Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Semi-serious question: Who was/is more liberal, Nixon or Obama?
Looks like the single payer experiment is really working well in Vermont

"As Vermont Watchdog reported, an independent report by the Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm Avalere Health concluded that the costs of Green Mountain Care would require Vermont to raise tax revenue roughly equal to the state's tax collections from all sources today".

So says Watchdog.org. A right-wing "news organization" with a reputation for Inaccuracy & 'Manufactured News'. It's basically WingNutDaily WorldNetDaily for state-level spin.

It's published by the Franklin Center for Government & Public Integrity. To give you an idea of what they consider "Integrity", they teamed up with the Heritage Foundation to establish the Breitbart Awards. The award honors the life and work of the late Andrew Breitbart.

In other words this is an organization that does for b*llsh*t what Stonehenge does for rocks.

As the article notes at the bottom, Condon was against that "single payer experiment" from the start. There's no actual sign that "it's not working well." It's just his prediction.

Yep, Obama was just a pol. I understand that people, especially young
people, get all excited about a presidential candidate, and that presidential
candidates make a lot of big promises that they cannot keep. That's all part
of the game. No one who runs for president issues a platform of modest
goals, it's all about changing the world. Whatever. I'll still take Obama over
the two GOPers he ran against any day. Bush started two wars, while Obama
dropped some bombs on Libya. The ole Gitmo myth is still alive all around
the political spectrum. Obama refused to close Gitmo? Nope, Congress refused
to provide funds and then basically made it illegal to close it.

It's true that it is the system that stays in place no matter who is president.
I just think it was somewhat naive to think Obama could do all he promised.
Sure he likely could have been more aggressive in some things, but he has to
operate under political realities and the reality is that a president can't do every-
thing he wants. Presidents of either party rarely live up to the expectations of
their liberal or conservative followers.

Yeah, it would be good to be surprised for a change, but that doesn't happen
too often. I think he has figured out that the Republicans don't want to
cooperate very much, so now why bother. Might be a whole lot of vetoing going
on next year.

randi braggs about lying - he be so presidential

Rand Paul was talking with University of Louisville medical students when one of them tossed him a softball. "The majority of med students here today have a comprehensive exam tomorrow. I'm just wondering if you have any last-minute advice."
"Actually, I do," said the ophthalmologist-turned-senator, who stays sharp (and keeps his license) by doing pro bono eye surgeries during congressional breaks. "I never, ever cheated. I don't condone cheating. But I would sometimes spread misinformation. This is a great tactic. Misinformation can be very important."

He went on to describe studying for a pathology test with friends in the library. "We spread the rumor that we knew what was on the test and it was definitely going to be all about the liver," he said. "We tried to trick all of our competing students into over-studying for the liver" and not studying much else.

"So, that's my advice," he concluded. "Misinformation works."

I guess Paul doesn't consider plagiarism a from of cheating, which
is perfectly understandable considering his copycat ways.

Now...from the other side of the fence:

REP. JOHN YOUNG (D-Tex.):
Colleen Gardner, a former staff secretary to Young, told the New York Times that Young increased her salary after she gave in to his sexual advances.

REP. ALLAN HOWE (D-Utah):
Howe was arrested in Salt Lake City on charges of soliciting two policewomen posing as prostitutes. Howe insisted he was set up and refused to resign. But the Democratic Party distanced itself from his candidacy and he was trounced by his Republican opponent in the November election.

REP. FRED RICHMOND (D-N.Y.):
Richmond was arrested in Washington for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old boy. Richmond apologized for his actions, conceding he "made bad judgments involving my private life."

REP. JOHN HINSON (D-Miss.):
During his first reelection bid, Hinson stunned everyone by announcing that in 1976 he had been accused of committing an obscene act at a gay haunt in Virginia. Hinson, married and a strong conservative, added that in 1977 he had survived a fire in a gay D.C. movie theater. He was making the disclosure, he said, because he needed to clear his conscience. But he denied he was a homosexual and refused GOP demands that he resign. Three months later, he was arrested on charges of attempted oral sodomy in the restroom of a House office building. He resigned his seat on April 13, 1981.

REP. ROBERT BAUMAN (D-Md.):
Bauman, a leading "pro-family" conservative, pleaded innocent to a charge that he committed oral sodomy on a teenage boy in Washington. Married and the father of four, Bauman conceded that he had been an alcoholic but had been seeking treatment.

