The frozen lake pics remind me of a trip I made to Racine in the winter. The hotel I was staying at was right at the harbor and I decided to take a little walk around the area. Shoulda suspected something when I saw hardly anybody else had ventured out. Anyway, there were some guys out ice fishing so I went out to say hello. I'd never been ice fishing but I thought hanging out with them might count - at least for story telling purposes. They asked where I was from and when I told them Florida they had a bit of fun at my expense. Anyway, I asked did they catch many fish there in the harbor - they said, "naa, but it doesn't matter. We're just getting away from the wives and this is the closest spot to a bar." Had the opportunity later to go out for real with my Potawatomi clients, but I saw no reason to spend an afternoon freezing my ass off on a place called "Mosquito Lake."

Not on the lake shore, but sometimes the harbors will freeze but there's still moving water under the ice. I'm not going out there regardless. No ice fishing on Lake Michigan.

Seem to recall a story a couple of years ago a guy wandered off on the ice in Chicago and got stuck out there. Had to be rescued.

I've got about three or four inches of snow and it's snowing pretty good now and since I got up. And it's damn cold, too.

Yeah, I've not seen one car go by all day. Not even the mailman. But so far to fossil fuels are still working so I guess I support them. But I don't really know whether our local power is hydroelectric or from the burning of natural gas or coal or oil. At the outset, TVA was pretty much all hydroelectric projects; something like 42 dams were built all over the south during its initial founding.

Don't get me started on the TVA. Seems a lot of folks in TN would welcome a private power company to replace TVA.

Could very well be nuclear, too, Watts Bar, etc. It's tricky naming power sources in a region as crowded as ours, though. If you are served by nukes it just means that others nearby consume hydro or coal power and vice versa.

4 or 5 inches, but I'm not denying SoupySale's nearby 7 inches (I am still discussing snow ). No big deal by many people's standards, but equal to our total for the last 10 years or so. Sure is pretty.

No idea who gets the money....the power bill goes to an outfit called APC which I think is based in Ohio. But all during the time I grew up here the power bill came from Kingsport Power Company. It's main building downtown is now my bank. Kingsport Power Company no longer exists.

I've never checked into it. Not even during times when it goes out. Luckily it hasn't gone out during this cold spell. I'd hate to have to chase down some atoms and be forced to stomp or smash them into neutrons just to get warm. I've always thought it strange that "nuclear power" is really steam power, just like how most early machines were powered. The only difference is how the steam is made.
