Camden? Seriously? My definition of "vibrant night life" doesn't include getting shot because the idiots laid off most of their police force.

Re: Arizona
I grew up in Union County, N.J. (GSP exit #136). I was a nice small town-suburban
area, likely not much different from other similar places throughout the country. The
only thing was there were no large areas of fields or forests, etc. It was just one town
running into the next.
I don't know if JTA was kidding about Camden or not. It is often is listed as the most
dangerous city in the country. I wouldn't go there at night unless heavily armed.

Glad you enjoyed Arizona. We got out there every December to visit our kids in Phoenix. We always take a trip to Sedona.
BTW, I'm from New Jersey originally. Morris Plains.

If only guns were legal there wouldn't be a need for a big police force, crime rates would plummet!O Really wrote:Camden? Seriously? My definition of "vibrant night life" doesn't include getting shot because the idiots laid off most of their police force.

So - you would know where Denville is - home town of my first serious girl friend and where I spent many summer days around Indian Lake.Dryer Vent wrote: BTW, I'm from New Jersey originally. Morris Plains.

I grew up in the Alabama part of the state - mostly fields and salt marshes interspersed by small chunks of woods. You guys ever have any problems with the Jersey devil up in those parts?Bungalow Bill wrote:I grew up in Union County, N.J. (GSP exit #136). I was a nice small town-suburban

You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

I had relatives who lived in Denville. At the time, there was a con man hiding out there who finally fled to the Caymens or someplace like that. Feds were after him. I can't remember his name.

Re: Arizona
Bama doesn't get any respect. I remember the old joke about Pennsylvania:
Philly at one end, Pittsburgh at the other and Alabama in between. I didn't
hear about the Jersey Devil until after I had moved from Jersey. As a kid
nobody ever mentioned it. I guess it was mostly a southern Jersey thing.
I'd bet that liberals are not as anti-gun obsessed as most people think.

That is largely a myth created by the NRA, who needs to have a boogeyman. You can't create and maintain a high state of paranoia without having an enemy image. They've managed to convince their collection of village idiots that even something as innocuous as background checks and trying to keep guns out of the hands of people known to be violent is the same as "they're gonna confiscate all our guns."Bungalow Bill wrote: I'd bet that liberals are not as anti-gun obsessed as most people think.

It was Robert Vesco. He lived in Denville, NJ, across the street from my in-laws. He vanished in the middle of the night, and the next day the FBI was at the door of my in-laws asking questions. He had fled to Cuba, if memory serves.Dryer Vent wrote:I had relatives who lived in Denville. At the time, there was a con man hiding out there who finally fled to the Caymens or someplace like that. Yep, the background checks that they were for a while back.
I haven't heard the name Robert Vesco in years. That was pretty big
news for a while. If I remember correctly he had some kind of connection
to Nixon too. Today, most people would stare and say Robert who?

Although Vesco donated to Richard Nixon's campaign, his dealings were with Donald Nixon, Richard M's. nephew.
"In the 1990s, Vesco became involved once again with Donald A. Nixon after Nixon went to Cuba seeking to partner with the government in conducting clinical trials on a substance he claimed to boost immunity, called trixolan or TX. Vesco introduced Nixon to Fidel Castro and his brother, Raúl Castro, and the Cuban government agreed to provide laboratory facilities and doctors to conduct the trials. Results from the studies were claimed to be positive, however on or about May 31, 1995, Vesco attempted to defraud Nixon and Raúl Castro, and Cuban authorities seized control of the project and arrested Vesco and his wife. Nixon was detained for questioning and was released thirty days later."
"Vesco reportedly died of lung cancer in November 2007 and was buried at Colon Cemetery in Havana."
A better name for his grave couldn't have suited him better.

Unless he died of colon cancer. I haven't thought about Vesco for years. One of those
"celebrities" who are big for a while and then just fade away. I vaguely remember Bernie
Cornfeld too, who got into some kind of fight with Vesco I think. Back then the financial
crooks were more flamboyant and were always taking off to another country, today they
just hang around Wall Street and hope no one notices.

Re: Arizona
It was weird about Vesco. He and his family lived across the street. They were friendly and even had BBQs for the neighbors and visited regularly with everyone in the vicinity. They didn't live lavishly at all. Then, one day they were gone...lock, stock, and barrel. Then the Feds started snooping around. We had stayed at that residence of my in-laws for a couple of weeks while our house was getting finished. I remember after we moved out, I got a call from an FBI agent asking me questions in particular about if I'd seen Vesco getting any large deliveries. Not sure what that was all about. They figured I might have seen something because I was home all day with a new baby.
