If the attacks are illegal then the orders are illegal and obeying them is illegal.

I don't know much about it, but it seems if the commanding officers gave the orders in a context that could not be easily shown to be illegal (e.g., "there's evil DRUGS and human trafficers on them boats!) then maybe the rank and file wouldn't be liable for following them.

I don't think the rank and file ever is. Only the most sadistic Nazis, for example, and only Lt Calley, but the responsibility is placed on all shoulders and the caution from the 6 rebel congress members applied to the entire services.

From my understanding: A woman was arrested for being present a protest that involved someone else firing shots at an officer. While in jail she made a phone call to this dude to hide the zines, so that counts as conspiring to hide evidence. The 30 year sentence sounds incredibly steep, no?

From what I've been reading, sentences usually span from a few months to a few years for more serious obstruction of justice cases. 30 years is incredibly unusual.
