Iran War

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I asked ChatGPT how the war ends.

Guess it's not smarter than anyone but trumpaloons.

No one can reliably predict how a war ends while it’s still happening, but based on history, military capabilities, and what analysts are saying right now, there are four realistic endgame scenarios for the current 2026 Iran war.
Most Likely Endings (Ranked)
1️⃣ “Declare Victory and Stop” (Most likely)
What happens
The U.S. and Israel finish destroying key Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure.
Iran continues limited retaliation for a while.
After a few weeks, the U.S. announces its objectives were achieved and stops major strikes.
Why this is likely
U.S. officials say Iran’s missile and drone capability has already dropped sharply.
New York Post
Analysts expect the campaign to last weeks rather than months if targets are exhausted.
S&P Global
Historical pattern This is how many U.S. limited wars end:
Operation Desert Fox (1998)
Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya (2011)
Result
Iran weakened but regime survives
No occupation
Ongoing hostility and proxy conflict
Probability estimate: ~50–60%
2️⃣ Negotiated Ceasefire
What happens
Backchannel diplomacy (often via Oman, Qatar, or Europe).
Iran stops attacks on U.S. bases and shipping.
U.S. halts airstrikes.
Trigger
Oil prices spike or the Strait of Hormuz crisis gets too dangerous.
Global pressure increases.
Energy markets are already being disrupted, with oil flows through the strait sharply reduced.
Financial Times
Result
Similar to the end of the Iran–Iraq War: both sides claim victory.
Probability: ~25–30%
3️⃣ Iranian Regime Crisis or Collapse
What happens
Continued strikes weaken the government.
Economic collapse + protests lead to leadership change.
This would be the largest geopolitical shift in the Middle East since the:
1979 Iranian Revolution
Why it’s possible
Iran already faced large protests before the war.
Wikipedia
Why it’s unlikely
External attacks usually make populations rally around the government.
Probability: ~10–15%
4️⃣ Regional War (Worst case)
What happens The war expands to:
Hezbollah
Gulf states
U.S. bases across the Middle East
Missile strikes have already hit U.S. facilities and allies in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.
Wikipedia +2
If escalation continues:
shipping through the Persian Gulf could stop
oil markets could spike globally
Probability: ~5–10%
My Bottom-Line Prediction
The most realistic outcome:
➡️ Short air war → U.S. declares objectives achieved → conflict cools but doesn’t truly end.
That would mean:
Iranian military heavily damaged
regime survives
proxy attacks and sanctions continue for years
In other words, not a decisive victory — more like a temporary pause in a long confrontation.
✅ If you want, I can also explain the 3 signs that will tell you within the next 10 days how this war will end. Those signals are already starting to appear.

You’re broadly correct that the Strait of Hormuz is currently effectively shut down, but it’s important to understand how it’s closed, because that affects how the war might end.
The Guardian
Bloomberg
Al Jazeera
Reuters
What is the strait of Hormuz and can the US stop Iran from blocking it?
How the Iran War Is Disrupting the Strait of Hormuz
Not ‘a litre of oil’ to pass Strait of Hormuz, expect $200 price tag: Iran
Turkish-owned ship allowed to pass through Strait of Hormuz, minister says
Today
Yesterday
March 11
Today
What’s actually happening
Maritime traffic through the strait has almost completely stopped since the war began.
Bloomberg
Iran has attacked ships and threatened others, leaving over 1,000 cargo vessels blocked or waiting.
The Guardian
Tanker traffic dropped to near zero and many shipping companies suspended operations.
Wikipedia
Iran is selectively allowing a few ships to pass (for example, some Indian or Turkish vessels), which means the strait isn’t legally closed but is effectively unusable for most shipping.
Reuters +1
In other words:
It’s a de-facto blockade, not a formal closure.
What this means for how the war ends
If Hormuz stays blocked, the war usually moves toward one of two outcomes:
1️⃣ The U.S. reopens the strait by force
Historically this is the most common response.
The United States Navy would likely:
Sweep naval mines
Destroy Iranian missile batteries
Sink IRGC fast-attack boats
Escort tankers through the passage
This is similar to Operation Praying Mantis, when the U.S. destroyed much of Iran’s navy in one day.
If this happens:
Hormuz probably reopens within weeks
Iran loses much of its naval capability
The war de-escalates afterward
Probability (given current events): ~50%
2️⃣ Global pressure forces a ceasefire
Because about 20% of the world’s oil supply normally moves through the strait, a prolonged blockade triggers massive pressure from countries like:
China
India
European Union
Strategic reserves are already being released to stabilize energy markets.
Al Jazeera
In this scenario:
Iran allows shipping again
The U.S. pauses strikes
Everyone claims victory
Probability: ~35%
The key question now
The biggest indicator of how this war ends is:
Does the U.S. decide to physically clear the strait?
Once the U.S. begins:
mine-clearing operations
escorted tanker convoys
large naval strikes
…the conflict usually reaches its decisive phase within 7–14 days.
✅ My updated prediction (given Hormuz disruption):
50% — U.S. naval campaign reopens the strait
35% — negotiated reopening through diplomacy
10% — wider regional war
5% — prolonged blockade lasting months
If you want, I can also explain why closing Hormuz is actually a very dangerous move for Iran strategically—it tends to trigger the one scenario Tehran most wants to avoid.

