The Religion Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Does anybody else find it peculiar that they have a jumbotron set up so that the crowd can see smoke signals?

In 1998, Prevost was elected provincial of the Augustinian Province of Chicago and returned to the United States to assume that position on March 8, 1999....

In 2001, Prevost was elected to a six-year term as Prior General of the Augustinians. He was elected to a second six-year term in 2007. From 2013 to 2014, Prevost served as director of formation in the Convent of St. Augustine in Chicago, as well as first councilor and provincial vicar of the province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, which covers the midwestern United States.

Prevost was ordained a priest by Archbishop Jean Jadot for the Augustinians in Rome on June 19, 1982. He earned a Licentiate of Canon Law in 1984 and a Doctor of Canon Law degree in 1987 from the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

... At the September 30 (2023) consistory, Francis appointed him cardinal-deacon of Santa Monica degli Agostiniani Church in Rome.

On February 6, 2025, Francis promoted Prevost to cardinal-bishop, assigning him to the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano in the Province of Rome.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a resident of Maryland.

That's a lot of connections for our small conclave. Maybe we should change the name to the Holy Order of BRD or Blue Ridge Diocese.

At distance white smoke difficult to see in the glare of a bright day and if there's a breeze? Some sight lines blocked if near a building? -0-?

Priest on TV news: "Leo" suggests an alignment with workers, labor and the poor. If so, cool. Continue Francis' legacy.

Major time spent in Latin America through difficult years is a big plus. Wiki: "Prevost speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, and can read Latin and German." Wow.

IIRC the Sistine Chapel is off to the side and behind the plaza with limited direct line of sight.

Sorry you guys missed my effort at humour. I just thought the fact that they had Hi-Tech equipment and capability and still sent smoke signals was a strange juxtaposition.

New Pope’s Brother Shares Unexpected Detail About Conclave Prep And Baseball Loyalty
John Prevost described Pope Leo XIV's historic election as "totally unreal."

... Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who now goes by his selected papal name of Pope Leo XIV, on Thursday made history as the first U.S.-born pontiff. Leo XIV, who emerged triumphant after four rounds of voting, is originally from Chicago’s South Side, according to the Chicago-Sun Times and The New York Times.

In a separate interview with WGN, Prevost revealed which Chicago baseball team his brother supports.

“He was never, ever a Cubs fan. So I don’t know where that came from,” Prevost said. “He was always a [White] Sox fan.”

Prevost added that the confusion over the new pope’s team loyalty may have stemmed from their mother’s roots.

“Our mother was a Cubs fan,” he said. “Our mom’s family was from the north side. That’s why they were Cubs fans.”
