Re: Paula Deen Drama
When you read what she said - and what she admitted to, and what she kept saying - it's not really just about using the term "nigger."
She let one of the restaurant managers keep referring to the cook as "his little monkey." She had a black employee come into an interview and told him not to stand in front of the dark curtain because he'd just blend in. She let Bubba show porn to the employees in his restaurant (that she owned). She fired a manager for having sex with an underaged server, but didn't turn him in, and yelled at Bubba saying (paraphrased) "I've worked too hard for all this to lose it over a piece of pussy." She admitted to allowing, and participating in, racial and other harassing "jokes." And on and on. She may or may not have actually said the words "I'd like to have some little niggers dressed up like slaves" - and she denies that - but in the denial she said something very similar and made the allegation pretty believable.
And I see Cherokee Harrah's is "re-branding" her restaurant there, too.

The headline there is a bit misleading. I didn't see the interview live, but I saw the "tearful" part replayed later in HD. Much bawling - no real tears. No real understanding of why she's in trouble, either. Tone deaf and oblivious.

I'm sure that none of those holier-than-thou executives that disassociated their companies from Paula Deen have never used the 'N' word.
Why, I can even remember once back in the fall of '87 that I..........

Re: Paula Deen Drama
You really think it was "holier-than-thou-ness"? The use "in the past" of the term "nigger" was barely the tip of her iceberg. Those h-t-t exectutives made the choice to disassociate their brands with a character that was far from her own public brand. No different from Lance Armstrong, for example. Do you think those executives wouldn't have preferred this never to have come up? Do you think they didn't consider "Hmmm, I wonder if we can just see if this blow over..."Mr.B wrote:I'm sure that none of those holier-than-thou executives that disassociated their companies from Paula Deen have never used the 'N' word.

The telling part for me was when she was asked if she'd ever used the N-word, and she said, "Yes, of course." OF COURSE????

Well, her public character is one that nobody should be surprised to find a bit of racism there. In a different context, she might have gotten away with some of the language, but considering the information came to light during a million dollar lawsuit alleging harassment and discrimination, and considering the cavalier way she responded to the claims about things that went on in her restaurants, it's not going to be something that a lot of companies want to have their name associated with. But even Wal-Mart? Man, that's baaaad.

She should have settled and insisted on a confidentiality statement. It would have been cheaper to cough up a few million than losing a lot more millions.

It wouldn't even have cost her a "few million" if she had settled it early. She's either really unreasonably, bat-shit stubborn or she's got some really incompetent attorneys. I'm guessing the former.Dryer Vent wrote:She should have settled and insisted on a confidentiality statement. It would have been cheaper to cough up a few million than losing a lot more millions.

Re: Paula Deen Drama
This can't be good news for the Butter Queen:
Paula Deen's publisher has canceled a deal with her for multiple books, including an upcoming cookbook that was the No. 1 seller on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, following her admission she used a racial slur.
Ballantine Books announced Friday it would not release "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up," which was scheduled for October and was the first of a five-book deal announced early last year. Interest in it had surged as Deen, who grew up in Albany, Ga., and specializes in Southern comfort food, came under increasing attack for acknowledging she had used the N-word.
Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., said it had decided to cancel the book's publication after "careful consideration." It had no comment beyond what was in its brief statement, spokesman Stuart Applebaum said.
Later Friday, Deen's literary agent, Janis Donnaud, said that the entire deal had been called off. http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/bo ... -1.5589508

Good line. Jesus supposedly said it. Jesus also supposedly said, "go and sin no more." She has shown no remorse and by many accounts continued the same behavior for a long time.Troll Patrol wrote:Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.![]()

Re: Paula Deen Drama
Oh god, if only our Government and in particular Christian Republicans lived by that and stopped invading countries that have thrown no stones. If only our government would stop using "biblical" principles for the excuse to outlaw gay marriage because it's a sin, while allowing every other sin including polyester, divorce, etc.... oh yeah and invading and murdering innocent people.Troll Patrol wrote:Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.![]()
Nah, lets just apply our principles to the one narrow example. That's easier because it agrees with what "I" believe...... because "I" am most likely a racist anyway.

Re: Paula Deen Drama
"Usual double standard"? How so? Because Baldwin is male? Because his behaviour was in keeping with his generally well known asshole personality? Because he slammed a gay guy and nobody cares as much about that as slamming black people? Explain the "no surprise."
Re: Paula Deen Drama
I don't think it's a double standard with a guy like Baldwin. He has proven his liberal bent, his support of gay rights, etc. In fact, just today, and I need to admit it, my spouse asked if I liked a particular fabric at Joann's Fabrics for a particular project. I remarked, "It's gay." I am a staunch supporter of gay rights, have many friends who are gay, and I said disparagingly, "that was wrong for me to say that."
It's what's in a person's heart that matters. I personally believe that Deen has racism in her heart. I firmly believe that Baldwin doesn't.
