Iran War

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

First backtrack didn't take long.
This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World! President DONALD J. TRUMP
https://x.com/trump_repost/status/2066287378361397388
TACO!

Help me out here, I have a typical American short memory. Wasn't oil flowing "on both ends again for the Region, and the World!" 7 weeks ago before Moron Don launched this War of Choice?
Indeed it was.

And no one has to give Iran 24 billion dollars as a down payment to transit.

Read the (alleged) 14 point draft US surrender document here

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ify%20wall
The United States undertakes, together with its regional partners, to create a comprehensive plan agreed upon by both parties for the rehabilitation and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran, While ensuring financing of at least $300 billion. The implementation mechanism of this plan, as part of the final agreement, will be formulated within 60 days.

...

The United States commits to ending, on a schedule to be agreed upon as part of the final agreement, all types of sanctions currently facing the Islamic Republic of Iran, including resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and all unilateral U.S. sanctions, both primary and secondary.

...

The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates that it will never produce nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States have agreed that the fate of enriched material and the fate of all other mutually agreed nuclear-related issues, including Iran’s nuclear needs, will be adequately addressed in a final agreement; the final agreement will confirm the provisions of this Article.

...

The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States agree that, pending a final agreement, they will maintain the status quo: Iran will maintain the status quo on its nuclear program, and the United States will not impose new sanctions on Iran or strengthen its forces in the region.

...

The United States undertakes that immediately after the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, and until the date of the lifting of sanctions, the United States Treasury Department will issue waivers for exports of Iranian crude oil, petrochemical products and their derivatives, and all related services, including banking, insurance, transportation, and the like.

...

The United States undertakes that, in light of the progress of negotiations towards a final agreement, frozen or restricted funds and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be released and made fully available. These funds, whether held in the master account or transferred, will be used for any final beneficiary payment determined by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran and will be fully available for use. The United States undertakes to issue all necessary permits and licenses on this basis.
The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States agree that an implementation mechanism will be established to oversee the successful implementation of and future commitment to the Final Agreement.
If this is actually real, and if it remains in its current form it's a pretty clear US loss.

Thanks, Whack9.

I'm not sure "We" pay anything. Some of the money is already Iran's and I think I heard that the Gulf states would raise the $300M. Still, this sounds better for Iran than the JCPOA, ntawwt. The one downside is that the mullahs get to spend it.

So even if the US isn't directly paying the 300 billion, and instead Gulf countries are, that still means the US and its allies lost the war. Otherwise no reparation would be paid.

We're not even returning to the status quo before the war if the Memorandum of US Surrender is accurate. The language in the document seems to indicate that the sanction relief will be even broader than under the JCPOA. We'll see.

Uhhhh, no.

It's all still very nebulous, but I'm not convinced a part may be promised from us.

If this thing comes together at all.

The "$300 billion promise" appears to come from a proposed economic reconstruction and investment package that is part of the recently announced U.S.-Iran framework agreement. The key point is that reports disagree on exactly how it would be funded. Some documents describe it as a "U.S.-led reconstruction plan," while U.S. officials have said it is not a direct payment from the U.S. government and would involve private-sector investment instead.
Axios +1
According to Reuters, the current plan is a $300 billion private investment fund called the Reconstruction and Development Fund. Reuters reported that it would be financed by private companies from the United States, Gulf states, Asia, South America, and Africa—not by American taxpayers. More than half of the proposed funding has reportedly already been committed.
Reuters
The reported sources of money are:
Private international investors and corporations.
Reuters
Potential future investment in Iran's energy, transportation, manufacturing, and logistics sectors.
Reuters
Separate provisions that could allow Iran to regain access to more than $100 billion in previously frozen assets and resume broader oil exports if sanctions are lifted. Those funds are distinct from the $300 billion investment fund.
The Times of India +1

Why the confusion? Critics often describe it as "$300 billion for Iran," which sounds like a U.S. government payment or reparations package. Reuters and other reports indicate the administration's position is that it is an investment vehicle, not a taxpayer-funded aid program, and that it was created after Iran's demand for direct war reparations was rejected.
Reuters +1
If you're asking whether any of the $300 billion would come directly from U.S. tax revenues, the reporting available so far says no, although details of the final agreement and the fund's governance are still being negotiated.
Reuters +1

As GoCubsGo quotes, the number I've heard most often cited for frozen Iranian assets is "more than $100 billion". Reports are that the amount to be immediately released is $24 billion. The "300 bill" is separate from this. One RepuQ equates it to implementing the Marshall Plan in Germany before Hitler was defeated.

Trump calls for impeachment of Senate Democrat who called ending Obama’s Iran deal ‘bad mistake’

President Trump on Sunday called for the impeachment of Democratic Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.), after the lawmaker criticized his decision to pull out of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in his first term.

... A sitting senator cannot be impeached but can be expelled through a resolution that requires a two-thirds majority vote.
What a dummy DonOLD is!
... "The president does not like to be questioned in any way, shape or form, which is bad for an executive," Reed told reporters Monday in response to Trump's post online, according to local news outlet WPRI....
