What happened to "there are no ex Marines, just former Marines" or "once a Marine always a Marine"?
Apparently she was a bad Marine, but a Marine none the less.

That applies if you toughed it out and served your commitment. She wasn't a bad Marine; she wasn't any kind of Marine.
Just a screwed up body in a Marine uniform that got her picture taken in the uniform.

Oliver North was a Marine, and he was part of a group that illegally sold weapons to Iran; some of those weapons were used by Hezbollah to blow up a bunch of other Marines. I think he was eventually convicted to get off the hook.

I've got nothing against Marines. My dad was a Marine in WWII, and a very good friend of mine for years was a career Marine with 3 tours in Vietnam. But if you listen to what the Marine Corps says, and what individual Marines say, after undergoing Marine training, nobody is ever quite the same as they were before. And you can't spend a whole bunch of time and effort teaching people they're the baddest asses in the valley and then be surprised when occasionally some of them run off the rails.

I've got nothing against Marines. My dad was a Marine in WWII, and a very good friend of mine for years was a career Marine with 3 tours in Vietnam. But if you listen to what the Marine Corps says, and what individual Marines say, after undergoing Marine training, nobody is ever quite the same as they were before. Wasn't Oswald a Marine? And that initial Texas school campus shooter? the guy who got up in the bell tower and started picking folks off.....I think his name was Charles Starkweather or something like that. He was a Marine as well. I have nothing against Marines, either. Hell, when I was in the Navy, the Marines did all our guard duty at naval stations all over the world......they're part of the Department of the Navy. Marines hold themselves to be unique to a degree....their basic training is more intense than the other services, and they're a much smaller group than any of the other armed forces. I suppose those factors, as well as their combat history, give them some sort of rationale to declare themselves special in some way. I don't begrudge them that. And anyone can go off the rails at any time.

I have seen young skinny guys go into the Marines, and finish their basic training looking like piss-ants on steroids! Believe me, USMC training is mostly physical and centered on survival and discipline, along with the arms handling. Training also instills confidence.......and that's where the rail-jumpers get their butts in a sling.....thinking they can handle any situation or whip any butt coming and going.

Navy training, (when I was a swabby) was based mostly on discipline, hygiene, and mental sharpness.
The specialized training came after boot camp.

Very much so. It was bad enough "training" for me to have to do it in early January at Great Lakes Naval Training Facility. It lasted into the last week of February.....fabulous. I don't remember any gay guys either in training or in the fleet; if there were any, they kept low profiles. I did once go into a gay bar in Oakland by mistake. Oh, it wasn't just me; it was me and another guy who went in there. I soon realized we were in the wrong bar.....I suppose if any of those bar guys were sailors, it was just consequential.

I too was in Great Lakes in those months; the year was 1966-67. It snowed every darn weekend; and I don't mean a few inches here and there!
To earn weekend liberty, we shoveled snow.....lots of snow. Myself and four other recruits went to Chicago for weekend liberty, and we went to this nightspot that was literally crawling with gorgeous young ladies who were seafood hunting.....hell-bent on hooking up with a sailor......
one problem with that.....they weren't ladies....especially in the gender sense! We were quicker getting out than we were getting in!
This 'ol country boy ain't never seen nothing like that!

Gee; that place sounds like it was "ahead of its time" as it were......I was at boot camp in 1975 and there was no such thing as "liberty" then. None of us had any reason to be aware that the rest of the world existed until the nine weeks was up.

This was just after boot camp prior to my being shipped off to my next school. (still at Great Lakes)

I know what you mean...the only "liberty" we had in boot camp was when we were allowed to light up a smoke....providing we had any.

I remember boot camp in '75 as being mostly a ten week waste of time. The fire fighting and drown-proofing were the only things I carried away with me. The USN back then was largely an OJT enterprise. Anyhow, I remember a couple of guys we suspected as being gay, but there were no blanket parties or dry showers for them. In fact, I don't remember "queers" being an issue to anyone until we got lectured by the jarhead Sergeant Of the Guard at NPS Mare Island, followed by an "orientation" from the lead investigator of the Mare Island NIS office.

My youngest daughter was sent home from a slightly upscale, non-chain Italian joint in Greenville one shift for not kowtowing to some preacher's wife who was showing her sanctimonious ass about the tip, which had NOT been remarked on by my daughter. This old bag felt the need to point out that she NEVER tipped more than 10% (you know the sillyass reason why) and would be reducing the tip to 7% because one of the other old bags "had" to request a refill on a glass that was 3/4 full.
Talk to folks with experience in food service; they'll all have some horror stories about the church crowd. Baptists seem to be the worst."

Hmmm.....I'm willing to bet that not only the "church crowd" dines out on Sundays.
Did your daughter know the "preacher's wife" personally; or better asked, how did she know she was a "preacher's wife"? Butt-holes come from all walks of life, even in the "Christian" crowd, and I, as a Baptist, have never heard any church member harp on that "10% b...s...." you speak of when it comes to tipping; however, having once been in the service business myself, I can tell some stories too.....and the business I was in gave me the privilege of knowing their names, and sometimes their occupations, before ever having meeting them in person. I've met jerks in the form of "Christians", preachers (or ministers), atheists, immigrants, local and national government employees, etc.....and they all dine out on Sundays.

That being said, this happened to appear in Yahoo! today...thought you might be interested since your poor young'uns seem to have gotten stiffed so much by the "church crowd".
