Still the GOAT:
Tom Brady wins inaugural Fanatics Games, $1M prize

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady emerged Sunday as the winner of the inaugural Fanatics Games, which pitted athletes and celebrities against fans in eight competitions this weekend at Fanatics Fest in New York.

Brady finished atop the 100-person leaderboard with 399.1 points, taking home the $1 million prize. Brady, the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback who is currently a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and an NFL broadcaster for Fox Sports, said he will give $5,000 to each of the 50 fans who competed in the event and donate the rest to charity.
 Very GOAT-like. My first thought on seeing the headline was, " Like he needs more money."
UFC fighter Justin Gaethje finished second with 345.5 points to win a Ferrari 812 GTS.
Where does all this prize money come from?
A fan -- 39-year-old Pennsylvania teacher Matt Dennish -- finished third with 326 points to win a 2003-04 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor LeBron James rookie card, numbered to 50 and graded a 9.5 by Beckett Grading Services. Dennish later sold the card to Brady for $250,000 and a signed card and jersey from the future Pro Football Hall of Famer, according to cllct.com.
Not bad.
The competitors took part in eight sports-themed skills competitions: quarterback skills, basketball shooting (around the world), soccer goal-scoring, baseball pitching accuracy, a washer-dryer hockey shooting challenge, a WWE Superstar entrance, a UFC striking challenge and a closest-to-the-pin golf challenge.

Six fans were among the top 10 finishers. LA Clippers star James Harden (fourth) and retired New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (fifth) were the only other athletes to finish in the top 10.
Guess I missed it.

Now, almost 7 years post-2nd "retirement", age 41:
Lindsey Vonn makes World Cup podium for a second day in a row

A day after her first World Cup victory in nearly eight years, Lindsey Vonn almost made it two in a row.

Vonn was second in the downhill at the World Cup in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Saturday, finishing 0.24 seconds behind Emma Aicher of Germany. It was the 140th podium of Vonn's career.

Vonn won the downhill Friday, her first World Cup victory since coming out of retirement last season. And she was briefly in position to make it two in two days, taking the lead from Italy's Sofia Goggia after her run.

But Vonn had gotten off-balance off a jump about halfway down the course, and her fight to save her run cost her precious time. Aicher, the next skier after Vonn, took advantage.

... Still, Vonn maintains the lead in the downhill standings and moved up to 11th in the overall standings....

Three riders -- Menno Huising, Lucas Stevenson and Alberto Dainese -- were forced to quit the race, and a kangaroo was injured.

Oh nooo!
Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn’s status for the Winter Olympics is uncertain. While competing in her final downhill event before the upcoming world competition, Vonn crashed on the course and had to be airlifted to a nearby facility for treatment. The skier lost control while attempting to land a jump during a World Cup downhill event, becoming tangled in the safety nets lining the course. When Vonn was able to get up, she was limping and favoring her left knee, using her poles to steady herself.
She says...
"I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams. This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics...but if there's one thing I know how to do, it's a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over. I will give more information when I have it. It's not over until it's over."
Still, doesn't sound good.

Kenya's Sawe breaks fabled 2-hour marathon barrier, shatters world record by 65 seconds in London
29-year-old clocks 1:59:30 in race for the ages

The fabled two-hour barrier for a marathon has been broken, officially, in an once-inconceivable achievement in sports.

Not by one runner, but two.

In a race for the ages, Sabastian Sawe of Kenya won the London Marathon in one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds on Sunday, shattering the previous men's world record by an astonishing 65 seconds.

"What comes today is not for me alone," the 29-year-old Sawe said, "but for all of us today in London."
:happy-cheerleaderkid: :-||
Just 11 seconds further back was Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, who — running in his first-ever marathon — also covered the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometre) course in under two hours.
"first-ever marathon"!!!
Completing the podium was Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo, who broke the previous world-record time — set by Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum in Chicago in 2023 — by seven seconds, finishing in 2:00:28.
Killer field.
... "The goalposts have literally just moved for marathon running," Paula Radcliffe, a former winner of the London Marathon, said during commentary of the race for the BBC.

At the turn of the century, the world's best time for the men's marathon was 2:05:42, set by Khalid Khannouchi in Chicago in 1999....

Assefa wins fastest-ever women's-only marathon

A record was also set in the women's race, with Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa pulling away with about 500 meters remaining to win in 2:15:41 and defend the title in the fastest-ever time in a women's-only marathon.

... Kenya's Hellen Obiri was 12 seconds back in second place in a personal-best time on her London debut and compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei was third, a further two seconds adrift. It was the first time three women have run under two hours, 16 minutes in a marathon.
Another killer field. :-|| :-|| :-||
... In the wheelchair races, there was a Swiss double with Marcel Hug powering to a sixth straight men's title — and eighth in total — and Catherine Debrunner beating Tatyana McFadden in a close finish to defend the title.

No, nor should they have.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thorp ... nnsylvania
... Meanwhile, Thorpe's third wife, unbeknownst to the rest of his family, took Thorpe's body (from OK) and had it shipped to Pennsylvania when she heard that the small Pennsylvania towns of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk were seeking to attract business. She made a deal with officials which, according to Thorpe's son Jack, was made by the widowed Patricia for monetary considerations. This deal was made in May 1954, a year after Thorpe had died. The towns "bought" Thorpe's remains, which were interred there in 1957, erected a monument to him at the grave, merged, and renamed the newly united town in his honor as Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Thorpe had never been there. The monument site contains his tomb, two statues of him in athletic poses, and historical markers recounting his life story.
The widow is just a greedhead, lots of them in the world. However, 2 entire towns deciding that this was ethical, honorable and good was sick. I will never visit. Did you?

Legal battles ensued until
... On October 5, 2015, the United States Supreme Court refused to hear the matter, effectively ending the legal process.
