The ONE Bird Eagles Fear
Wow, I was guessing the peregrine falcon.

Of course my youtube feed is dotted with Jackie updates.
I was guessing something out of left field like ravens.

Why Don't Predators Hunt Sleeping Humans?

I always knew that "Night of the Grizzly" was a rare event, but I still wish I'd had this vid's info when I first moved to Montana.

... Sandy and Luna, Jackie and Shadow's eaglets, appear to have left the nest. FOBBV shared the news of this bittersweet milestone on Wednesday.

"It appears they have left the valley on their grand journey," FOBBV said. "We wish them both the best on their future adventures!"

With Sandy and Luna leaving the area and daddy duties apparently done, Jackie's mate, Shadow, is now on his "summer vacation." ...
 Happy trails, kids.
... For those wondering if the eagle was "Jolene," a subadult female spotted with Shadow shortly after Jackie was transported to Ojai Raptor Center, FOBBV said ...
Jolene

Nothing cuter than a baby goat, right? Not in NC.
Petting Zoo Visitors Warned of Potential Rabies Exposure After Multiple Baby Goats Test Positive for the Disease
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services were notified of the outbreak on Aug. 27

... “The goats were most likely exposed to rabies by a skunk that had entered the pen where they were kept in late July.”

“The NC State Laboratory of Public Health confirmed rabies virus in three of the baby goats on Aug. 28; a fourth goat was not tested but is also assumed to have been infected,” the statement continued....

Bat crawls into woman’s mouth as she sleeps

A doctor from Virginia says she woke up to find a live bat inside her mouth.

Dr Krista Edelman, a gastroenterologist from Richmond, told WWBT that she was sleeping next to her husband when she began dreaming that there was a "little mouse" trying to get into her mouth.

"In my dream I was reaching up to my mouth, and when I did, I grabbed something - ultimately I had folded the bat's wings," she recalled.

The couple caught the mammal so animal control officers could test it for rabies.
:o
Dr Edelman received initial preventive rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin doses, which were stopped once tests confirmed the bat was rabies-negative.

Letter: City must teach people how to interact with bears

This is a note that I wrote to City Council member Roberto (Bo) Hess in response to a post on his Facebook page about a mama bear of three cubs potentially being euthanized for entering and swatting at a woman in her home (there’s also a petition going around now to save this bear):

I live off of Town Mountain Road and often find myself in the midst of bear drama. Tourists and locals alike cruise up and down like they are on safari — stopping in the middle of the road, rolling down windows to snap photos, with some people even dumping food for the bears in the pull-off areas. There have been multiple instances I have witnessed where people were feeding bears, and the bears ended up getting hit by vehicles.

Idiots. :x
Every day, I am reminded that the city prioritizes tourism and expansion over the well-being of the inhabitants of this area and this land. At the very least, there should be a stricter protocol on dealing with humans who are baiting these wild animals, and on the other side of that is BearWise education that needs to be prioritized.

It is the responsibility of the local government, not only to inform the people who visit Asheville but to educate the locals. The city cannot continue to expand and turn a blind eye to these creatures who also call Asheville home....
Stricter penalties for intentional and unintentional bear baiting. It's not like being BearWise is a mystery.
Editor’s note: In a news release about the Aug. 18 incident in North Asheville, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission stated: “From our active investigation, the victim was not intentionally feeding the bear, but it had repeated access to pet food inside the home through an unlocked door and unsecured trash outside,” said NCWRC Black Bear Biologist Jenna Malzahn.
IDIOT!
“That’s why we want to remind folks about the dangers and consequences of unintentional feeding of wildlife, as repeated access to human-provided foods rewards bears and will lead to bears viewing human homes and neighborhoods as reliable sources of food.”
A fed bear is often a dead bear. :(

So we're not real birders, but we do enjoy seeing birds and put out feeders for them. But I found a birder's app "Merlin" that listens for and then identifies birds. Very sensitive and as far as I can tell works with high accuracy. We've been at Big Bear this week for a little Fall experience and a tad of Oktoberfest and I been using the app. It showed a list and pics of birds "likely" to be seen around Big Bear Lake now. The list was surprising to say the least.
Spoiler:
195 different birds!
Merlin is on GooglePlay.

Good stuff. I enjoy birding a bit too.

Just got back from my annual "take the dog for his hiking vacation" in the Upper Peninsula. It was the year of the Bald Eagle, must've seen more than twenty of them.

We've seen a couple of eagles. Don't know if either of them were the new girlfriend. Eagles all pretty much look alike from the ground.
