dear cons, please post list of conservative accomplishments
I not trying to be a smartass, but I really can’t think of anything. There is a big long list of liberal accomplishments that have served to benefit civilization and mankind over the past few thousand years, but other than dying or falling in a well, what have the cons ever offered to society

Eisenhower got the interstate highway system jump started. Reagan melted the Iron Curtain. I forget the rest.
Oh, Ike also warned us about what we have now had to deal with these past 40 years or so; the infamous military-industrial complex. I think they should give him another star, except his son married Nixon's daughter.

That's true, but neither of those guys would meet "conservative" criteria now.

Yeah, the GOP has pretty steadily imploded but seems to be full speed ahead instead of, uh, stopping to check the map.

Seems to me getting nothing done is pretty much the fundamental philosophy of those calling themselves "conservative." They favor minimalist government, so they're not going to bring forth bold initiatives (like the interstate system); they don't want to spend any money, so they're not going to fund potentially game-changing programs (like CCC, NASA, etc.); they do like wars, but aren't very good at conducting them; bottom line, most of their efforts are "anti" not "pro" anything. Even Boner pleaded that his Congress should be measured not by what it passed but by what it repealed. Now there's a legacy for ya'.

Somebody from the "conservative" side should show up and point out that Republicans were instrumental in passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They were, indeed, and we are eternally grateful. But that vote was more on a regional basis than political ideology, and can hardly be claimed as a "conservative" initiative.

ike may have had the sight, but he didn't have what it takes to do anything about it. his starting the viet nam war gave the military industrial complex a big push to the top.
the highways, I disagree here too. they were pushed through by big business and trucking, resulting in huge far-away businesses shipping products over the consumer subsidized highways to huge outlets and destroying local jobs and businesses
and runnie metling iron curtains – bullshit. 40 years of war and the cold war arms race finally did the soviet union in – runnie was just there for the photo op

I disagree; there was a lack of "big business" other than the wartime efforts at the time. Big business didn't really take off until after the war. Ike admired the German Autobahn, and our interstate highway system was modeled on that except in general our interstates aren't three feet thick and laid out with aesthetic considerations being important. The interstate highway system was a boon to big business only after it was constructed, with government money as you say. Reagan got credit for the extinction of the USSR and its satellites only because he was president at the time, just as if the USSR had damn near destroyed the USA in a nuclear exchange he would be blamed for it because he was president at the time. I think we can all agree that the interstate system is vital since most of the country has no viable and dependable public transit like Europe and most of Asia has. We're BIG and by God we need a lot of gas to get around and relish our "independence."billy.pilgrim wrote:neoplacebo wrote:Eisenhower got the interstate highway system jump started.
