2025 elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Good grief. 8 million people in NYC and this is the best they can do? A Republican vigilante, a crook and a "socialist Muslim?
Would an old, disgraced, crook-adjacent, sexual harassing Andrew Cuomo have been better than a young socialist Muslim?

Probably not. Asd him to the good grief list too. Seriously, that's all they can come up with? To lead on of the greatest cities in the world?

To be fair, we don't know yet whether inexperienced Zohran Mamdani will make a bad candidate or mayor. Fingers crossed.

And only 500,000 people turn out to what is essentially the election
We can look for polling but I don't think that Zohran Kwame Mamdani is a shoe-in.
No idea what turnout is like in off year general elections in NY. But I'd think the independent candidates, a not popular mayor and a disgraced former governor would likely cancel each other out an who cares about the republican.

Anything can happen in a multi-candidate election. The question will be if there are enough diehard Dems who don't mind voting for a pro-Palestinian Muslim socialist.
‘Let’s F**king Go’: Zohran Mamdani Supporters Celebrate ‘Ray Of Light’ In A Dark Political Moment
A rooftop viewing party for the candidate erupted in cheers as his lead became apparent Tuesday night.

... “It’s a message of optimism and hope and no one else is delivering that,” added Julie, a 38-year-old Brooklyn resident. “People don’t want to just doomscroll on their phone all day. Zohran is saying a better world is possible.”

Mamdani’s victory is a seismic win for progressives and one that supporters see as sending a decisive message to the Democratic Party, which has often been skittish about embracing those on the left....

“[New York] is where the mayor will use his power to reject Donald Trump’s fascism, to stop ICE agents from deporting our neighbors and to govern our city as a model for the Democratic Party,” Mamdani said, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “A party where we fight for working people with no apology.”
Zohran Mamdani Isn’t The Only Winner Of New York City’s Mayoral Primary
Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s defeat was a moment of triumph for the dozen or so women who accused him of sexual harassment.

Andrew Cuomo suffered a shocking and humiliating defeat in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night. Despite possessing pseudo-incumbency as a nearly three-term governor of the state, arguably the most recognizable last name in New York politics and a massive fundraising advantage, he lost to Zohran Mamdani, a relative political newcomer who is just 33 years old. Cuomo lost so quickly on Tuesday that he conceded before the city even counted rank choice votes.

Across the five boroughs, many of the people the pugilistic former governor angered over the years rejoiced. Brad Lander, another mayoral candidate and current city comptroller, told a crowd of supporters that “Andrew Cuomo is in the past. He is not the present or future of New York City.”

”Good fucking riddance,” he added.

Joel Wertheimer, who worked for Cuomo beginning in 2017, shared his own thoughts on Bluesky as it became clear the former governor was in trouble. “From the depths of my heart: fuck Andrew Cuomo and everybody who works for him.”
:---P :---P
... It came as a shock to many of the women when Cuomo announced in March his candidacy for New York City mayor. It was even more stunning when many of those same Democrats who had called for his departure now supported his bid for mayor.

After last night’s upset, (Lindsey, the first woman to accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment) Boylan had only three words for those Democrats: “Shame on you.”
:---P
... Mamdani’s campaign did energize the heavily blue city, quickly creating a reckoning within the Democratic establishment that had mainly endorsed Cuomo.
 The fucking Democratic establishment will never change.
... “While I am relieved today and I feel really optimistic about last night’s outcome, I’m not going to count my chickens before they hatch,” (Ana, who accused Cuomo of inappropriate workplace behavior) Liss said, referring to Cuomo possibly still running as an independent. “We’ll see what happens in November.”
Fingers crossed.
Zohran Mamdani Reacts To Trump's Attack Following NYC Mayoral Primary Success
The president dubbed the democratic socialist a "100% Communist Lunatic."

... “You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani added that Trump has so far failed to fulfill his campaign promise of lowering prices, noting that this could be an issue “that I would be willing to work with him.”
:---P
... “If he continues to focus on persecuting political enemies and on trying to detain and disappear New Yorkers, be it on the basis of their documentation or their sexual orientation or their politics, that is someone that I will fight time and again,” Mamdani told ABC....

Obama Steps Into the Ring to Deliver a Knockout Blow to Trump

The headline might be a tad optimistic. Nov 4 -
... The upcoming gubernatorial (other statewide offices) and state legislative elections in New Jersey are widely seen as a test of how well the party might perform in the 2026 midterms, where Democrats hope to reclaim control of the House and face the steeper challenge of winning back the Senate....
Fingers crossed.

