Perhaps the Redskins should be named the Fuckbeaters or Hammerdicks; surely neither of those could be construed as a "slur" to any group or even an individual. Well, on second thought, some individuals may be offended to some degree; hard to say. Hell, I'd bet on the Hammerdicks....

The team on the other hand makes it clear that "Redskins" refers to race. It would be like a team calling itself the "Whiteys" with an image of, say, a colonial outfit. VERY few would doubt that it was derogatory. And you could count many who dismiss "Redskins" to freak out about it.

Washington Redskins Franchise History:

"The team originated as the Boston Braves, based in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1932. At the time the team played in Braves Field, home of the Boston Braves baseball team. The following year the club moved to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, whereupon owners changed the team's name to the Boston Redskins. The Redskins relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937."

So...why has the Redskin name prevailed all these years, and now it's suddenly a racial slur? The age of political correctness is gone wild?

Why isn't "Braves" considered a racial slur? When I look at the logo of the WRS, I see a proud Native American; the other older logo a happy Native American.
So.....maybe the WRS should change their name to "The Native Americans"?

Not really, at least from the standpoint of the recent de-trademarking decision. It was based on the standards of 1967 when the trademark was awarded.
