Reckless homicide is hardly "little more than littering." And it could have had a much more severe sentence. But the point is, he was charged and would have been tried had he not pled out. In most gun accidents, there is nothing but an "opps."Boatrocker wrote:Yeah. I'd like a better explanation of exactly how this guy did this. A Ruger revolver made in the last 50 years or so should have a transfer bar that would keep the firearm from firing when dropped. Unless he was going around with it manually cocked? Somebody want to explain how a Ruger 357 fires by being dropped on the terlet floor? Not to say it couldn't happen, but it seems unlikely. Where's Mad American when you need him?

There have been two recent incidents in which a person was shot by his own gun while "showing it" to someone else or letting someone else "examine it." Both of them are, uh, dead. Just sayin'.O Really wrote:I'd like a better explanation of exactly how this guy did this. Lying scum-bag la Pierre blames the background checking system, which is weak largely because of NRA obstruction. Now says "I’ve been into this whole (background) check business for 20-some years; I’ve said the system is broken for 20 years and nobody listens,” he said."
Do you suppose anybody will remind him that it was about 20 years ago when they privatized the checking? The government used to do their own.

Some good news out of Florida ...http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/new-t ... t-20-years
Woman who got 20 years for shooting her floor while Zimmerman got off for shooting Martin gets new trial. Of course, if you read the article, it becomes pretty clear that she was not treated the same way by the court that others have been. Black woman in Florida - whodathunkit? Of course, the other lesson here is for the "nascar" type people who think all these SYG type laws protect the "good guys." By any definition (other than that black female with a gun part), Marissa Alexander would have been the "good guy" here. Concealed carry permit, active restraining order against a spouse with a previous conviction for domestic violence for attacking her, in her own house... Wonder why the jury didn't believe her? Oh yeah, there were those faulty jury instructions (per the article). Opps.

Yeah, I happened to see that story earlier today. Good for her. It still doesn't negate the wacko wingnuttery behind her original conviction, though.

Re: Gun Legislation
No, it doesn't. But some of that loonery came from good intentions with bad consequences. The 10-20-life mandatory sentencing is partly to blame, but it's clear in this instance that the jury was instructed at a much more stringent level than what should have been. Was this because the judge was ignorant of the law? Maybe. But the evidence presented would seem to compel at least a presumption that her story was true. So there are two culprits: the stringent jury instructions and the mandatory sentencing requirements. Result was certainly not justice by any standard. Hopefully she'll walk free after this next trial.neoplacebo wrote:Yeah, I happened to see that story earlier today. Good for her. Re: Gun Legislation
AN ACTUAL CRAIG'S LIST PERSONALS AD:
To the Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in Downtown Savannah night before last.
I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over along with my valuables, shortly after you pulled
the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings.
I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message.
First, I'd like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn't expect you to actually crap in your pants when
I drew my pistol after you took my jacket.. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason....
my girlfriend was happy that I just returned safely from my 2nd tour in Afghanistan ..
She had just bought me that Kimber Custom Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster
for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head ... isn't it?!
I know it probably wasn't fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with crap in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. (That prevented you from calling or running to your buddies to come help mug us again).
After I called your mother or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, I explained the entire episode of what you'd done.
Then I went and filled up my gas tank as well as the tanks of four other people in the gas station---on your credit card.
The guy with the big motor home took 153 gallons and was extremely grateful!
I gave your shoes to a homeless guy outside Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all the cash in your wallet.
(That made his day!)
I then threw your wallet into the big pink "pimp mobile" that was parked at the curb.
Later, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA's office and one to the FBI, while mentioning
President Obama as my possible target.
The FBI guy seemed really intense and we had a nice long chat (I guess while he traced your number).
In a way, perhaps I should apologize for not killing you ... but I feel this type of retribution
is a far more appropriate punishment for your threatened crime. I wish you well as you try to sort through some of these rather immediate pressing issues, and can only hope that you have the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path you've chosen to pursue in life..
Remember, next time you might not be so lucky. Have a good day!
Thoughtfully yours,
Semper fi,
Alex

Saying it's an actual ad on Craig's list in your first sentence is pretty good proof you believed it. The fact is you fell for an idiotic piece of glurge. Why?
