So even though I certainly liked it better when stadiums were named "Three Rivers" and "Candlestick Park", "Mile High" etc., it does seem that with the rise of sponsored names, that Lumen Field is, at least for the current contract the official legal name of the Seahawk's home field. Why is it they aren't using those names for the World Cup games? Surely it can't be that FIFA sees their product as non-commercial. And probably non-political? Right, that's the ticket.

And did the corporate name sponsors who paid millions for the naming rights get a vote here? ($625 million from SoFi - to be called "Los Angeles Stadium" during arguably one of the biggest events held there.)

More corruption?
 :o :P
FIFA does this because of its "clean stadium" rules: stadium names that contain corporate sponsors are temporarily replaced unless that sponsor is an official FIFA partner. The same policy has been used at previous World Cups and other major international tournaments

Cape Verde viral goalie Vozinha grows Instagram following by 10,000% after historic Spain result

On the biggest stage of his life, Vozinha delivered the performance of a lifetime.

Playing in goal for Cape Verde against powerhouse Spain, Vozinha made seven saves -- including a few excellent ones -- to preserve a historic 0-0 draw.

It was the first-ever World Cup match for Cape Verde, and not much was expected by the footballing world.

But thanks in large part to Vozinha, as well as tenacious defending in front of him, they held Spain scoreless.

The world was certainly watching, and now they're following along.

Vozinha began the day with 50,000 followers on Instagram.

He ended it with more than five million.
11 times the population of Cape Verde  and that's after one game.
... It didn't matter if anyone expected Cape Verde to contain Spain.

What matters is that Vozinha and his teammates actually did it.

Italy did not qualify after being beaten by Bosnia and Herzegovina, sorry. It's a new record of shame for a former champion....
Why Italy isn't in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after disaster qualifying

Italy has won the FIFA World Cup four times.

But if you've watched the last few editions of the tournament, you wouldn't know that. The Italian side hasn't even been taking part.

Italy missed the 2026 World Cup in North America. It's their third consecutive miss.

They weren't part of the 2022 tournament.

They weren't in the 2018 tourney, either.

It's been a disastrous run for the Italians.

Why isn't Italy in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Italy isn't in the 2026 FIFA World Cup because it didn't qualify.

That's a particular disaster given that this is the first year of the tourney's expansion from 32 teams to 48 -- it was easier to qualify than ever.

The final nail was put in Italy's coffin when, during the UEFA playoff final, Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Italy on penalty kicks....
I always hated that.

The price to watch the USMNT's Round of 32 match is already staggering

... Since the U.S. capitalized on their opportunity to win the group with a game left to play, it means that the date and venue for their upcoming Round of 32 game is already decided: July 1st in the Bay Area, playing at the home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.

... Per SeatGeek, the cheapest ticket for the USMNT in their first knockout round match is a little under $4,000 with the chance of it rising over the next week as anticipation continues to grow....
:puke-left:

$4,000 x Capacity 68,500 = $274,000,000. Revenues from vendors and worldwide TV get added to that. :o That's one game.

Interesting couple of headlines on the BBC's WC homepage:

The beauty of sharing the first World Cup with your child

Winger Jeremy Doku has been criticised for saying he wants to leave Belgium's World Cup camp to be with his wife when she gives birth to their first child.

Different situations, of course, and Doku's chief critic has now backed off, but the contrasting perspectives are striking to me.

GO Cape Verde > Uruguay (-1.5)
2-2, another mini upset   Cape Verde scores 1st ever WC goals. It's tied for 2nd in its group, with only weak Saudi Arabia remaining. It could even win the group if Uruguay beats or ties Spain.

I find it interesting (hypocritical) that FIFA has required American stadiums to take corporate sponsors off their names for the World Cup. There is no shortage of examples where the guys who run FIFA are corrupt. I guess they couldn't shake down these entities with their hands out.
