Shedeur Sanders shatters Tom Brady record with enormous $17.7 million payout

Shedeur Sanders cashed in big after his first NFL season thanks to his loyal fanbase.

Sanders earned a record-breaking $17.7 million in group licensing income last season, according to the NFL Players Association's annual report.

That figure is separate from his playing salary and personal endorsement deals and reflects revenue generated from licensed products bearing his name, image, and likeness, including Cleveland Browns jerseys, trading cards, video games, and other merchandise.

It's amazing how many people will buy Browns gear.

Simply put, Sanders was one of the most popular players in the league during his rookie year despite beginning as a third-string quarterback and making just seven starts. Now preparing for his second NFL season, new Browns coach Todd Monken must decide whether Sanders will continue as the team’s starting quarterback....

According to Front Office Sports, Sanders’ $17.7 million payout is the most in a single season in NFL history and significantly more than the previous record, when Tom Brady earned $9.5 million in the 2021-22 season while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It also dwarfs Sanders’ contract with the Browns – the 24-year-old is set to make just over $1.1 million this year, the second of his four-year, $4.6 million rookie deal.

... Sanders could see another surge in merchandise sales this season after switching from No. 12 to No. 2 during the offseason.

The son of Hall of Fame cornerback and sports icon Deion, Sanders gained popularity while playing college football at Jackson State and later Colorado under his father, who remains the Buffaloes’ head coach.

... Things didn’t end up going as planned, though. Sanders famously slid all the way to the fifth round of the draft, where he was selected by Cleveland with the 144th overall pick.

His fate perhaps earned him even more fans and media attention, with plenty of people crying out for him to start for the Browns ahead of fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Eventually, he got that chance when Gabriel left the Browns’ Week 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens with a concussion. From there, Sanders started the remaining seven games of the season, logging 1,400 passing yards while throwing seven touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

Sanders is currently in an open competition with Deshaun Watson for who will be named the Browns starting quarterback to start the 2026 season.

People who actually know about such things are pretty universal in the opinion that pro sports teams and stadiums don't ever recoup the money spent. But obviously there's some value even if not directly economic. Because the demand for teams is so great, with cities trying to outbid each other for the privilege of being screwed over, I think it would take some kind of unified effort to refuse the team demands.

The Bears are on the verge of leaving downtown Chicago, while the Chiefs and Browns are also fleeing for the suburbs as long-devoted NFL fans pay the price for the pursuit of money and hosting Super Bowls.

I agree. The economic impact of having major sports team is significant. The Braves moving to Cobb County has spurred tremendous economic growth in the area.

I dunno about the Braves, but the general consensus is that it's mostly locals that spend the most money on the team and that that just reduces the amount they might otherwise spend elsewhere. And stadium jobs aren't that well paying or stable. Maybe the Braves have put out some detailed report?
