The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

You’ll Never Guess Which Country Is Causing the Most Global Warming
"Many people assume that if solar and wind are growing quickly, fossil fuels must be shrinking."

 :( I didn't guess correct. In my defense I was thinking per capita. We're back on top, baby!
... North America made up 47 percent of the world’s total emissions increase across 2025, led by the US. Much of that was fueled by outsize demand for data centers: as OilPrice.com analyst Robert Rapier notes, the US accounted for 40 percent of global data center electricity consumption, indicative of the impact the country’s AI boom is having on global emissions overall.
 I was ready to blame Moron Don.
Though the US also added some renewable energy — solar capacity alone grew by over 28 percent compared to the previous year — that doesn’t automatically mean dirty, non-renewable energy shrank. As Rapier observes, much of North America’s emissions growth was led specifically by the rising coal-based emissions in the US, which grew by 13 percent.
That surprises me.
... As Rapier obverses, “solar certainly has not failed. But clean energy growth has to be large enough to meet new demand while also displacing existing fossil fuel consumption. In 2025, that did not happen.”
Partly blame Moron Don?

Thanks greedy Exxon, gullible cons, amoral AI and gluttonous Americans.

The Death Toll From Climate Change Will Be Catastrophic, Scientists Say
"Obviously, we have to act. And we have to act fast."

... Now, a grim new estimate finds that approximately 1 billion people will die this century from various disasters driven by global warming, most of them poor and in the global south — a chilling data point as experts start to go beyond the mechanics behind climate change and move towards grappling with its dreadful toll.

...“Storms and floods kill directly, but also indirectly, by causing epidemics,” the paper reads. “Droughts kill when drinking water or food runs out. Rising seas kill when people are forced to leave their land and become migrants. In all these cases, poverty and AGW combine to cause human deaths.”

That is exactly how I plan to survive global warming. 8-)

It’s 90 degrees in the Arctic right now
The Arctic is heating faster than the rest of the planet. New data illustrate how dire that is

The Arctic is cooking. Across northern Russia—a region that is famously bitterly cold—temperatures this week have routinely surpassed 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius), adding to the mountain of broken heat records this summer has racked up so far.

... To put that in perspective, these temperatures are on par for Orlando, Fla., at this time of year.

... It's a dangerous feedback loop: as sea ice melts, the Arctic reflects less sunlight, and the ocean absorbs more heat. This generates even more sea ice loss. The region is warming as much as four times faster than the rest of the world.

... "With the building potentially record El Niño, it is likely that in 2027 we will see even more record heat than we are seeing this year," Gerard says.

Not that the planet needs any help with record-setting temperatures. In the U.S. in recent weeks, New York City's Central Park reached 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C) for the first time since 2012, parts of Montana soared to 111 degrees F (43.9 degrees C), and areas in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming surpassed 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C).
 It would be good to be older.

One small solution:

Letter: Nudge senators to push ahead with balcony solar

 8-)
Dear
My SENATOR TIMOTHY D. MOFFITT (R), Tim.Moffitt@ncleg.gov
My REPRESENTATIVE JENNIFER BALKCOM (R), Jennifer.Balkcom@ncleg.gov
SENATOR JULIE MAYFIELD (D), Julie.Mayfield@ncleg.gov
SENATOR MICHAEL A. LAZZARA (R), Michael.Lazzara@ncleg.gov

Re:
https://mountainx.com/opinion/letters/l ... ony-solar/

I support balcony solar 100%:
Rate reduction
Helping shade my living room
Doing a small thing towards saving the planet

I get blasted by western sun every afternoon year round.

Also, please ensure that HOAs can't stand in the way. Mine is quite stodgy about anything that alters "appearances".

Thank you,
(Vrede too)

Did you send along enough $$ to get their attention? Price of votes is pretty high.

MOFFITT (R), MAYFIELD (D) and LAZZARA (R) are co-sponsors. I'm not sending a penny to My REPRESENTATIVE JENNIFER BALKCOM (R). Maybe she'll follow MOFFITT's lead.

I read yesterday that trump has paid yet another wind turbine business to abandon its projects off CA and LA. The company was given 1.2 billion to abandon the project. This makes about half a dozen instances of this. China loves this stuff. trump is a fool.

While alternative energy sources are giving cows cancer over in Tru*pWorld, New California Republic moves along:
Solar panels produced 51% of California’s electricity in May, the first time the clean energy source surpassed the halfway mark for an entire month. The data counts both large-scale installations and the state’s bounty of rooftop arrays.

This isn’t just a milestone moment for California; it’s a milestone for the entire world. Think tank Ember says the state is the globe’s first major economy to cross the 50% threshold. (Hungary, at 47% in June 2025, is knocking at the door, though it has a far smaller GDP.)

So our thermostat tracks and reports on cooling/heating time, average outdoor highs and average indoor temp. Usually we don't get one because we don't usually need the a/c, but we got one for July. Average high was 81 compared to 77 last year. Yeah, it's only one year, could be aberration yada, but 4 degrees is a lot of change for one year.