REP. DAN CRANE (R-Ill.) and REP. GERRY STUDDS (D-Mass.):
The House ethics committee on July 14, 1983, announced that Crane and Studds had sexual relationships with teenage congressional pages -- Crane with a 17-year-old female in 1980, Studds with a 17-year-old male in 1973. Both admitted the charges that same day, and Studds acknowledged he was gay. The committee voted to reprimand the two, but a back-bench Georgia Republican named Newt Gingrich argued that they should be expelled. The full House voted on July 20 instead to censure the two, the first time that ever happened for sexual misconduct. Crane, married and the father of six, was tearful in his apology to the House, while Studds refused to apologize

SEN. BROCK ADAMS (D-Wash.):
Seattle newspapers reported that Kari Tupper, the daughter of Adams's longtime friends, filed a complaint against the Washington Democrat in July of 1987, charging sexual assault. She claimed she went to Adams's house in March 1987 to get him to end a pattern of harassment, but that he drugged her and assaulted her. Adams denied any sexual assault, saying they only talked about her employment opportunities. Adams continued raising campaign funds and declared for a second term in February of 1992. But two weeks later the Seattle Times reported that eight other women were accusing Adams of sexual molestation over the past 20 years, describing a history of drugging and subsequent rape

REP. JIM BATES (D-Calif.):
Roll Call quoted former Bates aides in October 1988 saying that the San Diego Democrat made sexual advances toward female staffers. Bates called it a GOP-inspired smear campaign, but also apologized for anything he did that might have seemed inappropriate.

REP. GUS SAVAGE (D-Ill.):
Savage had fondled a Peace Corps volunteer while on an official visit to Zaire. Savage called the story a lie and blamed it on his political enemies and a racist media. (Savage is black.) In January 1990, the House ethics committee decided that the events did occur, but decided against any disciplinary action because Savage wrote a letter to the woman saying he "never intended to offend" her.

REP. BARNEY FRANK (D-Mass.):
In response to a story in the Washington Times, Frank confirmed that he hired Steve Gobie, a male prostitute, in 1985 to live with and work for him in his D.C. apartment. But Frank, who is gay, said he fired Gobie in 1987 when he learned he was using the apartment to run a prostitution service. The Boston Globe, among others, called on Frank to resign, but he refused. On July 19, 1990, the ethics committee recommended Frank be reprimanded because he "reflected discredit upon the House" by using his congressional office to fix 33 of Gobie's parking tickets.

SEN. DANIEL INOUYE (D-Hawaii):
In October 1992, Republican Senate nominee Rick Reed began running a campaign commercial that included a surreptitiously taped interview with Lenore Kwock, Inouye's hairdresser. Kwock said Inouye had sexually forced himself on her in 1975 and continued a pattern of sexual harassment, even as Kwock continued to cut his hair over the years. Inouye, seeking a sixth term, denied the charges. And Kwock said that by running the commercial, Reed had caused her more pain than Inouye had. Reed was forced to pull the ad, and while many voters took out their anger on the Republican, Inouye was held to 57 percent of the vote - the lowest total of his career. A week later, a female Democratic state legislator announced that she had heard from nine other women who claimed Inouye had sexually harassed them over the past decade

REP MEL REYNOLDS (D-Ill.):
Freshman Reynolds was indicted on Aug. 19, 1994, on charges of having sex with a 16-year-old campaign worker and then pressuring her to lie about it. Reynolds, who is black, denied the charges and said the investigation was racially motivated. Reynolds was convicted on Aug. 22, 1995 of 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography, was sentenced to five years in prison, and resigned his seat on October 1.
Reynold's rap sheet includes the following:
•Obstruction of Justice convicted Aug-1995
•Statutory Rape convicted Aug-1995
•Child Pornography convicted Aug-1995
•Fraud (bank fraud) convicted 1997
•Wire Fraud convicted 1997
•Perjury convicted 1997

Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) pleaded guilty on February 20, 2013 to one count of wire and mail fraud in connection with his misuse of $750,000 of campaign funds. In August 2013 Jackson was sentenced to two and half years imprisonment.

Thomas Porteous (D) The Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana was impeached, convicted and removed from office on December 8, 2010 on charges of bribery and lying to Congress.

William J. Jefferson (D-LA) in August 2005 the FBI seized $90,000 in cash from Jefferson's home freezer. He was re-elected anyway, but lost in 2008. He was convicted of 11 counts of bribery and sentenced to 13 years in prison on November 13, 2009. Jefferson's Chief of Staff Brett Pfeffer, was sentenced to 84 months for bribery.

