Privacy Issues
Facebook use, like telephone use, is voluntary, but still....

Re: Privacy Issues
I resigned from Facebook months ago because it was always such a temptation to post embarassing and self incriminating things; I've decided to wait until the NSA comes out with their own social network site. As a side note, I just noticed a news story on yahoo about a 60 year old woman fugitive from San Diego who posted "catch me if you can" a few days ago (she's running from a failure to appear on insurance fraud charges and is facing a 20 year sentence and in excess of a million in fines). She posted from some pseudo American expatriot enclave about 15 miles south of San Diego. The "authorities" will not reveal their methods in tracking her down.

That's at least San Ysidro, if not over the border in Tijuana.neoplacebo wrote:. . . She posted from some pseudo American expatriot enclave about 15 miles south of San Diego . . . .

This goes to show that if you tweet, post, utter, declare, or otherwise possess a tendency toward self incrimination and are already "wanted" you need to post your stuff and get the hell out of town before you post your next missive. I guess.

If you are in a civil or criminal suit, filing bankruptcy, getting a divorce, do something you shouldn't have done, or have a job you like, keep your private "sins" off the grid. Someone dumped several household garbage bags in the state forest behind our house. We found a name in the stuff. I ran the name on Facebook, and the dumper had just posted that she was working at Don's Drive In until 9 that night and her friends should meet her to party after that. Guess where the Forest Ranger went that night??? Guess who spent the next day cleaning up the garbage???

A major reason I got off Facebook is that following this advice is insufficient. OTHERS can post their ill-advised acts, photos or opinions, and then link you - via your Facebook account - to their posts.Dryer Vent wrote:If you are in a civil or criminal suit, filing bankruptcy, getting a divorce, do something you shouldn't have done, or have a job you like, keep your private "sins" off the grid.

Yep, Facebook is nothing but a bad decision. Sometimes not having one is a bad decision. You never know what employers or anyone else is looking for, or could be offended by.rstrong wrote:A major reason I got off Facebook is that following this advice is insufficient. Facebook and smartphones....the scourge of mankind.

Smartphones a "scourge"? Definitely not to me. It would be interesting to see what else you consider a "scourge."

Re: Privacy Issues
With this latest revelation today about our beloved NSA, the XKeyscore thing or whatever it is.....I'd be real wary if I had any IP closed circuit cameras in or around my house. Just sayin'.....

Re: Privacy Issues
Yesterday, in addition to telephone calls, I used my smartphone for:
office and personal email
texting (a) my wife and (b) people I was meeting up with
Airline flight check-in and boarding pass
Find a vendor on an airport concourse
Find out which train is next at the Metro and what station to get off on
Map myself from the station to the hotel
Check location and menu of restaurant
evite collegues to restaurant and reserve table
call/schedule cab
access office computer
check tv schedule
check weather for next day in destination
take and send photos
record meeting notes
video part of a presentation
pay some bills
transfer funds
find lowest price for gas
check waiting line at airport security
listen to an audiobook
...and probably more I don't remember.
Scourge? No way.

bb's great great great grandpa spoke out againt the US mail and the destructive effect it had on personal meetings it's negative impact on the construction industry
