That vision of American Supremacy - there have been plenty of other "New World Order" visions over the centuries, all with different and usually conflicting goals - was nothing new. It didn't start with NAFTA, and it didn't end there.

Except that Canada's labor and environment laws are pretty much the same as America's both before and since NAFTA. As for Mexico, the side-deals to NAFTA mandated *better* labor and environment laws there.

Trade goods, not manufactured goods. There's an important difference:

The trade goods that Canada sells the US includes a whole lot of oil, hydro electricity, plus raw materials from aluminum to lumber. This gives the US a trade deficit with Canada on trade goods.

But that cheap energy and raw materials creates jobs in the US. When you look at manufacturing - the jobs you're so concerned with - it's Canada that has the 600,000 high-paying manufacturing job trade deficit.

Likewise, Mexico is selling the US vast amounts of oil and raw materials, that are not costing American jobs.

With auto manufacturing now in Mexico, Mexico could just as easily put similar tariffs on cars from the US.

And yes, there were plenty of protectionist American laws before NAFTA. My favorite was the one that declared that removed Kentucky (or was it Kansas?) from North America. The US slapped a huge tariff on Canadian-made Toyota cars because the transmissions - made in Kentucky or Kansas - "weren't made in North America."

Since the agreement had been signed by Bush I under his fast-track prerogative, Clinton did not alter the original agreement. The U.S. House passed it with considerably more Republican than Democrat support.

All Clinton was really responsible for was a couple add-on agreements to raise Mexican worker and environmental standards, to try to level the playing field for American workers.

And it's created more jobs in America than it took away.
