Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

The Iranians find a reason to call of negotiations. Trump should explain to them in the only language they understand.

So shocking.

Come inside Iran's World Cup hotel in Tijuana, Mexico, where fans turn out to cheer

... “I wanted to come down to support Iranian soccer, and cheer for them when they exited the building and make them happy,” says Lucas Zarrabi, 13. The teen, who attended Monday's 2-2 draw with New Zealand and has a ticket for Sunday's match against Belgium, is one of several fans from Los Angeles who made the drive to stay with the team. Others flew in from San Jose, California, and even Miami, turning up at the hotel not quite 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the border crossing.

Showing up is important, some said, because of what they describe as unfair conditions imposed on the team. After the outbreak of war, the Iranian team was forced to move its base camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana. Eleven team officials and staff members did not receive U.S. visas. The U.S. has also denied Iran’s requests to arrive two days before matches — and mandated that the team must leave immediately after the game.

“Every little technicality is making it difficult for the team,” says Abbas Eftekhari, who was born in Iran and has lived in the U.S. for more than 40 years. “I think this is going to drain them psychologically and also physically.”

Iran's soccer federation has been vocal about the obstacles, saying it would lodge a complaint with FIFA.

“Football shouldn’t lose its power to politics,” Hedayat Mombeini, secretary-general of the Iran Football Federation, said Friday. He added that the restrictions “are certainly having a negative effect on us, but we are trying to overcome these problems with our Iranian pride.”
:ateeth: USA USA USA cheats. Always has, always will.
... “I have been in America for 50 years — this has been the most emotional thing, to see the team that I have not seen in 50 years,” he said.
... Just over 24 hours until Sunday's noon kickoff, it's not just Iranian fans contributing to the atmosphere. A group of flight attendants from China staying at the hotel embrace the excitement, donning jester hats and waving scarves with red, white and green. And soccer fans from Tijuana are eager to show some local hospitality.
... Leonardo Ramirez Lopez, a 10-year-old soccer fanatic from Tijuana, clutches his autograph album in hopes he’ll get more signatures.

“It’s a new team that I don’t have experience with how they play,” he says. But Iran is already his third-favorite team, behind Colombia and Argentina.

After more than two hours of waiting, several dozen fans break into cheers as players finally file through the lobby. The squad smiles and waves, stopping for a few autographs. As each player leaves, he kisses a Quran, pressing his forehead against it before boarding the bus to Tijuana's airport.

“Iran, Iran! Whoop, whoop!” fans cry, breaking into song.
It's halftime vs Belgium right now, nil-nil.

Iran, Iran! Whoop, whoop!

Hopefully that would include, as any rational person would, some understanding of the adversary's culture and customs and a willingness to show (even fake) respect for them as a sovereign nation.

I've never negotiated an international peace treaty, but I've negotiated a bunch of labor contracts and mediated a bunch of disputes and IMNVHO there's not much that undercuts ones position much faster than blatantly disrespecting the other side. I had one instance where the client had two bargaining units - the "journeymen" and the "metal trades" group. the journeymen were the higher skilled, got paid more, got better benefits while the metal trades group was historically expected to go along for the scraps from the journeymen. Short version - the metal trades people went out on an extended strike largely over an insult tossed their way be a company executive. We had it settled, all done but the final vote and the asshole had to run his mouth.

I've just given keeping up with whether or not this war is on, off, delayed, cancelled, whatever. None of it makes any sense.

If only you were a betting man.
If only we were betting men. Remember how the War of Choice was going to inspire an uprising that would lead to regime change?
Iran sends a defiant message to Trump with colossal funeral for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Four months after he was killed at the outset of the US-Israeli war on Iran, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is being memorialized in a weeklong funeral spectacle stretching across five cities in two countries, with millions of mourners expected to attend.

... Authorities say they've launched one of the largest logistical efforts in the Islamic Republic's history, mobilizing government employees, universities, labor unions, firefighters, soldiers, aid workers and even religious "mourning groups" to organize the funeral and manage the millions of "pilgrims" expected to travel to cities and holy sites across Iran and Iraq to bid the ayatollah farewell. Authorities in neighboring Iraq, where Shiite Muslims are a majority, say millions of mourners are expected to pay respects.

... "The assassination has made Khamenei far more powerful symbolically in death than he was in life," Sina Toossi, a senior nonresident fellow at the Center of International Policy, told CNN. "Khamenei is now being framed as a martyred religious authority, akin to revered Shia saints who were martyred, whose worldview was vindicated by the manner of his death."

... "His religious following extended into Iraq, Pakistan, Bahrain and other Shia communities, which is why planned processions in Najaf and Karbala are so significant," said Toossi. "They deepen the sense that this is not just an Iranian state funeral, but a transnational moment." ...
The Kurds were smart to stay out of it.

You're doing a heckuva job, MAGA.