Also:
The 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election will be held on November 4, 2025, to elect the governor of Virginia. Incumbent Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin is ineligible to run for re-election, as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the state's governors from serving consecutive terms.

Former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger is the Democratic nominee (White), and Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears is the Republican nominee. If elected, Earle-Sears would become the first black female governor in U.S. history. Both Spanberger and Earle-Sears won their respective parties' nominations unopposed. Whoever wins the general election will be sworn in as the 75th governor of Virginia on January 17, 2026. This is the first gubernatorial election in Virginia where both major party nominees are female. Virginia is one of 18 states that has never had a female governor.

Sure, skipping the ballot line or staying home.

Endorsements in the 2025 NYC mayoral general election
Here’s who’s backing whom in a five-way race.

Mamdani looks quite strong organizationally, racking up backing from prominent pols and other individuals, labor and NGOs. However, the article begins with major caveats re endorsements in this race.
Zohran Mamdani Gets Potential Warning Sign in New Poll

What To Know

In the HarrisX poll released Tuesday, Mamdani received 26 percent of the vote in a four-way race. Cuomo picked up 23 percent; Adams collected 13 percent; and Sliwa landed 22 percent.

Cuomo, Mamdani and Sliwa all fall within the margin of error of 4.1 percent. The survey was conducted online July 7 and July 8 among 585 registered New York City voters.

The poll was also conducted before Cuomo announced his bid to run as an independent.
:problem: However:
Laura Tamman, clinical assistant professor of political science at Pace University, to Newsweek via email Tuesday: "This pollster does not have a strong track record in general, and specifically in this race: https://www.harrisx.com/posts/fix-the-c ... er-mamdani. I would not make any judgements based on their data."
:---P

RCP includes the Harris poll and a second one, Data for Progress, to get an average of Mamdani +9.5.

With virtually no expertise I predict:
Mamdani's 4 opponents will divide the cons, many (most?) Jews and some of the moderates;
Mamdani will take the lib/progs and some of the moderates, along with a huge Muslim turnout to win a plurality. Cuomo comes in second.

Does that win the race? If there's a runoff it will be tight. Will moderate women hold their noses and vote for the serial sexually harassing former Gov?

It's early yet, but this is interesting in the wake of Kamala declining to run:

RCP Average 7/28 - 8/12 Rep Katie Porter +8.5 at 19.5%. In a tie for second are two RepuQs at 11%. A RepuQ taking second is the perfect runoff scenario for any Dem.

NYC Mayor’s Race: New poll shows Mamdani comfortably ahead, but without majority, in 5-way race

Democratic mayoral nominee and frontrunner Zohran Mamdani remains comfortably ahead in the five-way general election race for mayor — and across several scenarios in which one or more of his rivals drop out, a Gotham Polling and AARP survey released Tuesday revealed.

The poll of 1,376 likely New York City voters, taken on Aug. 11, shows Mamdani leading the five-way race with nearly 42% of the vote. He is followed by independent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (23.4%), Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa (16.5%), independent incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (8.8%), and independent attorney Jim Walden (1.4%). The other 7.9% remain undecided.
Sliwa, Adams and Walden are dead in the water.
... In a head-to-head matchup with Cuomo, in which all of the other candidates drop out, Mamdani is still ahead by 11 points (42% to 31.0%). In that scenario, 27% of voters, who are mostly older and split fairly evenly between parties, are still undecided, the poll found.

“Mamdani sits on a hard floor around 40% but likely to have a firm ceiling below a majority; in a split field, that’s enough to stay ahead. Cuomo has the best path of the challengers, but even in a hypothetical one-on-one in an election that often favors lower-turnout, older electorates, he still trails by double digits,” said Gotham Polling and Analytics President Stephen Graves.

“The opening for a comeback is the sizable uncommitted bloc in the consolidation tests – roughly 11% to 35% depending on who drops – which means a disciplined persuasion campaign could still make this a race,” he added.
:headscratch: The article doesn't say whether a plurality wins the race or if there's a runoff. Bad reporting. GoMamdaniGo!

Harbinger of things to come? More like this and DonOLD's sleazy, corrupt, undemocratic gerrymandering won't matter.

I'm kinda ignorant about NYC politics, but this seems like a big deal to me:
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul endorses Zohran Mamdani in NYC mayoral race

... Hochul’s endorsement, published in The New York Times, makes her the latest high-profile Democrat and the most powerful in the state to back the 33-year-old democratic socialist’s campaign. It also puts new pressure on other high-profile Democrats withholding their backing of Mamdani, notably House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Brooklyn residents....
This gives wavering libs and mods permission to choose Mamdani.
