

I thought maybe National Mall, even though most wouldn't be able to see the stage at all, but then I read a calculation by somebody that it wouldn't likely hold more than 1.4 mill. Probably do it at a non-permanent site in the desert like Coachella, or maybe a stage on a bluff with the crowd on a beach, but that would have to be California. Florida has no bluff and no beaches that aren't filled with condos anymore.

No, definitely not, and no.

The thought of a concert of that size is completely unappealing.

Yeah, it's really just more like an "event" that you may or may not enjoy at the time but can always remember you "were there." Lady O v1.0 got to go the the Beatles in Shea Stadium. Wasn't that much of a show. Sound wasn't good and they played less than an hour, but it was a lifetime memory.

LOL ,
My sister went to the Beatles at the old Comiskey Park, she was really young and actually didn't want to go. I read they played about a dozen songs for about 45 minutes. She says she couldn't actually hear anything....but she was there!

The infrastructure for something that size must be impressive: construction, 2-way transportation, acoustics, video screens, toileting, solid waste, hydration, food, medical, safety and security, cleanup, financing . . .

Or not.....it is Brazil, not known for it's impressive government services or cleanliness.

It's the most famous beach in Brasil, no one wants to see it destroyed.

I think they all got dealt with one way or another and with varying levels of efficiency. Gaga would not have agreed to play a certain social calamity, and everyone had the similar-sized Madonna concert as a learning experience.

Brasilian police say they stopped a multi-person molotov cocktail terror attack on the concert. If true, YAY!
