Re: O Canada
As one would expect, my seasonal neighbors in Greater Vancouver don't have anything good to say about Agent Orange. The area from Vancouver south to Bellingham has long been everybody's "home" area with free and frequent passage from one side of the border to another. Some things are cheaper on the south side of the border; some on the north. Now it's like Trump put up an invisible-but-real "Beautiful wall" with his tariffs and talk about "51st state." Once, Canadians sang "O Canada" with the line "... we stand on guard for thee" sung in tradition, but now they're taking it more seriously. Except for our CA plates, we blend in well, and if it weren't for the complications of health insurance coverage, we'd be soooo gone.

Re: O Canada
There came a point in my career when I learned that I'd waited too long to emigrate and would never qualify for Canadian healthcare or social security.

You're pretty comfortable. You couldn't have just bought your way out of those complications? If not, I guess I feel better for not trying.

Yeah, you have to live in Canada for two straight years to get Medicare, and there is private insurance that you can buy. And from southern BC, you could use US Medicare in places like Bellingham that has decent services or Seattle that has great services but Lady O has some issues that aren't' available everywhere and is in very good shape here. But if younger, with reasonable expectations of not getting anything serious within a couple of years, and already buying private insurance in the US - outtahere in a New York minute. We love California and would miss a lot about here, especially weather, but I'm sick and tired of living in a country with enough people willing to vote Trump and his minions into office and where he can ignore law, custom, and common decency and nobody does anything about it.Vrede too wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 1:20 pmThere came a point in my career when I learned that I'd waited to long to emigrate and would never qualify for Canadian healthcare or social security.![]()

Re: O Canada
2 years isn't bad since I had been planning on working, anyhow. Maybe it was the length of employed time needed to qualify for social security that dissuaded me. Better to just keep paying into US SSI.O Really wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 1:47 pmYeah, you have to live in Canada for two straight years to get Medicare, and there is private insurance that you can buy. Sorry about Lady O's issues. I'm glad that SDish works out.

Trump Gets Openly Ridiculed After 'Unhinged' New Claim About Canada
Critics made comedy gold out of the president's latest attempt to convince Canada to become a U.S. state.

Also, TACO Don's creepy gold obsession is Midas-like.

... Politico reported last week that Canada would need to allow radar and airspace access for the U.S. military to be able to track and respond to potential missiles coming from China or Russia via the polar region.
Carney said last week his country was discussing some form of cooperation.

... Carney is actively looking to decrease Canada’s reliance on the U.S. for its security and is currently working on a plan for increased defense cooperation with the European Union instead.
“Seventy-five cents of every dollar of capital spending for defense goes to the United States,” he told the CBC. “That’s not smart.” ...
Trump is threatening Canada once again and says they are “considering the offer” to be annexed. When will this unhinged lunatic get over this??? It’s not happening. Canada will remain sovereign, and Trump will remain unsuccessful.
I have a feeling this is the first that Canada is hearing about them considering the offer.
Congressman Robert Garcia (D-Long Beach, CA)
They are in fact, not considering the offer.

Actual footage of Canada considering the offer.

Happy Canada Day to all.
And you won't be getting a "Happy Independence Day" out of me this year. As things turned out, we'd be better off as Brits.

I'm Cackling Seeing All These Canadians Diss Americans Using The Phrase "Elbows Up" — So Here's What It Means, And Why It's Such A Perfect Insult
"Elbows up" might just be my new favourite comeback.

LCBO is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.
Elbows up, hominy O Really. Eh?

"The beaver which has come to represent Canada as the eagle does the United States and the lion Britain, is a flat tailed, slow witted, toothy rodent known to bite off it's own testicles or to stand under it's own falling trees." - June Callwood, Canadian journalist & author.
