A Third Of Louisiana Republicans Blame Obama For Hurricane Katrina Response Under Bush

Sabrina Siddiqui
08/21/2013
A large number of Louisiana Republicans think President Barack Obama is to blame for the federal government's poor response to Hurricane Katrina, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released Wednesday -- despite the fact that the storm occurred three years before he took office.

The Democratic-leaning polling firm, which provided its results to Talking Points Memo, found that 29 percent of Louisiana Republicans said Obama was responsible for the Katrina response. Twenty-eight percent put the blame on President George W. Bush, whose administration did in fact oversee the federal response to Katrina. Nearly half (44 percent) of the Louisiana Republicans polled didn't know who to blame.

Bush was heavily criticized at the time for the government's response to Katrina, a storm that caused 1,833 fatalities, damaged an estimated $81 billion in property, and ranks among the five deadliest hurricanes in United States history. He remained on vacation in Texas as the hurricane rocked the Gulf Coast, before belatedly cutting his trip short and returning to Washington. An infamous photo of Bush peering out the window of Air Force One at the wreckage was also attacked as insensitive, and the former president himself later acknowledged the photo was a "huge mistake" in a 2010 interview.

Bush's approval ratings plunged in the months following the disaster, and his administration was dogged by suggestions that race was a factor in its response efforts.

During a live concert for hurricane relief, rapper Kanye West said, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," a moment Bush later said was the "most disgusting moment" of his presidency. Condoleezza Rice, who served as Bush's secretary of state, recalled in her memoir that there was clearly "a race problem" during Katrina, although she disputed allegations that Bush or his administration were racist.

Yep, I'm sure all those Louisiana Republicans knew about Obama's vote on that
bill. Sure they did. Just shows how absolutely stupid the wingnuts are--north or
south. And since the bill passed anyway.....never mind.

Did Obama let the situation in New Orleans go unaided for several days after Katrina because it would interfere with his vacation?

How do you know that he wasn't voting against extending funding for the Iraq war?

Or the eighteen benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet?

Or the date set for tamper-resistant prescription pads that was too soon to produce and distribute the enormous quantity of new prescription pads needed, among other problems?

Any attempt to keep a record on how senators voted on the issues is made meaningless by grouping entirely unrelated issues into one omnibus bill. Senators may vote against an issue that they actually support, because they might find opposing another issue to be more important. That's how the system is set up, because neither party likes accountability.

edit: unrelated

If there is, we've not seen it yet. Yeah, that trick about grouping completely unrelated issues into a bill of a serious nature is just stupid. It's as if there is a bill under consideration that would solve many problems and benefit many Americans, but instead of it being recognized as a good thing to do, someone attaches an amendment to it which requires every other house to have its driveway lined with dead cat heads so that the reflections from their eyes will guide you up your lane on a dark night.....nobody will vote for it. Dumbasses.

I guess so, but surely there is a limit....somewhere.

Colin Powell laid it on them down in Raleigh today; saw part of it on the news tonight. If the GOP had any sense, they would have drafted Powell long ago.....oh, wait, it was the Republican president who "decided" to keep Rumsfeld and let Powell go. Dumbass.

Ancient history. More of the liberal "lets blame Bush shit." Don't you clowns ever sleep? Bush has been out of office over 5 years and you're still
sucking the shit tit. Get a life.

My post wasn't about blaming Bush; it was about how Colin Powell told the wingnut faction of the Republican party how severely they're fucking up with this voter ID business. I include you in that faction, as you exhibit the typical lame "blame Bush" reaction to anything that happens to allude to him, even in a tangential way. That he was a dumbass changes nothing.
