It's hot, humid and dangerous here. 80 degrees, 77%, and tornado warnings N and E from here. That never happens in the mountains. Same storm will hit Hooterville in about 1/2 hour.

We just got done with four days of 90°+, 90% humidity followed by the worst air quality Chicago has ever experienced and yesterday massive storms that took our power and trees all over the place.

I've been down there three times. The firsthand accounts and videos online are terrifying.

NPR spent 2 years tracking deaths from heat. We found a staggering hidden toll

... On average between 2018 and 2025, we estimate that some 9,000 deaths each year in the country are impacted by heat — a factor of five higher than the official average over that same period.

Some years, heat-related deaths can top 10,000.

The true figure could be even higher ...

2 die in Grand Canyon flash flood, only 1 person unaccounted for

The number of people unaccounted for after a deadly flash flood hit part of the Grand Canyon fell to one Monday as US Park Rangers said they had managed to make contact with over a dozen who had been missing....

(Dave, of the National Park Service) Black said 82 people had been rescued over Saturday and Sunday as a huge operation swung into gear, and rangers had been canvassing the park's camping permit system to determine who might have been there when disaster struck.

"They've cross-checked between permits, license plates, any information they have, and talked to family members, made sure that they were out," he said.

Coulda been worse.

... Black said better weather expected Tuesday would help in the hunt for the one person still known to be missing, as well as any day hikers who may have been caught up in the flood. Day hikers do not require a permit to be in the canyon....
