A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to restore an exhibit about slavery that was removed last month — and cited an infamous warning about totalitarianism in the process.

On Monday, Feb. 16, U.S. District Judge Cynthia M. Rufe granted a preliminary injunction in favor of the City of Philadelphia, regarding the federal government's alteration of The President’s House in Independence National Historical Park.

Judge Cynthia M. Rufe was appointed by Republican George W. Bush.

"As if the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell’s 1984 now existed, with its motto 'Ignorance is Strength,' this Court is now asked to determine whether the federal government has the power it claims—to dissemble and disassemble historical truths when it has some domain over historical facts. It does not," she wrote.

The judge also wrote that the removal of the displays was unlawful, "arbitrary and capricious," and caused "irreparable harm" by erasing historical truth and undermining public trust. She ordered that all panels and video exhibits be reinstalled and further alterations must come with "a mutual written agreement" with the City of Philadelphia.

... In a March 2025 executive order titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," Trump specifically targeted Independence National Historical Park.

Outrage as far-right agitator in brownface allowed to testify before lawmakers on immigration

A far-right agitator caused outrage by testifying before Idaho’s House Business Committee this week wearing an offensive brownface costume.

David Pettinger, 49, arrived to discuss a bill concerning unauthorized workers in the state and the prospect of introducing an E-Verify program while wearing brown makeup, sunglasses, a wig, a beard, and handcuffs dangling from his wrist.

Surprisingly, the panel’s acting chair, Republican Rep. Josh Wheeler, allowed Pettinger to deliver his testimony unchallenged, which he duly did, speaking in Spanish.

“El Jefe, amigos,” he said. “No hablo ingles.”

... The acting chair – who was in place because the committee’s usual chairman, Republican Rep. Jordan Redman, was presenting the bill under discussion – had broad authority to simply bar Pettinger from speaking by invoking House rules on decorum, but chose not to do so, the Statesman pointed out....

“No matter your politics, this is racist and absolutely unacceptable behavior from our elected officials,” the ACLU of Idaho wrote in a statement in response to his latest outrage.

“Our elected officials should be leading public forums with civility and respect, not hate.”

Also responding was PODER of Idaho, a social justice organization standing up for the state’s Latino and migrant communities, which said on Facebook: “Our legislature is supposed to be a place for serious policy discussion, not racist theatrics. This was hate speech, plain and simple.

Just the other day I was reading something about a woman who is still alive but lived through this thing in Tulsa when she was five years old. You have to salute someone like that.

Yeah, old Sitting Bull knew the score all right. He'd been seeing how the system worked for many years. But these days, the rich focus their efforts on tricking the poor low wits to vote for them even though every goddamn thing they stand for is against the best interests of those people. They have found that exploiting stupidity and lying to gullible voters is the way to win. They have been quite successful. A Horse’s Tail: How a Legendary Piece of a King George III Statue Landed at the New-York Historical Society

On the evening of July 9, 1776, downtown New York City was in a rebellious mood. The Declaration of Independence had been read aloud that day in lower Manhattan for the first time, announcing to the city that the Revolution against British rule had begun. That night, 40 colonial soldiers and sailors under the command of Capt. Oliver Brown crept into a dark alley near the park at Bowling Green. Their mission? To pull down a statue of King George III.

There’s no lack of priceless Revolutionary War artifacts on view in the New-York Historical Society. But perhaps none have the wild backstory of one of the signature pieces in our collection: the lead horse’s tail that was ripped from the statue that night. How it came to the Museum involves a century-long story about patriotic vandalism, metal recycling, and a detour to a Connecticut swamp.

But the patriots did more than think about it that night. They climbed the statue, tied ropes around it, and—after a one failed attempt—heaved it to the ground....

Wall quotes press reports in his 1920 Quarterly Bulletin: “The equestrian statue of King George III which tory pride and folly erected in 1770, was by the sons of freedom, laid prostrate in the dirt; the just desserts of an ungrateful tyrant!”

After the gold was removed, the broken statue was carted off to Litchfield, CT, where the 4,000 pounds of lead were supposed to be melted down into musket balls for the coming war. In all, over 40,000 balls were made, but some key segments went missing along the way: The head, for instance, was apparently returned to England, where it disappeared from record. As for other pieces, the legend goes that the cart’s drivers stopped in a tavern in Wilton, CT, and local loyalists took the opportunity to spirit some of the segments away—including the horse’s tail.

... The tale of the toppled statue continues to be a source of fascination. The original iron fence from that time still stands in Bowling Green and includes a plaque commemorating the statue’s ignominious end....

In 1937, a Bronx schoolteacher, Abel Meeropol, saw a gruesome picture of two black teenagers, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, who had been lynched in Marion, Indiana, seven years earlier. Afterwards he wrote the haunting poem “Bitter Fruit.” Meeropol, who was a member of the Communist Party, published the words to the song in the New York Teacher and New Masses. But fame for the song came after Meeropol showed it to the extraordinary blues singer Billie Holiday. Though her record company refused to record the song, she released it through a specialty label under the title “Strange Fruit” and performed it live (crediting the lyrics to “Lewis Allan,” Meeropol’s pseudonym). It was Meeropol and his wife who later adopted the two sons of Ethel Rosenberg and Julius Rosenberg after their execution in 1953.

This is the saddest most painful song ever, so beautifully performed.

Billie Holiday was a badass. She was threatened by Harry Anslinger, the Head Of the FBI, to stop singing about lynching. She did it anyway and continued to do it no matter what the monster tried to do to ruin her life. Now, Holiday and “Strange Fruit” are still remembered. Anslinger is not. I pray one day to be as brave as Billie was.
