The European clubs pay the most, followed by South American clubs and some Middle East poaching. Other than superstars like Messi, North American clubs can't compete . . . yet. National teams play qualifiers mostly in the 2 years before the WC.

America isn't really the same place as it has been in the past - not in culture, moral and legal standards, "personality", expectations of leaders, and yada on. "Anti-American" is a reasonable point of view for actual patriots. Plus, it's a term left over from the McCarthy dark days and even that ended with a "Sir have you no shame". Now, it's clear that most do not have shame. And nevermind Trump personally - he's clearly an aberration. But when a well-known but garden variety personality like Megyn Kelly spouts racism on the air (or online) and everybody yawns, it's fershure not the America most of us loved. Not that there haven't always been racists, but up until the last 10 years or so, even if you were a racist you would've known it wasn't culturally acceptable to proudly broadcast it. Lots of racists started their comments with "I'm not racist but..." and then made racist statements. But the overall culture did not accept racism. Nor did it accept attempts to usurp the Constitution and tear down the government by the government leaders themselves. That we collectively now accept such things as normal pretty much proves we're not the "shining city on the hill" of Reagan's imagination. And what did Reagan see?
I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That's how I saw it, and see it still.

Thanks. Plus, overt racism is just one example. The ever-widening wealth gap, the international surveillance state, support for Israeli Apartheid and constant military interventions are others that transcend Moron Don.
