AOC Defends Her Vote Against GOP Resolution by Going Scorched Earth: ‘We Should Be Clear About Who Charlie Kirk Was’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to the House floor Friday to explain why she voted “No” on the GOP-backed resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk and condemning political violence....

The vote was 310-58, with 95 Democrats supporting the resolution brought forward by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

AOC explained that “condemning the depravity of Kirk’s brutal murder is a straightforward matter…We can disagree with Charlie and come together as a country to denounce the horror of killing. That is a bedrock American value.”

She declared House Republicans “reckless” for bringing forth a bill she said was meant to further “divide” Americans at such a delicate time in the country’s history. The resolution “brings great pain to the millions of Americans who endured segregation, Jim Crow, and the legacy of that bigotry today,” AOC said.

She continued:

We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was: a man who believed that the Civil Rights Act that granted Black Americans the right to vote was a ‘mistake,’ who after the violent attack on Paul Pelosi claimed that ‘some amazing patriot out there’ should bail out his assailant, and accused Jews of controlling ‘not just the colleges – it’s the nonprofits, it’s the movies, it’s Hollywood, it’s all of it.’ His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans – far from ‘working tirelessly to promote unity’ as asserted by the majority in this resolution…

AOC ended her remarks with condolences for Kirk’s family and loved ones.

“I’m thinking especially of his children and his wife, whose grief cannot be measured,” She said.

Right on. The murder was wrong, but hateful bigot Charlie merited no congressional honors.