ChatGPT, how does Donald Trump die and when?
As of my last knowledge update in October 2023, there is no public information regarding the death of Donald Trump. Speculating about someone's death is inappropriate and can be distressing. It’s important to focus on constructive dialogue and respect for individuals. If you have questions about his policies, political career, or any other constructive topic, feel free to ask!

This is how I think it will end. Iran will devolve into about a dozen or so different militant factions, almost all of them radical anti Israel groups. It'll be worse than what we spawned in Iraq. Eventually, one of these factions will prevail over the others but internal sectarian strife will be ongoing for decades. Partisans for all factions will come from the wider area to support their favored faction. As Charlie would say; prove me wrong.

Iran has been totally and completely defeated. Except apparently they haven't been totally and completely defeated, so send warships, everyone.
The Fake News Media hates to report how well the United States Military has done against Iran, which is totally defeated and wants a deal - But not a deal that I would accept! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrum ... 2010036899
Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe. We have already destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability, but it’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile somewhere along, or in, this Waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are. Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a Nation that has been totally decapitated. In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian Boats and Ships out of the water. One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE! President DONALD J. TRUMP https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrum ... 4143399817

More:
'Not NATO's war': Berlin rejects US call to protect Strait of Hormuz

... "This war has nothing to do with NATO. It is not NATO's war," government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said in Berlin, as many of Washington's Western allies suggest that the US and Israel have no one but themselves to blame for the turmoil on global oil markets triggered by their war on Iran.

Trump, who has repeatedly asked allied nations to support a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz, on Sunday ramped up his rhetoric towards NATO, suggesting that the alliance might face a "very bad future" if allies don't help ensure safe passage for commercial shipping through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.
Does it defy belief to wonder if DonOLD crafted this situation in order to withdraw from NATO while blaming others? Is he capable of being this sinister and Machiavellian?
... German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also rejected NATO involvement in the Strait of Hormuz, making the same argument.

"This is not our war; we did not start it," he said during a meeting with his Latvian counterpart Andris Sprūds in Berlin.

"We want diplomatic solutions and a swift end to the conflict, but sending more warships to the region is unlikely to help." ...
Duh.

Countries Reject Trump’s Strait Demand, Saying ‘We Did Not Start War’

Luxembourg - No
... British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Monday the United Kingdom was working with allies on a plan to reopen the strait but would not be drawn into a wider war. Starmer also said there was the possibility of using mine-hunting drones that the U.K. has in the region, but the country is unlikely to dispatch a warship.
Opps.
... Ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Brussels was weighing two types of naval missions to help reopen the strait.

She said that Brussels EU could expand its Aspides naval mission to protect shipping in the Red Sea up into the Persian Gulf or form a "coalition of the willing" with countries contributing military capacity.

Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Rome backs reinforcing EU naval missions in the Red Sea but: "I don’t think these missions can be expanded to include the Strait of Hormuz, especially since they are anti-piracy and defensive missions."

Among non-NATO members, China dismissed Trump's appeal for countries with capable navies to deploy warships.

China, a key diplomatic partner of Iran and the buyer of most of its crude oil, has repeatedly condemned the U.S.-Israeli offensive, which has killed more than 1,400 people in Iran, local officials say.

"We once again call on all sides to immediately cease military actions, avoid tensions from further spiraling and escalation, and prevent regional turbulence from having a large impact on global economic growth," Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday when asked about Trump's appeal.

Catherine King, a member of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Cabinet, said that for Canberra, sending ships to ‌assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz was "not something that we've been asked or that we're contributing to."

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also said Tokyo did not currently plan to dispatch naval vessels to escort ships in the Middle East but added that "we are continuing to examine what Japan can do independently and what can be done within the legal framework."
:---P :---P :---P :---P :---P

The Shrubbery did far better than that and Obama joined a coalition, including local support, to attack Libya and depose Gaddafi.

We broke it, we own it.

The United States has been informed by most of our NATO "Allies" that they don't want to get involved with our Military Operation against the Terrorist Regime of Iran, in the Middle East, this, despite the fact that almost every Country strongly agreed with what we are doing, and that Iran cannot, in any way, shape, or form, be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon. I am not surprised by their action, however, because I always considered NATO, where we spend Hundreds of Billions of Dollars per year protecting these same Countries, to be a one way street — We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, in particular, in a time of need. Fortunately, we have decimated Iran's Military — Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti-Aircraft and Radar is gone and perhaps, most importantly, their Leaders, at virtually every level, are gone, never to threaten us, our Middle Eastern Allies, or the World, again! Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer "need," or desire, the NATO Countries' assistance — WE NEVER DID! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the World, WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE! Thank you for your attention to this matter. I can understand Trump being disappointed with European countries not rushing to join the action in Iran. However, he should not be surprised and no need to make a public issue of it. The EU leaders have a constituency that does not understand the threat Iran was,
