Somebody said, "My prediction: DOMA is doomed; Prop 8 goes down, but with narrow impact."
Ummm, that would be me.

Re: The homophobic thread :>
Better Supreme Court experts than me were still offering multiple possibilities on what basis the Court would use to scuttle Prop 8 as recently as yesterday. Finding lack of standing was always one of the more likely. It's also the least exciting, yawn. Seems they could have done that with a two hour meeting an hour after reading the appeal.Vrede wrote:Yeah, but if you had posted, "Prop 8 goes down when SCOTUS declines ruling on it," I'd really be impressed.

Re: The homophobic thread :>
Windsor was over eligibility for federal benefits and federal recognition of valid state marriages. It did not address interstate recognition, which remains a problem.
The Prop 8 proponents were not part of, nor represented, the State of California. When Prop 8 passed, it altered the state Constitution, thus becoming the State's job to enforce and defend. Plaintiffs were those directly affected by the law, and they won when Prop 8 was originally ruled unconstitutional. The State did not appeal, but the "proponents" of Prop 8 did. There was no legal authority for them to assume the responsibility for doing the State's job.

I'll stick with my prediction, while admitting that for this case I should have specified "Section 3 is doomed," since that was the only part up for grabs. You're pickier than a lawyer.Vrede wrote:So, seems headlines like "Supreme Court Strikes Down Defense Of Marriage Act" are inaccurate . . . as were predictions like "DOMA is doomed".![]()
Thanks for the Prop. 8 explanation, I wondered since the CA Supreme Court (advisory) and the federal appeals court did recognize standing. In effect, SCOTUS - likely more con than either - told the homophobes, "No, gays getting married doesn't affect you or your marriages at all." Hah!

You allow pictures of your private collection of dolls? I guess that answers the question, if Mr. B keeps them that long LOTS of patches are probably necessary.

Edith has a different hair style. It doesn't seem very Christian to be posting
picutres of a nekkid old woman, though I guess it does make a good lesson
in gravity. Yep, all the nutters are going crazy over this. Let's face it, they're
on the wrong side of history with this one, but it's fun watching them being
totally obvlious to that fact. Tick Mf Tock.

Nope, it's pretty much over. Sure it will be a while before the states below the
Mason-Dixon line go for it, but it's time to unfurl the white flag of surrender.

The "won battle not war" analogy is not entirely appropriate. It's true, but unlike real "battles" these can't be undone. The states with equality in marriage will stay that way. The feds will always recognize those marriages. The idea that "it's not over" is held only by those who will keep fighting wherever there is an opportunity to deny rights, but will never gain more than they have now, and every "battle" lost is a battle lose forever.

Wasn't sure if this was more appropriate for this thread or one of the wingnut threads . . . then decided it didn't matter.

People are crazy and times are strange. I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range.

Yes, *mostly* it's the wingnuts that are homophobic, either category couldn't be more appropriate.

Our country is swirling deeper and deeper in the shithole every day. Queers, faggots, twat twinkies, buttsuckers, etc. are being accepted as normal humansO Really wrote:The "won battle not war" analogy is not entirely appropriate. and the public is being forced by the whims of an appointed court to accept these filthy shit-eating groveling slime.
A black can call another a nigger; a queer can call another a queer; but let someone admit they've ever used the words, and they get ostracized by a society that thinks sexual deviation should be taught in schools and the kiddies should be shown examples of "how beautiful" same sex is.
Sure, normal people will be eventually see the clock tick-tock down to the filling of the shit hole, but that doesn't mean that the nasty, faggoty-assed
lifestyle will automatically be accepted. Maybe if we're lucky, some new deadly exotic non-curable disease will hit the queers and they'll die off.