Jim Traficant (D-OH) found guilty on 10 felony counts of financial corruption was sentenced to 8 years in prison and expelled from the US House of Representatives.

Frank Ballance (D-NC) admitted to federal charges of money laundering and mail fraud in October 2005 and was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

Wade Sanders (D), Deputy Assistant United States Secretary of the Navy, for Reserve Affairs, was sentenced to 37 months in prison on one charge of possession of child pornography.

Walter R. Tucker III (D-CA) was sentenced to 27 months in prison in 1996 for extortion and tax evasion.

Austin Murphy (D-PA) convicted of one count of voter fraud for filling out absentee ballots for members of a nursing home.

Nicholas Mavroules (D-Massachusetts) convicted of extortion, accepting illegal gifts and failing to report them on congressional disclosure and income tax forms. Mavroules pleaded guilty to fifteen counts in April 1993 and was sentenced to a fifteen-month prison term.

Albert Bustamante (D-Texas) convicted of accepting bribes.

Christopher Dumler, a 27 year old elected Democrat who represents Scottsville in the Albermarle County Virginia Board of Supervisors was charged with criminal sexual assault on a fellow female law student. Dumler was accused of committing an act of forcible anal sodomy “by threat or intimidation upon the victim.”

Alabama State Representative Terry Spicer (D) pled guilty to accepting more than $3000 per month in bribes.

Let's not forget:
John Wayne Gacy, rapist, murderer, Democratic fund raiser
Michael Skakel, Kennedy, murderer
William Kennedy Smith, Kennedy, rapist
Brian Doyle, Democratic activist, child molester
Neil Goldschmidt, Oregon governor, confessed child molester

There's more....but the point is, sleazebags can be found on both sides of the political fence.

Clever reparte, Mr.B., but the point isn't whether or not Dems or the Darksiders actually have "family values." It is whether or not they use "family values" as a qualification and bragging point for their campaign. Republicans have generally co-opted the term to meet their own definition and it has been somewhat of a litmus test for them. But sure, both (or all) parties have sleazebags and scandals. It's just more entertaining when a guy running on an anti-gay or anti-drug platform gets caught with another guy and a cache of coke than when somebody else gets caught for whom those issues weren't a part of the campaign and persona.

I remember someone making the same claim during the 2008 election, based on Bill Clinton. Meanwhile of all the candidates in the 2008 primaries, none of the Democrats had a record of cheating or divorce, and all of the Republicans did. Some of them (Gingrich, McCain, Giuliani) made Clinton look like a family man by comparison.

Needless to say for 2012 the Republicans put a damper on family values claims except to declare who couldn't be one (homophobia), and who was REQUIRED to have one (being impregnated by a rapist being a "gift from god.")

On the other hand, I hear that Santorum’s concession speech is being used as an “It Gets Better” video.

Republican family values:

A Republican and his wife were having a fine dining experience at their exclusive country club when this stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big kiss, says she'll see him later and walks away.

His wife glares at him and says, "Who was that?!"

"Oh," replies the husband, "she's my mistress."

"Well that's the last straw," says the wife. "I've had enough, I want a divorce. I am going to hire the most aggressive, meanest divorce lawyer I can find and make your life miserable."

"I can understand that," replies her husband, "but remember, if we get a divorce it will mean no more wintering in Key West, or the Caribbean, no more summers in Tuscany, no more Cadillac STS in the garage, and no more country club, and we'll have to sell the 26-room house and move to two smaller homes, but the decision is yours."

Just then, a mutual friend enters the restaurant with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

"Who's that with Jim?" asks the wife.

"That's his mistress," says her husband.

The wife replies, "Ours is prettier."

William Kennedy Smith is a Smith, not a Kennedy, and he was acquitted of the
charge of rape.

Michael Skakel is a Skakel, not a Kennedy, and he has been granted a new trial,
pending an appeal by the prosecution. He was tried almost thirty years after the
fact and there has never been any forensic evidence linking him to the murder.

Neil Goldschmidt was not a child molester. He had consensual sex with a 13 or 14
year old girl.

I condemn his actions too, but I don't think I would consider what he
did, as bad as it was, to be child molestation. Child molestation sounds
like he was messing around with a five year old. I would call it child
exploitation.
