The proposed site is Memorial Circle, a traffic roundabout on the man-made Columbia Island, for his planned 250-foot arch. Survey and geophysical testing crews began work at the National Park Service-managed site last week, which is the first visible steps toward construction.

Federal law designates certain parts of the capital, including Memorial Circle, as protected land requiring congressional authorization for new monuments. Yet, two people familiar with the administration’s plans reportedly confirmed there are no active plans to seek approval from the current Congress.

Instead, Donald Trump’s administration is anchoring its legal argument in a 1924 report by the Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission. That report proposed two 166-foot-tall columns topped with statues on Columbia Island, framing the Lincoln Memorial. Congress ratified the commission’s design in 1925. The bridge was built, but the columns never materialized. Trump officials now contend the 250-foot arch merely fulfills that past vision.

I thought I'd post this list of trump's lies in just one week since I came across this story earlier. I post this link mainly for supes since I figure he's heard all these lies but I figure he's not been shown why they're lies. I have this silly notion that one day maybe not long from now supes will be struck with the kind of clarity a jolt of chain lightning blasting an old wooden gazebo into blackened splinters affords.

Speaking of parks - I don't know whose bright idea it was to eliminate the functional park reservation system for major popular places like Yosemite, but I'm pretty sure Tru*p's hand was on it somewhere. Anyway, all the big parks are now pretty chaotic, with people waiting hours to get in, circling for parking then parking illegally all over, trash not getting removed (or rubbish either, bada boom). When we were at Mammoth, the east Yosemite entry (Tioga Road) was still closed, but without major announcement, it opened somewhat unexpectedly on the Friday we were there. We were able to get in not long after the gate opened, tootled into the park and didn't have to go far before seeing a bunch of cars that had entered the other side. By the time we left a couple or so hours later, the entrance where we came in was backed up what looked like a half mile.

Many countries have some version of national parks or protected land. I don't know of any that treat theirs as poorly as the US.
