His purpose was to reinforce premium standards and put the top leaders on notice. Was it a little overt the top? Probably, but sometimes that is necessary to get peoples' attention. It will be met with differing opinions.
TV news, online media, everybody including (and maybe leading) Faux loves to report on crime, violence, and disruption. "If it bleeds, it leads" has long been the theme. If there was "war" or a severe crime issue in any of these places it would be discussed ad infinitum all over. Yet one fool, known to lie and exaggerate and totally make up stuff says there's an "internal war" there and the cultists' strings twitch and they're all like "oh yes oh yes there's war in the cities". Idiots.

Another meeting that could have been an email. What a waste of tax payer dollars.
Hegseth cosplays as a tough guy and never shuts the fuck up about the "warrior ethos". He also had a makeup studio installed in the Pentagon. He's just another fraud with no inner substance and instead peacocks around playing the character of a tough guy. Powder Room Pete. Yass queen
Firings are solitary and quiet, done by an HR flunky in a windowless office with 2 husky security guards present, not with hundreds of the angry, powerful fired all in one place. Too much danger in that.
Martial Law? War on Mexico, Venezuela and Central America?
Been to NYC, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Seattle within the last five years. Places that this old lying sack of shit is saying are "war zones"
They were perfectly safe. Even went outside of the tourist areas. No problems. Are my own eyes lying to me?
Do these people even leave the counties they live in or are they that terrified of the world?
Fasten your seat belts, the whole point is to provoke the public into provoking the military. Gov Pritzker, keep talking about nonviolent resistance, then go join the people in the streets. I've dreamed of having someone like you anchor a blockade.
Lament the murder, not the murdered.

Time will tell the final impact. It will be interesting to see how many retirements we see. Unfortunately, most will not be reported.
Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't read any evidence of severe deficiency in US military competence/preparedness. It's always easy to find examples of apparent waste and people can always have opinions on priorities, but most of the big problems seem to originate from the top. But if there were, they aren't going to get fixed by undermining and belittling the people. And they won't be fixed by a guy who focuses on trivia and theatrics, including putting up a "Patton flag" and strutting around in front of it. Surprising he didn't wear a helmet. A leader might say "we're going to improve physical fitness throughout the military" but he's not going to say "no fat soldiers." He might say "we're going to assure recognition of excellent performance and promote and assign the most capable" but he's not going to imply that no women or Black people deserved the jobs they hold without "DEI" preference. I'm pretty sure next step will be kicking some little country's ass trying to defend itself with single shot rifles and spears. If you never heard a bully before, play their soliloquies again.
It's the same as wannabe Kennedy is doing: pretending to know more than the professionals who do this stuff for a living, making ridiculous unfounded pronouncements, and spouting stuff that doesn't work.
I believe the current situation was not intended, but an evolution of lack of emphasis on the military. Hegseth was in the field in combat and his actions are based on what he observed. There can be a debates as to whether he is on target or not.
"...what he observed..." as a low-to-mid level officer in fairly limited circumstances in mostly reserve capacities is hardly a basis for thinking you know much about the greater military overall. Had he been in a different branch, a different place, a different unit, or maybe even had different local command chain "what he observed" would likely have been quite different also.

If I were an Iraq or Afghanistan vet I would be angered and insulted by Jagoff and TACO denigrating the military. Nothing seems to disappoint MAGA, though.
