The bots.... and bots and bots and bots

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Thanks, I was on late last night and afternoon testing some blocking techniques, I'm guessing that I was actually the root cause this time.

Lemmo know if continues though.
Running kinda slow for me this evening.

To a certain extent they can be, but I've not run across a case where that is true yet.

Every country you can think of.... Mexico, Spain, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, varies places in Africa. Apparently even the U.S. based version of Alibaba (someone's probably leasing servers to do it from them) Those are the ones that stand out the most in my mind. Some of them are residential connections which probably means someone's PC has became infected and someone's using it on their behalf. When it happens it seems to be coordinated from that set of diverse countries. There's always someone knocking at the door, just not in that quantity in that kind of coordination.

I have only guesses, but some of them just look like they're scraping information much like AI bots do, others are definitely trying to register accounts and post spam.

Went over the logs briefly for today, lots of traffic from anthropic -- so AI bot. Adjusted some settings to tell it to crawl us slower, and also reduced the number of connections required before an immediate 10 second ban.

We'll dial in something eventually.

* If you get a big ugly "Error 403" lemme know that's real time blocking. If you wait 10, 20 seconds, it will clear up on it's on, but means I've set it too senstive. I test my normal browsing and try to make sure normally loading and browsing the site doesn't trigger it, but it's always possible I didn't hit the perfect conditions.

For the past three of rour days I've had to click the "login" button twice; the first time I hit it, it goes to the regular home page. Then I go up top and hit "login" again and am in. Kind of weird; never happened before a few days ago. Other than that, response time is normal. And this isn't a complaint; just a comment.

FWIW.,

When I click on last posts or load recent posts it directs me to the top of the page and takes about 5 seconds to go to the current post.

You talking about in the quick links section at the top? If not, you may be using a feature I've not even noticed before.

Often the same here, a relatively new thing. Yes, top of the page - back one page or reload page, or following a link to a page and posting a reply. Essentially, can happen with any navigation to a page. FYI only, not a big deal to me.

No, when I log on I use new posts.

https://blueridgedebate.com/search.php? ... d=newposts --- Edited to remove session link --B

If I click on a current post in the new posts it takes me to top of it's page, hesitates and then scrolls down to the new post as opposed to going directly to the new post which it used to do.
(That's a run-on sentence.)

Same thing when I submit a new post.

I get that, too. It now goes to the top of the page and then a few seconds later will go down to the last post in the thread. At this point, anything that isn't working normally I cast the blame on trump. He's fucked up everything else.

Ok, I think I know what you guys are talking about.

This may be because some stuff I did to anger the bots. Basically I burst data to get the page to load mostly, then slow it down after so much data. Makes bots keep the connection open longer and wastes their resources.
I've disabled this just to see if it now feels better for you. Let me know and I can turn it back on an adjust. At least in my head this tracks perfectly because it takes longer for the last post to load especially if it's a long page, and therefore even more delay. When there's no delay you guys probably never noticed at all.

A secondary issue i noticed is that when clicking lose links it actually takes you from www.blueridgedebate to just blueridgedebate.com, I don't think that can cause an issue but it's also not expected. Not gonna have time to fix that for while.
