So nevermind if it's reasonable to teach a five (or four) year old "gun safety" and let him have his own real firearm. They obviously did NOT teach him to check to see if it's loaded, and to not point it at anything he didn't intend to shoot. They also didn't supervise his use of the gun (check after use to see it's unloaded), didn't keep it up in a reasonably safe place (in the corner!? Seriously?) What's more, the mom wasn't there when he shot his sister. How does she know it was an "accident"? And the coroner's attitude is "crazy accident" Un-fucking-believable. Leave anything at all in the whole world out for a 5-year old to kill his sister with and you've lost custody of the 5 year old and charged with child endangerment at the very minimum. But it's a gun, so it's a "crazy accident."

Crickett makes rifles for kids. According to their website, "The goal of KSA is to instill gun safety in the minds of youth shooters and encourage them to gain the knowledge and respect that hunting and shooting activities require and deserve." Opps.

But the rifles seem to all be single-shot, manual cocking .22 short, long, or long rifle. So for the kid to shoot his sister, he would have had to retrieve the rifle from "the corner" where it was "stored", cock it, aim it at her, and pull the trigger. This firearm is not going to go off by itself. The parents were negligent in not keeping the rifle stored safely when not in use, in not checking to see that it was unloaded while being stored, in not teaching the kid not to touch the rifle without and adult around and not to point it at anyone. And that's even if you think a 5-year old has any business with a .22 in the first place. What - they couldn't have bought him a bb gun first? Or maybe that's what he had when he was a little kid.

It sucks for the girl, the family, and probably the boy for the rest of his life, but could this be Darwinism in action given the Mom's poor choices?

I keep asking the same question and never getting an answer ...exactly whom do they think they'll shoot at with their AR-15 Newtown rifles? And do they not expect those people to shoot back? Will they shoot a bunch of politicians? Cops? US Military? Union teachers? Other than their outrageous scenario of some force going door to door to "take away our guns" there's not much of an opportunity to shoot anybody without becoming just another criminally berzerk homegrown terrorist. And those guys successes as a long term strategy haven't been very stellar.

Of course, there is some precedent for their expectations of success...

Simply put, the days of the Great North Hollywood Shootout are over; the cops learned to keep an arsenal equal to or greater than that of their expected opposition. This notion that some self-styled redneck "militia" can effectively offer anything more than annoyed target practice to law enforcement and the real military is laughable.
Sometimes I wish this idiot rabble would go for it- break out the camo and 4WDs and go unleash some "2nd Amendment remedies," so we could clean out the sub-sentient wingnut trash and be done with it.

Yeah, part of the problem is the lack of ability to hide in the event you escape. Back in the day you could take a swipe at the establishment and run off to hole up in the hole in the wall or somewhere. And maybe the local sheriff didn't have the manpower to run you out and the military didn't find you worth the effort. Hiding a "militia" is a bit more difficult now. I think LaPierre and this new yayhoo the NRA has for a president ought to put their money where their mouth is and go challenge them some SWATs. I'm sure the SWAT members would enjoy the practice.

I have no fear of these fucksticks- but some of them are in-laws and I'm trying to keep the peace at home. It's hard to go to family gatherings back in the sticks when you are one of less than a half dozen progressives, in a crowd that is over 50 at Thanksgiving. They love to talk religion and politics and I have to either steer the blather back to Auburn/Alabama issues or just walk away from all conversation.

I don't find that guy particularly offensive or nutty. I'd probably enjoy meeting him. It's a more understandable hobby than collecting stamps or shooting Bambi. The idiot organizing the armed march on DC - ummm, not so much.
