2026 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Xavier Becerra will be the first Latino Gov of CA since 1875.
A new day in the Golden State!

Yeah but there's already been some Brown governors, plus one Governor, one Bedtime for Bonzo star, and one Linda Ronstadt boyfriend. Probably more diversity than most states, I'd say.

"plus one Governor" - Did you mean Governator?

"56% of votes counted", same as last night :wtf: There's something to be said for DonOLD's mocking of the CA election process.

And he's started up again with his rigged election bullshit.....expect to see an increasing volume of this nonsense over the next few months. trump will lie multiple times a day that one election in one state was rigged, then another election in another state was rigged, then he tries to declare an emergency that doesn't exist in order to fiddle with all the November elections. You can bet your ass this will happen.

Yes, "Governator"

I agree the counting process has a lot of room for improvement. I'm not sure if they count a ballot when it arrives or wait until election day to start. But if they've identified a reason it takes so long, it would surely be possible to fix it.

Still "56% of results in" :angry-banghead:
If Xavier Becerra (Dem) overtakes Steve Hilton (GOP) expect some howling.
If somehow Becerra AND Tom Steyer (Dem) overtake Hilton expect civil war.

Well for fans of "hand counting", California can be a model. The ballots aren't really counted by hand, but there is a good bit of manual processing before the count. They make sure the bar code on the ballot matches the envelope, and that the signature on the envelop matches the registrant.

But even though the remaining ballots are thought to lean Dem, it's not likely to boost Steyer. Looks like he's blown $250 mill on zip nada zilch. I wonder, isn't there ANYTHING in California that could have used that money better than TV ads? Surely something?

Xavier Becerra advances in California’s hotly contested governor’s race

:happy-cheerleaderkid:

68% of results in
Xavier Becerra (Dem) 26.8% 1,721,926
Steve Hilton (GOP) 26.3% 1,694,477
Tom Steyer (Dem) 21.1% 1,354,921

Steyer has gained some ground on Hilton, probably not enough.

Here we go
How a simple mix-up fueled false conspiracies about L.A. vote count

... "They're not even trying to hide the fraud anymore," wrote Elon Musk, the world's richest man and onetime member of Trump's inner circle.

The claim fit into the broader narrative being pushed relentlessly by Trump and other Republicans in recent days, that California Democrats were cheating....

I don't know if some election officials somewhere are trying to cheat - they probably are. But to claim that a party with 2 for 1 voter registration (52% - 19% in LA) has to cheat to defeat repugs is ludicrous. That's like saying the Dodgers couldn't beat the local community college team without cheating.

I really hope the remaining repug finishes second. Months of two Dems trashing each other couldn't be helpful to anybody.
You're getting your wish so far.
California Governor
46% of results in
Steve Hilton (GOP) 26.7% 1,076,577
Xavier Becerra (Dem) 25.9% 1,044,984
Tom Steyer (Dem) 19.7% 795,916
Now:
72% of results in
Xavier Becerra (Dem) 27.2% 1,883,083 (will advance  )
Steve Hilton (GOP) 25.9% 1,790,532
Tom Steyer (Dem) 21.5% 1,488,965

Nithya Raman 20.0% 71,470

Sheesh. She's going to go to a runoff with an idiot.

Is the magic gone? DonOLD-backed Randy Feenstra has conceded. I'm not sure why.
Iowa Governor, Republican primary
99% of results in
Zach Lahn 37.8% 80,504
Randy Feenstra 37.0% 78,737
:headscratch:
Nithya Raman surges past Spencer Pratt in L.A. mayor's race, closing in on runoff with Karen Bass

Raman now sits in second place with Pratt in third, according to the latest vote count from the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder. Raman had 27.1% of the votes counted so far, and Pratt had 26.7%.

Both are vying to compete in a Nov. 3 runoff against Mayor Karen Bass, who garnered 34.7% of the vote as of Sunday, and whom the Associated Press already determined has qualified for the runoff.

"The odds have shifted dramatically in Raman's favor," said Zev Yaroslavsky, a former council member who runs the Los Angeles Initiative at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. "The trend is clear. She has been gaining on Pratt for the last three or four days. There's no reason to believe that will change. It is still close, but she is at this point more likely to be in the runoff than Pratt is."
:happy-cheerleaderkid:
... Mail-in ballots with a June 2 election day postmark will continue to be accepted by county election officials through Tuesday. Election officials estimated there are still about 368,000 ballots left to process countywide. The city of Los Angeles makes up roughly 40% of the county's population.

... Analysts say Pratt, a registered Republican, likely appealed to conservative voters, many of whom were expected to have cast their votes early. Raman, by comparison, is a progressive democratic socialist. Analysts say younger, progressive voters tend to hold onto their ballots longer than conservatives.

What's more, many Democrats were believed to have held onto their mail-in ballots until the eleventh hour as they waited to choose between Democratic gubernatorial candidates.

Pratt, who came to fame as the villain on MTV's reality show "The Hills," turned the mayor's race into a national story, becoming a favorite of conservative media pundits on Fox News. President Trump, while not endorsing Pratt outright, offered words of support, saying he "heard he's a big MAGA person."
:violin:
... Should Raman make the runoff, she would probably pose a serious threat to Bass. Despite entering the race at the filing deadline, she had a strong presence on social media. Her years on the council have also given her a deep understanding of the issues facing the city.

In a head-to-head matchup, Raman would beat Bass 32% to 28%, according to a poll of registered voters conducted last month by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, which was co-sponsored by The Times. The poll said 25% would choose neither or wouldn't vote, and 15% were undecided.

During the four-month primary campaign, Raman offered withering critiques of Bass' first term, saying the mayor failed to act with urgency on homelessness, apartment construction, street repairs and the exodus of entertainment jobs from the region.

Raman assailed Bass' decision to negotiate an expensive package of raises with the city's police officers, saying the deal "bankrupted the city." And she opposed the $2.6-billion upgrade of the Convention Center, saying it would divert funds away from core city services....

Iowa Governor, Republican primary
99% of results in
Zach Lahn 38.0% 80,383
Randy Feenstra (MAGA, conceded) 37.2% 78,741

I don't really care. As far as I know, Bass was doing a decent job and was pretty popular until the fires and she got trashed pretty badly for some of her handling of that. Some of that criticism (like tossing the fire chief under the fire truck) was earned, but a lot of it really wasn't. Pratt never had a chance from the first, though, so finishing third isn't really any different from finishing second - or even first for that matter.

It's funny, though, that the officials can say "vote counting will be slow because..." and "lots of Dems are voting later this election because of the governor race..." and then when exactly that happens the droolers start yelling "rigged!"
