As I understand it, slaves outnumbered free people in Europe all through the Greek and Roman eras and into the Medieval era. What ended slavery was the invention of the rigid horse collar.
Before the rigid horse collar, a horse could do four times the work of a man. But it also ate four time as much food, so the more flexible slaves were a better deal.
After the rigid horse collar, a horse could do TEN times the work of a man. But it still only ate four time as much food. It was now the better deal.
And so European slavery ended until 500 years later until a market developed (America, where aboriginals had slavery and traded to settlers) a source developed (newly explored Africa, where slavery was common), and a need developed (cotton).
