I've seen a couple of trumpy ads here lately. One of them rants about an "us vs them" type hate fest. I forgot what the other one was even about. But both of them at the end state that the ads are not affiliated with any candidate. I take that to mean the money for it is coming from trump and his big money pile lavished on him by wealthy idiots.

Yup, they've got more money than they know how to spend.


YouTube scrolling and before I could watch the vid I wanted two short ads came on back to back. Jennifer Balkom (R) is running for Congress in NC11 after creepy Chuck Edwards withdrew. The first ad supported her, the next one opposed her . Did YT do that on purpose?

I expect the nutjobs around here to vote for Republicans yet again. They enjoy being lied to is all I can figure. Since I came back to this area in 2015, I've watched the Sunday talk shows....This Week, Face the Nation, and Meet the Press. Over the past two months or so my digital antenna no longer gets ABC or CBS, so that leaves me only NBC. yesterday instead of Meet the Press, it was an hour long infomercial. Nexstar and Sinclair own the television stations in this area. It makes me wonder if they've been told to block those shows. It wouldn't surprise me. All I know is that yesterday I went in at 11 to watch Meet the Press and saw some "paid programming" statement. It made me let out a "oh, goddamn, what the fuck is this?" at what would describe as a high volume outburst.

Public radio news says that Jamie Ager (D) is leading Balkcom (R) by a slim margin in NC11. I'm skeptical, but it's refreshing to have a little hope. Balkcom's own ads are awful - grating nasal voice:

It happened again on YT twice - one of Balkcom's own ads followed immediately by an anti-Balkcom ad. Are the anti-Balkcom forces paying extra to organize this and does Balkcom know it's happening? Not complaining, just curious. Ftr, both pro and anti-Balkcom ads also play independently.

Opinion - Trump’s approval plunges into the 20s, and Republicans give up

It was received wisdom during President Trump's first term that his hard floor of support sat somewhere around one-third of Americans. Those were the MAGA true believers, the die-hards, the folks who stood in line for hours to attend their fifth Trump rally of the year. That rule of thumb proved to be true. Trump's approval was still hovering in the 40s before ending around 34 percent on Jan. 4, 2021.

Whatever truths we can glean from Trump's trainwreck of a second term, it is clear the MAGA base is now deserting him in record numbers.

An American Research Group poll published this week found Trump's approval at just 29 percent — a new low for his presidency and a flashing warning sign for the congressional Republicans being dragged beneath the waves by the president's plummeting popularity.

... The apathy on display among Republican leaders is baffling, given the scope of America's affordability crisis. A Fox News poll conducted Sept. 11-14 found that more than two-thirds of voters — including one-quarter of Republicans — blame Trump for making the economy worse. Those voters also trust Democrats over Republicans to address the inflation crisis by a 15-point margin, one of the largest spreads to date.

... Meanwhile, swing voters need only look at Trump's recent comments on gas prices to know no help is coming from Republicans. At a campaign event in North Carolina last Wednesday, Trump scolded Americans for complaining about high gas prices when things could be so much worse.

"It's a very inexpensive price to pay for what we've done," Trump said, referencing the effect his endless war in Iran is having on global oil prices. "Remember that. It's a little more. Frankly, even if it was a lot more."

"Gas prices could be worse" is an odd campaign message for an incumbent president who campaigned on a promise to lower the price at the pump to below $2 a gallon. Then again, so is Kennedy's remark that Republicans could make life easier for Americans if they felt like it. The same Republican lawmakers who guaranteed voters a golden age now seem offended that they were expected to actually deliver on those lofty promises.

With less than two months to go until Election Day, Republicans seem incapable of hiding their own apathy about what happens to the people they govern. They increasingly sound like a party that has already internalized a wipeout electoral defeat and decided the affordability crisis is someone else's problem. At long last, the American people get to see Republicans for the do-nothing frauds they are.

Alabama’s Tuberville worries aloud about airline personnel joining ‘the furry community’
In the closing weeks of his gubernatorial race, the senator is focused on “bringing back mental institutions” and fearing furries who fly airplanes.

On Tuesday afternoon, Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama declared via social media, “I’m heading to the Senate floor to talk about how the Democrat-Socialists have intentionally caused mass gender-confusion among our young people, leading to violence and a disturbing trend of online ‘furry’ culture.”

Evidently, he was quite serious, holding the Senate floor for roughly 20 minutes, peddling a variety of offensive claims about transgender people and even calling for prison sentences for physicians who provide gender-transition care. For good measure, the Alabaman added: “It is in the best interests of our country to bring back mental institutions as a normal part of our society. … Otherwise, we’re just sitting ducks until the next gender-confused person decides to show up at our churches or our schools and start committing acts of violence. It’s coming.”

But that’s not all he said.

I have a suggestion for an immediate mental institution commitment.

... But as odd as the floor speech was, the broader electoral context was of particular interest: In six weeks, Alabama voters will elect their next governor, and Tuberville is both the Republican nominee and the odds-on favorite.

As the midterm cycle enters the home stretch, in other words, this guy’s closing message has nothing to do with the affordability crisis or the nation’s ongoing war, and everything to do with “bringing back mental institutions” and fearing furries who fly airplanes.

Tuberville’s Democratic rival is former Sen. Doug Jones. Watch this space.
