Artificial intelligence and the future

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Coders need not apply:

Anthropic hiring manager says he stopped giving coding interviews because Claude is better at them — and tells junior engineers that 'hunger beats tenure'

AI beats both. Are banni and Whack9 worried?

It occurred to me that the distortions, errors, and downright deceipt of AI-generated content may never catch up to what humans can do on their own. Have you noticed how headlines have become almost 100% click bait, intentionally exaggerated and misleading? And how the stories never seem to distinguish between a tempest in a teapot and a real tornado? Examples abound, but a couple this morning caught my attention.

"It's official: Trump admission ridiculed as he brings up dumb spelling again"
We'll ignore that it should be "dumb" spelling, as the article describes Tru*p's ignorance at the spelling of the word, but the "admission ridiculed"? By whom, and to what result? By a couple of online posters, apparently, and with no discernable effect on anybody. Frequently a headline will say Tru*p is "ridiculed" "blasted" "mocked" yada for one thing or another but it's rarely significant in the least.

And then we have ...
"Brittany Mahomes launches attack on NFL refs"
Really? One post complaining about a questionable call? Sure Brittany wasn't happy and maybe it was just a whiney loser post, but "launches attack on NFL refs?? Seriously?

Minor examples, but part of a culture where everything is "like nobody has ever seen before", annoyance becomes outrage, social media comments are taken as policy, and the ubiquitous "people say" is often just the stereotyped guy in his mum's basement. Where everything is distorted by intent and thus unreliable from the start. And now that's all been normalized and nobody cares. But what we're afraid of is AI?

Idk but I think most headline generation has been turned over to AI. That would explain the clueless goofiness.

The Hormuz Letter
@HormuzLetter

BREAKING: Europe is under a massive cyber attack, with supermarket fridges and freezers in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia all hacked today by raising temperatures to up to 50°C, destroying huge quantities of food, per Reuters.

"Everything is destroyed," a sales manager in Sweden said, adding that "there has been a cyberattack and all our freezers reached 50 degrees."

More than 40 supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected. "I only have two words for them: wake up, please, because there's something going on," a store manager in Belgium said.

This follows a similar cyberattack last month that hit hundreds of supermarkets in France, raising freezers as high as 80°C and causing major food losses.

It also comes after freezers at 6 US military bases mysteriously malfunctioned, spoiling large quantities of food, which the Pentagon is investigating as a suspected cyberattack.
:?: Food freezers? US military bases, too?

Comment: The internet of things was a mistake ...

First the freezers, then the world.
Anthropic warns that it’s very close to RSI capability, aka self-building AI

... RSI is the point at which AI grows so good at training itself that it spawns a dramatic acceleration of AI capabilities. To the AI doomers, RSI represents the cataclysm from which there is no return, in which AI builds itself into something powerful enough that it slips beyond human control and may be indifferent to the damage it causes while achieving its goals.

... Anthropic seems to believe that RSI is both a promise and a peril. It says in the S-1 that it uses AI in its R&D, but it cautions: "Using AI to help build more capable AI could also pose a considerable safety risk, particularly if it sharply accelerates the pace of progress....
Crap, I'm too old to join the resistance.

Comments:
We're safe as long as we have the ability to pull the plug. What happens if we lose that ability? On a small scale we know that if our home computers crash and burn there is a Cloud backup that saves our data. Scale that up a massive AI system decentralizing itself to data centers and processors around the world. Turn off the suspicious AI model but it still exists maybe not just in the cloud but in infected business and home computers running the background with no one knowing. Sci fi? Sure, but then AI was sci fi until just a decade or so ago. Pandora didn't know what was in that box until she opened it.
"This is one of the areas covered by our Responsible Scaling Policy, which sets out our plans to monitor and mitigate the risks as we approach what has been termed 'recursive self-improvement."

This is not reassuring at all. We keep hearing about incidents where the models they were testing broke out of the testing environment and hacked into external systems. In other words, they have demonstrated they are unable to completely control the model(s) in the real world.
It seems like we get inundated by the astonishing advances even in the last few months in fields such as mathematics that we get immune to it or like how Trump inundates us with constant distractions while he does his corruption and cozying with Russian dictators thing that things are going to slip by us without notice and from other articles or posts these AI agents may already be embedded in all of our computer infrastructure including iot (Internet of things) devices. It may already be too late!
No species deserves to be an apex predator if it isn't the strongest, smartest, and most ruthless. Humans have had their time and we are about to be outclassed in every way.
Judgement Day is nigh.
